Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3Sun Belt · Dell McGee, year 3 · 1-11 last season · No. 127 in our FBS ratings
A defense that gave up 37.8 points a game, 134th nationally, sits on a roster ranked 77th in accumulated talent, meaning Dell McGee's third year is a test of coaching and scheme fixes rather than a talent deficit, with only 24% production returning to build on.
Can Cameran Brown carry an offense that returns barely a third of its production in 2026? With Ted Hurst gone and only 33.4% of offensive production back, Brown is stepping into a nearly bare cupboard of blockers and pass catchers, and the answer likely comes down to whether Dell McGee can find any complementary pieces before conference play starts. Given how thin the returning numbers are on that side of the ball, expect Brown's individual performance to outpace the team's overall offensive output again.
Georgia State's 2026 slate barely resembles a rebuild-friendly schedule, ranking 110th in difficulty, and the projected 4-8 mark reflects just how few true tossups Dell McGee's group gets. The trip to UCF (11% win) is essentially unwinnable on paper, and road tests at James Madison (16%) and Marshall (29%) sit alongside a Kennesaw State road game (29%) as the true measuring points for a program still hunting its first Sun Belt win streak. Even the home slate offers little cushion, with Old Dominion (30%) and Louisiana (39%) as coin-flip-or-worse games, meaning any bowl push runs through winning at least one of those road gauntlet games outright.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
A 1-11 season with an 0-8 slate in Sun Belt play is about as bare as a roster performance gets, and the No. 127 power rating backs up that the product on the field matched the record rather than underselling it. Dell McGee heads into year three having to find actual traction rather than incremental progress, since last season showed none of the growth a third-year staff usually points to. There is no cushion of style points or close losses to lean on here, the tape and the record tell the same story.
Cameran Brown threw 13 touchdowns against a single interception in 2025 and returns as the clear answer at quarterback, giving Georgia State a passing attack that finished 38th nationally even while the team went 1-11. The problem was never his side of the ball. A defense that allowed 37.8 points per game and posted a 12.7% havoc rate has to find stops in 2026, because a minus-11 turnover margin buried Brown's efficiency last season and will do it again if the front seven cannot generate more than 18 sacks.
Cameran Brown's 13 touchdowns against a single interception in 2025 stood out on a 1-11 team that scored just 19.8 points per game, and Georgia State didn't add competition so much as insurance behind him, with Merrimack transfer Ayden Pereira arriving after a 1846-yard, 9-touchdown, 7-interception season. TJ Finley and Christian Veilleux are both gone, taking their combined interception totals with them, which leaves Brown as the unquestioned answer at the position. The passing game already ranked 38th nationally in yards per game a year ago, so the burden shifts to the run game and third-down offense (38.6%) to keep Brown from having to force the issue.
Rashad Amos (267 yards, 2 TD) and Djay Braswell are both gone, and Georgia State answered by importing five backs rather than leaning on any proven returner. Keith Adams Jr. arrives from Clemson with 71 rushing yards and a touchdown already on his resume, and four-star Qwantavius Wiggins gives Dell McGee his highest-rated addition at the position, but neither has carried a Sun Belt load. Dennis Murray Jr. returns as the only back with real production, 13 catches for 99 yards and a score, which makes him the closest thing to a known commodity for a ground game that finished 107th in rushing yards per game.
Georgia State loses the bulk of its passing game with Ted Hurst (71 catches, 1004 yards, 6 TD) and Javon Robinson (58 catches, 599 yards, 4 TD) both gone, and no returning wideout comes close to replacing that production, with DJ Riles' 16 catches for 176 yards the top holdover mark. West Georgia transfer Owen Dupree, who caught 26 passes for 310 yards and 4 TDs last season, arrives as the clear answer at the top of the room, while Chase Allen-Jackman, Rodshaun Dorsey, Zach Stair and Isaiah Stone bring no track record to a unit that has to replace nearly all its proven targets. That overhaul lands on an offense that already ranked 119th in scoring, so Dupree's transition to Sun Belt competition will largely determine whether the passing attack can hold onto its 38th-ranked yardage output.
Grant Hollier is the projected starter after his 21 catches, 288 yards and 4 touchdowns dwarfed every other tight end on this roster last season, and Georgia State needed that kind of production given a passing game that ranked 38th nationally while the rushing attack sat at 107th. The bigger swing is depth: Camden Overton-Howard (15 catches, 132 yards, 2 TD) and Lane Wadle (9 catches, 92 yards) are both gone, so Fordham transfer Matt Buron, who caught 4 passes for 77 yards last year, arrives to fill snaps behind Hollier rather than push him for the job. With Avion McBride, Wesley Campbell VI and Kyle Mullenix all unproven as receivers, this group leans almost entirely on Hollier staying healthy and efficient for an offense still searching for scoring punch at 119th in points per game.
