Bill Belichick's second year has to answer why a roster ranked 31st nationally in talent produced the 120th-ranked scoring offense in 2025, and with just 36% of production returning the turnaround rests on new pieces gelling fast rather than a talent shortage.
With only 38.9% of defensive production back, can this unit avoid another collapse while Billy Edwards Jr. and a nearly rebuilt offense find their footing? The likelier outcome is growing pains on both sides at once, since so little experience returns to steady a defense that has to cover for an offense still learning its new quarterback. That combination points to another slow start in 2026 rather than a quick turnaround.
The neutral-site opener against TCU is basically a coin flip, but the season's identity gets set in a brutal three-game stretch: at Clemson, home against a Notre Dame team Belichick's Tar Heels are projected to beat just 12% of the time, and a Miami visit where the number sits at 18%. Winnable spots exist elsewhere, an NC State home game at 59%, a trip to UConn at 80%, but with a projected 6-6 mark and just over a coin flip's odds at a bowl bid, this team has almost no margin against the three ranked-caliber opponents that will decide whether year two under Belichick reads as progress or another middling ACC finish.

The debut season landed at 4-8 and 2-6 in the ACC, a rough first look at Bill Belichick's college transition that did not match the offseason noise around his hire. The underlying power rating, No. 42 nationally, tells a different story than the conference ledger, suggesting the roster is closer to competitive than the record shows. Year two is the number that matters most here: a first full cycle to install his system and align the roster with how he wants to build it.
North Carolina's offense finished 131st in total yards and 120th in scoring, the kind of production collapse that swallowed Bill Belichick's first year in Chapel Hill. The fix for 2026 is Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr., who takes over an offense that ranked 121st in explosiveness and converted third downs at just a 36.9% clip. The defense actually held up its end, allowing just 4.95 yards per play (25th nationally), so the whole season now rides on whether Edwards can turn a unit that stalled inside scoring range into one that finishes drives.
Gio Lopez and Max Johnson are both gone, and North Carolina replaces its entire quarterback room with Billy Edwards Jr., the Wisconsin transfer who steps in as the established starter behind an offense that managed just 19.3 points and 4.95 yards per play a year ago. None of the returning arms (Au'Tori Newkirk, DJ Mazzone, Andres Miyares Jr.) carry any real production, so the job of fixing a passing attack that ranked 111th nationally falls squarely on Edwards from day one. Western Carolina transfer Taron Dickens, who threw for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns at the FCS level, gives Bill Belichick a legitimate insurance policy if Edwards needs a breather, but this offense's ceiling in year two is tied directly to how quickly the new starter cleans up an attack that finished 115th in success rate.
North Carolina loses Davion Gause, its most productive back at 258 yards and 3 scores, and doesn't replace him with a difference-maker so much as hand more carries to the guys who already couldn't move the ball. Demon June (464 yards) and Benjamin Hall (274 yards) both return, but neither cracked 5 yards a pop on a rushing attack that finished 123rd nationally, and LSU transfer Kaleb Jackson arrives as a pass-catching option (5 catches, 33 yards) rather than an between-the-tackles fix. Until this line and this backfield prove otherwise, 105 yards a game on the ground looks like the floor again in year two under Bill Belichick.
Jordan Shipp (60 catches, 671 yards, 6 TD) is the lone proven piece in a room that got overhauled after an offense that ranked 131st in total yards simply couldn't move the ball. Bill Belichick went to the portal for Mason Humphrey (35-651-4 at Lehigh) and Trech Kekahuna (26-211 at Wisconsin) to pair with Shipp, while four-star Keeyun Chapman and Carnell Warren headline a recruiting push to add juice to an offense that ranked 121st in explosiveness. Kobe Paysour's 438 yards walk out the door, but with Shipp as the only established target from a year ago, Humphrey's production has to translate against ACC competition for this passing game to look any different in 2026.
North Carolina didn't just lose production at tight end, it lost the whole room, with Jake Johnson and Jordan Owens both gone off an offense that already ranked 131st in total yards. Bill Belichick answered by importing five new bodies at once: Jelani Thurman from Ohio State and Jaxxon Warren from Colorado State both arrive with modest receiving numbers (7 catches apiece), while Jordan Washington's 340 rushing yards from Texas hints at a more run-heavy, multi-purpose role than the position saw last year. With Shamar Easter and Deems May offering almost nothing on paper, this is Thurman and Warren's group to run, and how quickly those two outside transfers mesh will decide whether the passing game climbs out of the bottom third nationally or stays stuck there.
