JaMarcus Shephard takes over a roster ranked 60th nationally in accumulated talent that produced a 2-10 season, which means the fix in Corvallis is less about finding pieces than about a first-year staff proving it can coach up what is already there.
Can Maalik Murphy hold together an offense that returns just 38.3% of its production around him? Almost everything Oregon State ran through last season is gone, so Murphy is not just the quarterback but the connective tissue for a new-look unit under JaMarcus Shephard. With that little continuity returning, Murphy's own experience becomes the offense's floor, and it likely keeps Oregon State competitive in flashes rather than consistent through a full season.
JaMarcus Shephard's first slate turns on three games where the Beavers are underdogs almost across the board: Texas Tech at home is the toughest, a 5% shot, sandwiched around road trips to Houston (13%) and Boise State (18%). Everything else on the schedule sits closer to a coin flip or better, from UTEP (65%) to Colorado State (54%) to Utah State (53%), which is where a first-year staff has to find the four wins that get Oregon State back toward bowl contention. Split those three low-probability games even once and the projected 4-7 mark starts looking conservative.

JaMarcus Shephard takes over a program that just went 2-10 and checks in at No. 98 in the power ratings, so there is no illusion of a quick fix here. The 1-1 conference mark is the lone sliver of context that does not indict the previous era, and it barely registers against a full season that bottomed out. Year one gives Shephard a clean runway with no prior results of his own to answer for, which is exactly the position a staff wants when the roster is this far from competitive.
The number that defines this offense isn't the 18.2 points per game, it's the 1.05 explosiveness mark that ranked 135th nationally, a unit that moved the chains at times (68th in success rate) but almost never broke a game open. Maalik Murphy takes over as the established 2026 starter after a season where Oregon State's passing attack was actually its strength (66th in yards per game) while the run game and third-down conversion (35.9%) collapsed. If Murphy can turn short-yardage success into chunk plays, the points-per-scoring-opportunity number (128th, just 2.89 points per trip) fixes itself, because the havoc-rate defense, 36th nationally in creating disruption, has already shown it can force extra possessions for him to work with.
The Maalik Murphy the stat card shows isn't the quarterback Oregon State is banking on for 2026 - the punting numbers are a clerical artifact, not his passing résumé, and new coach JaMarcus Shephard is rebuilding this room almost entirely through the portal and high school ranks around him anyway. Braden Atkinson arrives from Mercer with 3,611 yards and 34 touchdowns, a FCS résumé that dwarfs anything else in this room, including the departed Tristan Ti'a's modest 385 yards. With an offense that ranked 135th in explosiveness and 128th in points per scoring opportunity a season ago, Shephard needs whichever of Murphy or Atkinson wins meaningful reps to actually finish drives, not just move the ball to the 66th-ranked passing production this group already had.
Anthony Hankerson's 1088 yards walk out the door with him, and Oregon State replaces that workload with Cornell Hatcher Jr., whose 292 yards last season made him the clear returning option in the room. Vanderbilt transfer AJ Newberry (57 yards, 3 TD) adds a proven scoring threat, while Tre Garrison arrives as a high school signee out of Edna Karr with no college stats yet to his name. Behind a line that allowed 26 sacks and an offense that ranked 103rd in rushing yards per game, this group's numbers will only move if the blocking does.
No returning receiver topped 139 yards last season, which explains why a passing game stuck at 66th nationally in yards per game still couldn't lift an offense scoring 18.2 points a game. JaMarcus Shephard answered that by importing production rather than hoping for a leap, bringing in Adonis McDaniel (52 catches, 676 yards, 6 TD at Mercer) and Xayvion Noland (37 catches, 776 yards, 7 TD at Texas-Rio Grande Valley) to instantly outproduce anyone on the returning depth chart. Eddie Freauff and Zack Card still give the room some familiarity, but the two transfers are the actual foundation of whatever passing identity this offense builds in 2026.
Eric Olsen arrives from Utah Tech with 51 catches and 566 yards from last season, instantly outclassing anything Oregon State got from the position in Corvallis, where Bryce Caufield's 29 grabs led all departed tight ends and Gabe Milbourn's 17 catches were the top return production. Under new coach JaMarcus Shephard, Olsen projects as the clear starter and the closest thing this offense has to a proven pass-catching threat at any position group, which matters given an attack that ranked 135th in explosiveness and 128th in points per scoring opportunity. Milbourn still gives Olsen a complementary target with real snaps behind him, but the tight end room's ceiling in 2026 runs through the transfer, not the holdovers.
