Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3Mountain West · Jason Eck, year 2 · 9-4 last season · No. 81 in our FBS ratings
Jason Eck built nine wins out of a roster ranked 131st in the country, which means New Mexico's real 2026 story is whether coaching and scheme can keep masking a talent gap that the numbers say should not produce a Mountain West contender.
Who takes over the lead-back role with Damon Bankston gone, and can New Mexico keep the ground game from becoming Jack Layne's burden alone? With offensive returning production sitting at just 58.9%, the answer probably leans on Layne throwing more often rather than any proven ball-carrier stepping into that void, since no returning back is established in his place. That shift puts even more weight on Layne cutting down mistakes after last season's interception total, because the rushing attack New Mexico leaned on is no longer intact.
A schedule ranked 109th in difficulty gives Jason Eck a runway to build on last year's 9-4 mark, with a slate loaded with winnable trips to New Mexico State, San José State and Nevada plus home dates against Central Michigan and UTEP. The lone gut-check comes at Oklahoma, a 7% shot that exists mostly to cash a check, while the actual season turns on the road trip to Hawai'i and the home date with UNLV, both true coin flips. Split those two and the 90% bowl odds hold up as more validation than surprise.

Jason Eck's debut in Albuquerque produced a 9-4 finish and a 6-2 mark in Mountain West play, the kind of first-year showing that buys real credibility rather than scrutiny. New Mexico still sits at just #81 in the power ratings, a gap between the results and the underlying rating that makes year two the real test of whether last fall was foundation or ceiling. With conference success already banked and the program still early in his tenure, Eck gets to build from a position of trust instead of having to answer for anything.
Jack Layne is the projected starter at quarterback again in 2026, and that continuity matters for a New Mexico offense that finished 78th nationally in success rate despite winning nine games. His 2025 line, 2,486 yards, 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, shows the turnover issue that has to tighten given a team that finished -6 in turnover margin. The bigger question is protection, since an offense that allowed 34 sacks needs Layne kept upright to turn last year's efficient scoring (3.96 points per opportunity) into more explosive plays in 2026.
Jack Layne threw for 2486 yards last season but also tossed 10 interceptions against 13 touchdowns, and New Mexico brought back the same job for him rather than importing a fix. That tension defines 2026: Layne has the reps and the arm talent to push this offense past 205 passing yards per game, but the 34 sacks allowed a year ago is the real threat to any leap, since pressure is what turned his big-play chances into giveaways. Oregon transfer Luke Moga and true freshman Cade Mitchell sit behind him as insurance, not competition, which means Layne's decision-making, not a quarterback change, will decide whether this offense's 3.96 points per scoring opportunity climbs or Layne's turnovers cap it again.
Damon Bankston's 635 yards and D.J. McKinney's 464 walk out the door together, leaving Scottre Humphrey as the only proven back in the room off his 349-yard, 5-touchdown 2025. Deshaun Buchanan's work has come catching the ball out of the backfield, six grabs for 56 yards, while Ty Battle, Darrion Bowers and Rei Iwai carry no track record to lean on. Sierra Canyon's Jerod Terry arrives as a three-star with no game tape either, so Humphrey inherits the lead role on a run game that finished 76th in rushing yards per game, and this group's whole ceiling rests on him handling a bigger workload than he's ever had.
Keagan Johnson's 59 catches walk out the door, and no returning wideout comes close to replacing that workload, with Shawn Miller's 15 grabs the top mark among the holdovers. Troy Omeire, in from UNLV, is the answer, bringing 32 catches and 521 yards of proven Mountain West production to slot in as the clear No. 1. The receiving corps otherwise leans on unproven pieces like Deriece Brown and KJ Cherry plus a three-star high school group, so Omeire's transition determines whether a passing game that ranked 92nd in yards per game finds any lift in 2026.
Dorian Thomas took 56 catches and 560 yards out the door, and New Mexico did not simply reload with another proven pass-catcher, it went out and grabbed three transfers instead. Cade Keith (20 catches, 253 yards, 3 TD) becomes the clear veteran of the group, but Joey Olsen arrives from USC and Bear Tenney from Sacramento State to compete for the volume Thomas leaves behind, with Simon Mapa's 2 touchdowns on just 3 catches hinting he could be a red-zone factor if his role grows. Nobody in this room has run Thomas's kind of workload before, so Jason Eck's passing attack, already 92nd in yards per game, is banking on a committee rather than a single proven target.
