Memphis Tigers 2026 Season Preview

American Athletic · Charles Huff, year 1 · 8-5 last season · No. 74 in our FBS ratings

Almost Total Overhaul

Charles Huff inherits a roster that returns just 4% of its production, meaning the 8-5 season on the card belongs to players who are almost entirely gone, and Memphis in 2026 is really a talent-59 roster betting that Marcus Stokes and a nearly all-new cast can rebuild the identity from scratch rather than build on it.

Stokes Behind an Unfamiliar Cast

Can Marcus Stokes throw to receivers and behind a line he has never played with and still function as a full-season starter? With offensive returning production at just 3.7%, almost nobody who caught passes or blocked for Brendon Lewis last season is still around, so Stokes will be building chemistry from scratch under a first-year staff. Expect early growing pains rather than instant continuity, since Charles Huff is installing his system with essentially a new unit around his new quarterback.

Road Tests Define Memphis

Charles Huff's first year in charge will be decided on three road trips: at Boise State (30% win), at Tulane (34%) and at UNLV (35%) are the games that separate a solid AAC finish from a rebuilding one. Everything else on the slate skews favorable, with UAB (84%), Arkansas State (73%) and Charlotte (74%) all projected wins at 73% or better, which is how a team with a schedule ranked 82nd in difficulty still lands at a projected 7-5. If Memphis can steal even one of those three low-probability road games, the bowl math gets easy; go 0-for-3 and this program is fighting for its life in a home date with South Florida and Navy instead.
