Pete Golding is running it back with a top-14 power rating and roster talent ranked 21st nationally, so this program has graduated from proving it belongs to proving it can win the games that separate contenders from pretenders.
Can Pete Golding's defense hold up with only 40.6% of its production coming back? The most likely outcome is a rockier start on that side of the ball, since replacing that much experience at once rarely happens without early growing pains, even for a defensive-minded coach who built his name coaching that unit. The offense, anchored by Chambliss, should be equipped to carry the team while the defense finds its footing.
Coming off a 13-2 season under Pete Golding, Ole Miss lands the nation's 5th-toughest schedule and a projected drop to 7-5, a gap that says more about who's on the slate than who's on the roster. The season turns on three real coin-flips: a trip to Texas at 20 percent, hosting Georgia at 35 percent, and a road date at Oklahoma at 40 percent, with a neutral-site opener against Louisville also up for grabs at 66 percent. Home dates with LSU and Auburn sit near a toss-up too, so this Rebels group can win big again, but the margin for error against the SEC's upper tier is thin.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Pete Golding's first year produced a 13-2 run and a playoff win over Georgia, but the margins behind that record are shakier than the banner suggests. Ole Miss went 5-1 in one-score games and squeezed scores out of just 13.3 yards per point on offense against a league median of 14.1, both signs of a team that finished drives better than it will again. The conference-play numbers back it up too, an 87.5% win rate that outran what a 141.9 yards-per-game margin would predict, so year two arrives with tougher sledding even as Golding returns 51% of his production to work with.
The story here is 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns walking back into the huddle. Trinidad Chambliss returns to a passing attack that ranked 3rd nationally a year ago, and with 490 total yards per game as the backbone, Ole Miss doesn't need to reinvent anything, just run it back with better third-down execution than last year's 43.1% clip. The rushing game (177 yards per game, 45th) is the piece that could turn a very good offense into an unstoppable one if it ever catches up to what Chambliss is doing through the air.
Trinidad Chambliss threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions a season ago, and Ole Miss brings back the exact engine that drove the No. 2 total offense and No. 3 passing attack in the country. The bigger story is who Pete Golding added behind him: Deuce Knight arrives from Auburn as a legitimate long-term answer, giving the Rebels a rare luxury of stability at the position without sacrificing future upside. With Austin Simmons gone and Chambliss entrenched as QB1, this offense should keep humming as one of the nation's most explosive rather than search for its identity.
Kewan Lacy's 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns give Ole Miss the rare luxury of building around a proven workhorse rather than replacing one, even as the room around him turns over almost entirely. Logan Diggs and Damien Taylor are gone, but the staff added insurance rather than a true competitor for the lead job: Joshua Dye arrives with 1,660 yards from Southern Utah and Makhi Frazier brings 520 yards from Michigan State, both capable of soaking up early-down work if Lacy needs a breather. With that much juice returning behind an offense that already moved the ball at a top-two national clip, the ceiling here is less about finding a back and more about whether the line can push a 177-yard rushing attack closer to matching its passing numbers.
Deuce Alexander (44-684-2) and Johntay Cook II (47-559-2) return as the proven pieces, but replacing Cayden Lee's 44 catches for 635 yards falls to a loaded transfer haul rather than an internal name. Darrell Gill Jr. arrives from Syracuse having caught 32 passes for 506 yards and 5 touchdowns, and Horatio Fields brings 12 catches and a touchdown over from Auburn, giving Ole Miss outside speed to plug into an offense that ranked 3rd nationally in passing yards per game. With that much proven production walking in the door, this group should hit the ground faster than a typical reload, even if the passing attack's explosiveness (42nd) still needs the new arrivals to create more chunk plays than Lee did.
Dae'Quan Wright's 39 catches walk out the door, and nobody left in the room has ever produced like that. Caleb Odom, who caught 19 balls for 197 yards last fall, becomes the clear No. 1 by default rather than performance, while Michigan transfer Brady Prieskorn arrives with zero catches on his ledger to fight for early snaps. Luke Hasz flashed with a touchdown on just three grabs, but this passing attack that ranked 3rd nationally in yards per game leaned hard on Wright's targets, and replacing that volume with an unproven group is the real question for Pete Golding's offense in 2026.