A line that produced 105 rushing yards per game and let the offense stall at 4.95 yards per play cannot simply return the same names and expect different results, and North Carolina is not doing that anyway. Ten linemen are out the door against nine back, so senior Christo Kelly and juniors Aidan Banfield and Jordan Hall carry whatever continuity exists, while four-star tackle J.B. Shabazz and interior additions Will Conroy, Da'Ron Parks, Zion Smith and Anthony Hall arrive to compete immediately up front. Bill Belichick is betting the fix comes from that influx rather than internal continuity, and with 22 sacks allowed and a 38.2% success rate to erase, the newcomers need to win jobs, not just push depth.
Melkart Abou Jaoude's 10.5 sacks and 12 TFL are the reason this front doesn't have to rebuild from scratch, even after CJ Mims, D'Antre Robinson and Smith Vilbert all cleared out. Isaiah Johnson and Leroy Jackson give Bill Belichick a base of tackle production to build around, while the four-star high school hauls of Vodney Cleveland, Jimmy-Phrisco Alo-Suliafu and Trashawn Ruffin, plus Penn State transfer Jaylen Harvey, are asked to add juice to a group that finished 97th in tackles for loss and 99th in run-stuff rate. The talent infusion matters most on early downs, where North Carolina already ranked 33rd in rush yards allowed a year ago and needs the newcomers to turn stops into negative plays rather than just gang tackles.
North Carolina loses the heart of its front seven with Khmori House (73 tackles), Tyler Thompson (7 sacks) and Mikai Gbayor all gone, leaving a room where Jonathan Agumadu (10 tackles) and Timir Hickman-Collins (9 tackles) are the only proven holdovers. Bill Belichick's staff answered that hole through the portal and recruiting trail rather than internal promotion, landing Richmond transfer Peyton Seelmann (9 tackles) alongside four-star freshmen Calvin Thomas and DQ Forkpa. With that much unproven talent replacing 73 tackles worth of production, a defense that already ranked 97th in tackles for loss and 99th in run-stuff rate is betting on upside over experience up front.
Kaleb Cost (45 tackles, 2 TFL) and Jaiden Patterson (33 tackles, 2 TFL) anchor a secondary that has to replace eight defensive backs, including leading tacklers Will Hardy (51) and Gavin Gibson (37). Bill Belichick patched the room with Michigan State transfer Ade Willie, who posted 16 tackles and 2 TFL last season, while the high school class brings four-star signees Kenton Dopson III and Jakob Weatherspoon into the mix as true freshmen. That group inherits a defense that finished 33rd in rushing yards allowed per game but just 97th in tackles for loss, and Cost's presence gives the back end a proven tackler to build around while the newcomers get up to speed.
Rece Verhoff's 19 of 23 field goals and 77 points walk out the door, and so does Tom Maginness after averaging 42.7 yards on 56 punts, leaving Bill Belichick's second year with nobody on hand who has kicked a college snap. North Carolina answered by importing three place-kickers at once, LSU transfer Aeron Burrell alongside true freshmen David Green and Adam McCann-Gibbs, betting depth can cover for total inexperience. Jacob Horvath returns to handle punts and Gannon Burt and Roman Wazni are back to snap, so the operation's stability rests on those holdovers while the kicking competition sorts itself out from scratch.
Year two brings a near-total roster teardown, 31 players out the door against 20 arrivals, and the most telling swap sits at quarterback, where Gio Lopez and Max Johnson are both gone and Billy Edwards Jr. arrives from Wisconsin to run the offense. The bigger stat-line names in the portal class, Taron Dickens and his 38 touchdown passes at Western Carolina, or Miles O'Neill from Texas A&M, are insurance, not the answer, with Edwards installed as the guy. Defensively the losses of Khmori House and Andrew Simpson strip out the two most productive linebackers from a 4-8 team, and a No. 19 recruiting class won't replace that production on day one, it buys time for Belichick's second roster to catch up to his vision.
Billy Edwards Jr. arrives from Wisconsin with no stat line to lean on, yet he's the only man taking snaps as QB1 in place of Gio Lopez's 1747 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jordan Shipp comes back with 60 catches and 671 yards to give him a proven target, and how quickly Edwards builds chemistry with Shipp determines whether this offense stabilizes or stalls out again in Belichick's second year.
Bill Belichick's first season under Bill Belichick produced no edge either way against the number, a 5-6-1 line that mirrors the 4-8 record on the field. The one real signal is what happened after a loss, when the Tar Heels covered at a 67% clip (4-2-1), suggesting a team that kept responding to bad weeks even as the overall record stayed rough. That rebound tendency, more than the flat 43% conference cover rate, is the trend worth tracking as Belichick enters year two.