JaMarcus Shephard inherits an offense that managed just 1.05 in explosiveness (135th) and 2.89 points per scoring trip, numbers that trace straight back to a front that could not sustain drives. Ten linemen are out, including Jacob Strand, Zander Esty, JT Hand, Tyler Morano and center Van Wells, so Shephard rebuilt almost entirely through the portal, bringing in tackles Kwan Johnson, Broderick Shull and Teko Shoats alongside interior additions Carter Guillaume and Michael Langi. With Nathan Elu, Ben Hartman and Jacob Anderson the most senior of the returners, this group has to be judged on 2026 tape, not last year's 5.05 yards per play, because almost none of the players who produced that number are still in the room.
Oregon State's front loses its two most disruptive linemen in Thomas Collins (30 tackles, 4.5 TFL) and Jojo Johnson (2.5 sacks, 6.5 TFL), gutting a group that already managed just 16 sacks a year ago. Jacob Schuster (2 sacks, 2 TFL) and Tygee Hill (24 tackles) carry the returning production, but JaMarcus Shephard's staff had to go outside for bodies, bringing in Daniel Matagi, Ish Findlayter and edge rushers Adel Dorr and Caleb Metzner, none of whom have a college snap on record. With four unproven 3-star arrivals expected to play early, the pass rush that ranked 118th in sacks is more likely to stay stuck there than to jump forward in year one.
Aiden Sullivan (72 tackles, 7 TFL) anchors this group and gives new coach JaMarcus Shephard a proven downhill piece, but the tackle production around him took a hit with Dexter Foster (52 tackles) and Nikko Taylor (30 tackles, 5.5 TFL) both gone. Takari Hickle's 38 tackles and 2 sacks make him the clear second option, while transfer Dylan Layne arrives from Idaho with 10 tackles of game experience to plug the gap immediately. Jeremiah Brown, a high school signee out of San Jacinto, joins as a longer-term addition rather than an instant fix, so the early snaps fall to the returning names as Oregon State tries to shore up a defense that ranked 118th in sacks and 111th in yards per play allowed a year ago.
Jaheim Patterson's 67 tackles and both Kobe Singleton and Mason White are gone from a secondary that already gave up 221 passing yards a game, so JaMarcus Shephard is rebuilding the back end around Sailasa Vadrawale III and Trey Glasper, who managed 31 and 23 tackles respectively behind a front that generated just 16 sacks. Harlem Howard adds depth after 17 tackles, but the newcomers, Kai Wheaton out of Allen and Isaiah Houi from Eastern Illinois, arrive as three-stars with no meaningful FBS production between them. With so little proven cover corner experience replacing Patterson's snaps, the coverage numbers are more likely to slip further than hold at 71st in passing yards allowed.
Caleb Ojeda made just 6 of 13 field goals last season with a long of 53, so the leg swing at Reser Stadium in 2026 comes down to whether he tightens up that accuracy or Jadyn Oh, the Syracuse transfer, takes the job outright. Punter AJ Winsor is the steady piece, coming back off a 44.7-yard average on 62 boots, giving new coach JaMarcus Shephard at least one settled specialist spot while he sorts out the rest. Long snapper is a full reset with Dylan Black gone and both Tug Sanford and Jonathan Zarut arriving as transfers to compete alongside incumbent Jackson Robertson, who has no stats on file either.
Thirty-five players out and twenty in means JaMarcus Shephard is essentially starting from scratch in year one, and the wreckage shows most at receiver, where Trent Walker, David Wells Jr. and Taz Reddicks are all gone. Mercer transfers Adonis McDaniel and quarterback Braden Atkinson (34 TD passes last season) arrive with real production, but Maalik Murphy is the man running this offense, not Atkinson, and he's throwing to a receiver room that's been almost entirely rebuilt through the portal. With Anthony Hankerson's 1088 rushing yards also gone and a No. 100 recruiting class offering little reinforcement, the Beavers are betting heavily on out-of-conference transfers to replace departed production, not on high school talent catching up.
Oregon State handed Murphy the job, but the numbers around him are thin, Anthony Hankerson's 1,088 rushing yards are gone and Cornell Hatcher Jr. managed just 292 last season, so Vanderbilt transfer AJ Newberry has to become a real complement fast even though he rushed for only 57 yards a year ago. If Murphy cannot lean on a run game and instead has to throw Oregon State out of trouble every week, a roster that finished 2-10 and ranks 100th in recruiting will not have the horses to hang around in one-score games.
Oregon State's number to know is 0-4-1 against the spread away from Corvallis, a mark that mirrors an 0-5 straight-up road record and shows a team that simply could not compete once it left home. Home was a different story, with the Beavers covering 43% of the time and going 1-2 as home favorites, but the winless road ledger as underdogs erased any of that value. New coach JaMarcus Shephard inherits a program that bettors should treat as a road fade until it proves otherwise, with the losing-week-after-a-loss trend (2-6-1) suggesting these Beavers had no answer once games started slipping away.