A line that protected a 313-yard passing attack and allowed just 19 sacks now loses nine bodies, forcing Pete Golding to reassemble the group around whichever of Connor Howes, Cooper Johnson and Joe Koury actually held the jobs a year ago. The fixes came via the portal and high school ranks alike: LSU transfer Carius Curne and four-star tackle Emanuel Tucker arrive to compete for tackle spots immediately, while Jalan Chapman and Kane Mankins add interior depth. The 177 rushing yards per game (45th nationally) was already the offense's soft spot, and with this much turnover up front, that number is more likely to slip further than to jump before this group settles.
Ole Miss loses the pressure package that fueled last year's run, with Princewill Umanmielen (9 sacks, 13 TFL) and Zxavian Harris (58 tackles, 9 TFL, 3 sacks) both gone. Will Echoles (11.5 TFL, 5 sacks) and Kam Franklin (9 TFL, 5 sacks) anchor the interior and edge, but Pete Golding rebuilt the pass rush almost entirely through the portal, adding Blake Purchase from Oregon, Jonathan Maldonado from Nevada and Michai Boireau from Florida alongside blue-chip prep signee Landon Barnes. That's a lot of new bodies replacing proven production at once, and until Purchase or Maldonado turns their college tape into SEC sacks, the tackles-for-loss total (83, 24th nationally) is more likely to dip than hold.
Suntarine Perkins (81 tackles, 12.5 TFL) anchors this group, but the departure of TJ Dottery's 98 tackles forced Pete Golding into the portal rather than trusting an internal answer. Luke Ferrelli arrives from California with 91 tackles and 5 TFL of his own, and Keaton Thomas brings 99 tackles from Baylor, giving Ole Miss two proven every-down linebackers to slot in immediately alongside Perkins. With Raymond Collins and Jarcoby Hopson offering little production behind them, the portal pickups aren't competing for jobs so much as replacing the bulk of what left, and a defense that already ranked 24th in tackles for loss should keep that identity with fresh legs doing the chasing.
Ole Miss rebuilt its safety room almost entirely, and the fix is Edwin Joseph. The Florida State transfer's 37 tackles and 3.5 TFL should replace Wydett Williams Jr.'s departed production at the position, while Georgia transfer Joenel Aguero adds another proven piece alongside returning Nick Cull. At corner, Antonio Kite (33 tackles) and Jaylon Braxton (24 tackles) give Pete Golding a settled base, and Florida transfer Sharif Denson's 52 tackles suggest he pushes straight into the mix rather than waiting behind Jalyn Crawford and Cedrick Beavers. The unit's real swing factor is whether that overhauled back end can lift a run defense that ranked 68th in yards allowed on the ground, since the passing numbers (37th) already hold up.
Lucas Carneiro hitting 31 of 35 field goals with a 58-yard long gives Ole Miss the rare luxury of a proven weapon rather than a question mark, and Oscar Bird's 46-yard average behind him means Pete Golding does not have to think twice about flipping field position. Mike Baker and Jalen Ballard are both gone from the kicking room, but with Carneiro already banking 149 points last season, that churn barely registers. This is a unit built on continuity, not reconstruction, and it should be a quiet strength rather than a storyline in 2026.
Ole Miss gutted its receiving corps, losing Harrison Wallace III, De'Zhaun Stribling and Cayden Lee, who combined for well over 2,000 yards a season ago, and replaces them with Syracuse transfer Darrell Gill Jr. and his 32 catches for 506 yards. Trinidad Chambliss, who threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns, is the projected starter and the offense's anchor while that new group gets up to speed, a much steadier bet than the departed Austin Simmons ever was. Up front the linebacker room gets an infusion with Keaton Thomas and Luke Ferrelli in from Baylor and Cal to offset TJ Dottery's 98 tackles walking out the door, and with 28 transfers in against a No. 22 class, this roster is being remade through the portal more than the recruiting trail.
Trinidad Chambliss is a settled known quantity coming off 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns, so the swing piece is the backfield behind him.
