SEC 2026 Season Preview

Texas Sets the Bar

Texas sits alone at the top nationally, projected to 10-2 and the clear favorite to reach the title game. Georgia, projected 10-2 as well, is the only team close enough to be a legitimate co-favorite, setting up a projected Texas-Georgia championship rematch that looks like the real ceiling for the league. Behind those two, Alabama at 9-3 is the closest thing to a spoiler, while LSU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma bunch up at 8-4 with too much separation from the top two to call this race truly wide open. This is a two-team race at the top with a crowded, secondary tier fighting for the leftover slot.

LSU Tops the List

LSU places four players on the SEC preseason all-conference team, more than any other program, anchored by receiver Jackson Harris, tight end Trey'Dez Green, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and safety Ty Benefield, a group that touches both lines of scrimmage and the back end. Ole Mississippi's Trinidad Chambliss takes the quarterback spot with backfield mates Joshua Dye and Kewan Lacy also making the offensive cut, giving that program the rare distinction of owning the entire backfield on the first team. Texas and Texas A&M each stack multiple linebackers and defensive backs, from Colin Simmons and Rasheem Biles to Ray Coney and Tawfiq Byard, while Auburn, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Georgia each land exactly one representative on either side of the ball. That spread, with no other school approaching LSU's total but talent scattered across eight different programs, points to a conference with one clear headliner and real depth behind it.

Ownership Is Scattered

No program cleans up the SEC's position-room race outright, and that spread is the story. Ole Miss is the closest thing to a monopoly, topping both the quarterback room behind Trinidad Chambliss and the running back room behind Joshua Dye, two of the conference's seven groups. Everyone else gets exactly one crown apiece: LSU's receiver corps runs through Jackson Harris, Oklahoma's tight end room centers on Rocky Beers, and Texas splits the front seven with Colin Simmons up front and Rasheem Biles at linebacker, while Tennessee's secondary is anchored by DJ Burks. With six different schools claiming the seven titles, the league's returning talent is genuinely dispersed rather than stacked in one or two rosters.