Georgia State's line allowed only 19 sacks in 2025, but the ground game still stalled at 124 yards per game, 107th nationally, and that gap between protection and push is the whole story of this rebuild. Eleven linemen are out the door, so Dell McGee is turning to whoever emerges among juniors Deandre Duffus, Donovan Funsch and Kelton Smith Jr. plus senior Tyhler Williams, while transfers Jordan Brown (Arizona) and Connor Jones (Michigan) arrive at tackle to stabilize the edges. With that much turnover up front, the passing game's 254 yards per game is more likely to carry the offense early than any push to fix the run.
Georgia State's five leading tacklers up front are all gone, including Bishop Thomas (48 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Jabriel Rhodes-Nelson (41 tackles, 5 TFL), stripping a unit that already allowed 210 rushing yards per game (129th) of almost all its production. What returns is largely unproven beyond Richard Kramer's 13 tackles and Alex Mullings, with Tyrese Cathey, Gabriel Chigwere, Samuel Chukwurah and Jalen Jordan carrying no statistical track record. Oregon State transfer Kelze Howard and a four-man high school haul led by Freddie Wilson and Timothy Dailey have to grow up fast against a run-stuff rate of just 14.2 percent, or this defense repeats its 2025 problems at the line of scrimmage.
Georgia State's leading tacklers at linebacker are gone, with Josiah Robinson's 96 tackles and 8 TFL and Kedrick Walker's 57 tackles and 6.5 TFL both walking out the door from a unit that already ranked 129th in rushing yards allowed and 127th in run-stuff rate. Coby Owens and Kelan Butler return with modest 2025 snaps at 26 and 24 tackles, but the real bet is on the transfer additions, Jaydon Hood arriving from Michigan and Ryan Green from Wingate, to add the physicality this group lacked. Until one of those newcomers proves he can fill the gap Robinson and Walker left, Georgia State's run defense figures to look a lot like the one that finished 129th against the ground game in 2025.
A unit that allowed 241 passing yards per game and ranked 129th in rushing yards allowed gets almost entirely reconstructed rather than patched. Tyson McCrary (22 tackles) and Derrick Maxey III (17 tackles) are the only proven tacklers back, so Georgia State is leaning hard on outsiders: Ohio State transfer Keenan Nelson Jr. brings blue-chip pedigree at safety, while Deuce Lee (11 tackles at Monmouth) and cornerbacks Toby Bolton, Donovan Faria and Darius Johnson Jr. arrive to replace departed tacklers Chandler Jordan and Isaiah Dunson. With a 12.7% havoc rate a year ago, the difference in 2026 will be whether Nelson and Lee can turn takeaways into the disruption this group lacked.
Georgia State is starting over at placekicker after Liam Rickman (5 of 9, 28 points) and Braeden McAlister (2 of 7, 13 points) combined to miss more than they made in 2025. Samer Layous arrives from Marist having gone 8 of 10 with a 46-yard long, and that accuracy jump alone should stop games from slipping away on makeable field goals. Landon Vargas returns as the incumbent option, but Layous profiles as the more proven leg the Panthers have lacked.
Georgia State's 1-11 collapse wiped out both quarterbacks who threw into it, with TJ Finley and Christian Veilleux gone and Cameran Brown now the settled starter after throwing 13 touchdowns against a single interception in his snaps. That efficiency, paired with 39 outgoing transfers including leading receiver Ted Hurst's 1004 yards, means the passing game gets simpler and more turnover-averse even as the volume around Brown changes. The reload leans on modest imports rather than star power, Owen Dupree and Matt Buron replacing lost pass-catching production and Keith Adams Jr. and Jaylen Poe restocking a backfield that lost Jordon Simmons and Rashad Amos, a roster remake built on addition by subtraction rather than name recognition.
Cameran Brown threw for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns against a single interception behind a 1-11 team, proof the quarterback was never the problem. With Ted Hurst's 71 catches and 1,004 yards gone, the 2026 season turns on whether Grant Hollier and DJ Riles can turn their modest 2025 numbers into a real target share for Brown to work with. If that receiving corps grows up around him, Georgia State's offense looks nothing like a one-win team.
Georgia State did not just lose games in 2025, it lost the closed ones too, covering just 17% of its spreads overall while going 1-11 on the field. The market never found a soft spot: home favorite status brought an 0-1 cover mark, road underdog trips went 1-5, and losses kept compounding at a 20% cover rate the week after a defeat. Dell McGee's third year opens with Vegas still pricing this program as live-underdog-or-bust, and until the results shift, backing Georgia State against any number is a bet against the entire 2025 sample.
