Dru DeShields returns as the settled answer at quarterback, but he's operating behind a defense that gave up 33.6 points per game and inside a program ranked 135th in power rating, so his job in 2026 is less about growth than about outscoring a unit that can't get stops.
Can Mark Carney's defense avoid a second collapse with just 38.6% of its production back? The unit returns so little of what took the field in 2025 that continuity is essentially starting over, and with DeShields still finding his footing on offense, Kent State can't afford the same bleeding that sank last year's group. Expect growing pains to define the first half of the season before any real answer emerges.
Kent State's nonconference slate is the story here, trips to Ohio State and South Carolina bookending the season alongside a road date at South Florida, three games the Golden Flashes are projected to lose nearly outright. That leaves the MAC schedule to carry any bowl push, and with the toughest tests all coming outside the conference, the winnable stretch against Ball State, Akron and a home date with Ohio in the middle of the year decides whether year two under Mark Carney looks like progress. A 4-8 projection with just a 10% bowl shot says this group is built to grind out those mid-tier MAC matchups rather than steal one from the power-conference gauntlet.

Kent State went 4-2 in one-score games and finished 5-7, but the numbers underneath that record point the other way for Mark Carney's second season. In conference play the yardage margin was actually lopsided at -132.8 yards per game, the kind of gap that typically produces a far worse winning rate than what this team posted, and a turnover margin of -3 over 12 games is another number unlikely to break their way again. The offense's 13.9 yards per point beat the league median of 14.1, which reads as an efficient finish that is hard to repeat, while the defense allowed scores far too cheaply at 12.8 yards per point against a 14.6 median, a real problem Carney has to fix rather than a fluke that flatters the record.
Kent State's offense was a study in contradiction last fall, ranking 12th nationally in explosiveness on successful plays yet 135th on third down and 126th in success rate, a unit that could hit a home run but couldn't string together an at-bat. That paradox now belongs to Dru DeShields, the returning quarterback who takes over an offense that finished 128th in total yardage despite flashing real big-play juice. Fixing the on-schedule problem, not finding more explosive plays, is what actually turns this offense around in 2026.
Dru DeShields takes over an offense that finished 135th in third-down rate and 128th in total yards a year ago, punting far more often than throwing in whatever action he saw in 2025. That is the strange part of this job: DeShields arrives as the presumptive starter with almost no passing résumé, while CJ Montes and Devin Kargman, the two quarterbacks who actually threw the ball last season, are both gone. Kent State did flash real big-play ability underneath the mess, ranking 12th nationally in explosiveness on successful plays, so Mark Carney is betting DeShields and 3-star Defiance College transfer Ethan Thanthanavong can turn occasional splash plays into a passing game that was 99th in yards per game, rather than starting over completely.
Gavin Garcia's 647 yards and Jordan Nubin's 253 walked out the door, leaving a rushing attack that managed just 98 yards per game (130th) with almost nobody proven behind it. Jahzae Kimbrough's modest 97 yards are the top returning mark, and the depth chart is filled out by Illinois State transfer Mason King and three-star signee Jackson Farley, none of whom have carried a real workload yet. Kent State's offense still found chunk plays at a national top-15 clip in 2025, so whoever separates from this crowded, unproven group inherits a role that can turn broken tackles into explosive gains if the line ever creates space.
Kent State loses Dashawn Martin's 33 catches and 507 yards, the only real production off last year's group, and replaces him with unproven pieces rather than a like-for-like transfer. Wayne Harris (35 catches, 383 yards) becomes the clear top target, with Ardell Banks and his 2 touchdowns on just 12 catches representing the closest thing to a downfield threat. Newcomers Zymir Reed, Brendyn Smith and Javier Willis arrive with no college stats, which matters given a passing attack that ranked 99th in yards per game and posted a 27.6% third-down rate a year ago.
Every meaningful tight end snap comes back for Kent State, led by Terik Mulder, who turned 19 grabs into 4 touchdowns a year ago and becomes the clear top target at the position with Christian Berry gone. Hunter Hopperton, Zy'aire Fletcher and Dakota Taylor all return with modest but real production, giving Mark Carney a deep, experienced room to lean on behind an offense that ranked 135th in third down rate and 126th in success rate. That continuity matters little if the ground game stays stuck at 130th nationally in rushing, but Mulder gives Kent State a functional safety valve the passing attack sorely needs.