Thirty-four sacks allowed last season, 119th nationally, is the number that defines this rebuild, and Jason Eck answered it by overhauling the room rather than patching it. James Bailey, Malik Aliane and Elvin Harris are the most senior names still around, but seven linemen departed and none of the returners carry a confirmed starting spot. Eck leaned on the high school class to restock instead of the portal, signing four-star-adjacent recruits Ty Gates, Sebastian Dawkins, Braden Chick, Danzel Newell and Jerbralon Stewart, a group that will need time even as New Mexico tries to protect a passing game that ranked 92nd in yards per game a year ago.
This line loses its most disruptive piece in Brett Karhu, whose 7.5 sacks and 11 TFL topped the group, but Mercury Swaim (52 tackles, 6.5 TFL) anchors a return that still ran up 36 sacks a year ago. Depth arrives via the portal in Jayden Marable, who brings 10 tackles and 2.5 TFL of Memphis production, while three-star high schoolers Brody Litton, Devin Palmer and Nick Barber add bodies without track records. New Mexico stuffed runs at an 18th-ranked clip in 2025, and with Darren Agu, Xavier Slayton and Brian Booker all back, that run defense should hold even as the pass rush replaces Karhu's snaps by committee rather than with one clear successor.
Jaxton Eck is the whole story here, a 128-tackle centerpiece with 6.5 TFL who anchored a front that ran up 36 sacks and stuffed runs at an 18th-ranked clip. New Mexico is restocking around him rather than replacing him, adding Boise State transfer Clay Martineau plus high school signees Ricklan Holmes II, Eli Cramer-Cronin and Hayes Baum. The run defense (21st in rushing yards allowed per game) should hold, but 89th in passing yards allowed per game is the number this incoming group needs to help fix in coverage.
The back end held up well in run support last year (114 rushing yards allowed per game, 21st) but leaked yardage through the air at 230 per game, and New Mexico answered that gap with numbers, not just one big name, bringing in Ormanie Arnold from Cincinnati plus three more three-star corners in Azari Warren, Xavier Rivera-Rogers and Brannon Hampton. That competition arrives around a group that stayed mostly intact, with Tavian Combs (72 tackles) and Frankie Edwards III (47 tackles) back as the anchors while Jon Johnson's 54 tackles at corner and Caleb Coleman's production at safety walk out the door. If Arnold pushes into the lineup opposite Edwards, the coverage numbers should climb closer to where the run defense already sits, since the havoc and TFL production up front (36 sacks, 14th) means these backs mostly just need to hold up on the outside.
New Mexico has to replace the most automatic leg in the Mountain West, Luke Drzewiecki, who hit 18 of 19 field goals and 90 points last season, and neither Grant Glasgow nor Christian Munguia arrives with any track record to lean on. Jason Eck went to the portal for punter Michael Kern out of California, whose 39 punts at a 41.5-yard average look built to replace Daniel Hughes' departed 45-yard mark, but the placekicking job is a genuine question mark between the incumbents and newcomers Nick Romero and Konner Olson. The punting should hold steady with Kern in the fold, while the field-goal operation is the one that will decide whether this special teams unit is a strength or a liability in 2026.
Jack Layne is back at quarterback after throwing for 2,486 yards, but the skill players who caught his passes and carried the load are gone: Damon Bankston (635 rushing yards), D.J. McKinney (464 yards, 7 TD), Keagan Johnson (59 catches, 754 yards) and Dorian Thomas (56 catches, 560 yards) all departed. Troy Omeire arrives from UNLV with 521 receiving yards on his résumé to help fill that void, but the defensive losses cut just as deep, with Keyshawn James-Newby's 9 sacks and 15 tackles for loss walking out the door too. Eric McClain and Ormanie Arnold add depth at corner, yet New Mexico's 9-4 season was built on production that mostly left with the transfer wave.
Layne threw for 2,486 yards and 13 touchdowns last season but also tossed 10 interceptions, and turning that ratio around is what separates New Mexico as a Mountain West contender from a middling repeat. With Damon Bankston's 635 rushing yards gone and Scottre Humphrey the returning back at 349, the run game alone will not carry the offense, so Layne has to hit Troy Omeire and the rest of the passing attack without the giveaways that dogged him. Cut the picks in half and this is a conference-title-caliber offense.
New Mexico went a perfect 6-0 straight up at home last year but limped to a 2-3 mark against the spread as a home favorite, meaning Jason Eck's crew won those games without covering the inflated expectations that came with them. The real value showed up away from University Stadium, where the Lobos went 4-2 against the spread and 3-2 as road underdogs, cashing tickets even in losses. Books have clearly adjusted to Eck's home dominance, so anyone still backing New Mexico chalk at home is fighting the same trend that burned bettors a season ago, while the road number remains the live angle into 2026.