A line that produced 98 rushing yards per game and a 27.6% third-down rate, both among the worst marks in the country, gets the bulk of its bodies back in 2026, with Dustyn Morell, Hudson Chasko and Jamarcus Hill the most senior returners up front. Mark Carney did not blow up the room, but he added Colin Prichard and Gavin Kanar at tackle and William Johnson III and Liam Dalton inside, four three-star signees who arrive with a chance to push for time immediately given how little separates this group by name recognition alone. The floor for improvement is low given last season's efficiency numbers, but continuity in bodies plus a wave of new blood at tackle gives Kent State more competition for jobs than it had a year ago.
Kent State loses Jamond Mathis, the one lineman who actually got after the quarterback with 6 sacks and 8 TFL, and nobody left on the roster comes close to that production. Thomas Aden (24 tackles, 2 sacks) and Darian Blachewicz (5 TFL) return as the steadiest pieces, but a defense that already ranked 129th in points allowed per game needs more than modest tackle numbers from Jaihien Roy and Mason Maddox. Three-star additions Kale Webb, Jacob Broach and Eckley Bridges arrive without a single stat to their name, so this group has to develop fast or the run defense that gave up 192 yards per game stays exposed.
Mason Woods took his 94 tackles and 11 TFL out the door, and Kent State replaced that production with volume rather than a single name, bringing in five transfer linebackers led by Rocco Nicholl and Nate Gregory. Sayed Abuhamdeh (39 tackles) is the lone proven returning piece in a room that otherwise ran thin, with Trey Rubinstein and unproven names like Tanner Mintz and Rafael Terrero Jr. filling out the rest. A defense that allowed 192 rushing yards a game in 2025 needs Nicholl and Gregory to hit the ground playing, not developing, or the run-stopping numbers do not move.
CJ Young's 89 tackles and 8 TFL walk out the door, and Jaire Rawlison's 52 tackles go with him, gutting the group that anchored a defense that gave up 428 yards a game (125th nationally). Joel Cordoba (66 tackles) and Derrick Jackson III (48 tackles) are the returning volume tacklers Kent State leans on, while DJ Barnes brings the most disruption back with 2 TFL. The three-star corners, Lennox Lemon and TeJuan Barbour, arrive with no game snaps yet, so Davion Pritchard, who already has a tackle logged at Pittsburgh, and safety Norey Johnson are the newcomers best positioned to crack the lineup early.
Kent State loses the entirety of its proven specialist production, with Will Hryszko's 6 of 8 field goals and Charlie Durkin's 48 punts at a 41.1 average both off the roster. Jake Stoeckel is the only punter with any game snaps on file, just 9 punts at 31.3 yards, while Sean Leonard, Tommy Newcomb and Nathan Tager all return at placekicker with zero recorded kicks between them. That leaves Mark Carney picking a full-time field goal kicker from a trio with no on-field data to lean on, a real unknown for a team that finished 5-7.
Kent State gutted its linebacker corps this offseason, losing Mason Woods (94 tackles, 11 TFL) and Nylan Brown, then answering with a wave of portal linebackers in Quan Rhodes-McKee, Rocco Nicholl, Nate Gregory and Hayden Dawahare, plus high school signee Daiveon Taylor. That is a lot of new faces replacing proven production, and none of the arrivals has posted numbers close to what Woods gave the defense. The backfield took the same hit, with Gavin Garcia and Cade Wolford both gone, leaving Cincinnati transfer Jakorion Caffey to battle for touches behind a passing offense that still runs through returning quarterback Dru DeShields.
Gavin Garcia's 647 yards walk out the door, and Kent State is turning to Cincinnati transfer Jakorion Caffey, a 3-star arrival who carried the ball for just 6 yards last season, to fill that void behind Dru DeShields. That is a steep leap of faith for a backfield with almost no proven production, and if Caffey cannot find a rhythm quickly, DeShields and Wayne Harris will be asked to carry a heavier share of an offense that already has little margin for error.
Kent State finished 5-7 straight up but covered at a 55% clip, and the number that jumps off the sheet is the 6-1 mark against the spread following a loss. That pattern paired with a 63% cover rate in conference play points to a program that outperformed its record whenever the line adjusted for it, especially at home where the Golden Flashes went 3-2 straight up and covered at 60%. Road trips were the drag, with Kent State losing five of seven true away games straight up, so a 2026 jump depends on Mark Carney's group solving that split rather than repeating last year's home-field profile.
