Sean Lewis has built a top-ten scoring defense and a 9-4 outfit from a roster that ranks just 86th nationally in talent, and that gap between recruiting and results is the whole story heading into year three.
Can Sean Lewis replicate a top-ten scoring defense while losing Owen Chambliss and 18.5% of his returning production on that side of the ball? The likely outcome is a step back in efficiency early, since no single returning name in the facts can replace Chambliss's 90 tackles and 8.5 TFL, and a defense rebuilding almost from scratch rarely repeats its ceiling. Denegal and Sutton give the offense a proven identity to lean on while Lewis retools the unit that carried San Diego State to 9-4.
San Diego State's ceiling gets decided on the road. A trip to Boise State (37% win) is the toughest test on the slate, followed by a visit to UCLA (46%) and a road trip to Toledo (55%), and going 1-2 or worse in that stretch is exactly how a 7-4 projection turns into something shakier for Sean Lewis. The rest of the schedule, from Portland State at home to Colorado State on the road, sets up as manageable, which means those three away games are the whole ballgame for a Pac-12 team that just won nine games and expects to compete again.

Sean Lewis pushed San Diego State to a 9-4 mark and a 6-2 league record in year two, but the underlying numbers say sell high. The offense needed just 13.5 yards per point against a 14.1 league median, a finishing efficiency rate that rarely holds up two years running, and in conference play the Aztecs won at a 75.0% clip despite yardage margins that only projected 62.6%. With just 54% of production back overall, the offensive continuity (88.8%) has to carry a defense that returns only 18.5%, and last year's knack for making the numbers work is the part of this roster least likely to repeat in 2026.
San Diego State won nine games last fall on the strength of a defense that ranked 6th in points allowed and 5th in yards per play, while an offense stuck 125th in passing yards per game leaned almost entirely on the ground. Jayden Denegal returns as the settled starter after throwing 9 touchdowns against 8 interceptions in 2025, and that turnover rate is the real swing factor for 2026 given the offense's 130th-ranked third down conversion rate leaves little margin for giveaways. Cleaning up those picks, not adding more explosive plays, is what turns Sean Lewis's ground-heavy attack from a game manager into a real complement to that top-10 defense.
Jayden Denegal returns as the starter after a 2025 that showed the split screen defining this offense: 9 touchdowns against 8 interceptions, buried behind a passing attack ranked 125th nationally while the ground game hummed at 19th. San Diego State didn't sit still at the position anyway, adding Stone Saunders via transfer from Kentucky as insurance behind Denegal rather than a threat to unseat him. The real path to fixing an offense that converted just 31.4% of third downs runs through Denegal cutting down turnovers and letting the run game keep setting up manageable distances, not a quarterback change.
Lucky Sutton is the whole story here, a 1,292-yard back who barely needed help carrying a run game that finished 19th nationally in rushing yards per game despite a passing attack stuck at 125th. Christian Washington gives Sean Lewis a real complement behind him, and the departures of Byron Cardwell Jr. and Cincere Rhaney barely register when the top two backs both return. Javion Kinnard arrives from Colorado State as a receiving option out of the backfield, and with Jordin Thomas also in the mix, San Diego State can keep leaning on the ground game to mask an offense that still struggles to move the chains on third down.
San Diego State's passing game was the problem last year, 125th nationally, and the receiver room did not lose much to the portal beyond depth pieces like Mikey Welsh. Jordan Napier (48-632-2) and Donovan Brown (33-518-2) both come back as the top targets, and Bryant transfer Aldrich Doe adds another proven college producer at 37 catches for 467 yards. The bigger swing factor is volume and explosiveness rather than personnel, since a receiving corps this experienced should push that 31.4% third-down rate and 1.18 explosiveness mark up if the passing offense simply throws the ball downfield more often.
San Diego State's tight end room was never a receiving hub even before Seth Adams left, and nothing here signals that changes for 2026. Jackson Ford, who managed just 10 catches for 86 yards and a score, is the closest thing to a proven target, with Ryan Wolfer's 2 catches for 37 yards a distant second. The bigger addition is bodies, not production, as three-star signees Jack Ellis, Crosby Kelly and Elijah Muliufi arrive alongside unproven returners Jacob Alvarez, Connor Irons and Jack Lua, which fits a passing attack that ranked 125th in yards per game and 130th on third downs, meaning this group's blocking matters more than what it catches.
San Diego State ran for 199 yards a game (19th nationally) behind this front last season but stalled on money downs, converting just 31.4% of third tries, and now seven of those linemen are out the door. Sean Lewis rebuilt around class-year seniority (Joseph Borjon, Cam May, Kalan Ellis) and a wave of newcomers, pulling transfer tackles Evan Lawrence from Indiana and Mercer Luniewski from Michigan State along with his brother Charlton at guard, plus high school signee Jarvis Williams out of Valley View as an interior addition. With no depth chart to lean on and this much turnover up front, the safer bet is regression in pass protection before the ground game finds its footing again.
Niles King's 6.5 sacks and Sam Benjamin's production off the edge are gone, and nobody left on the roster cracked even two sacks a year ago, which is a real problem for a defense that already ranked 30th in sacks and 93rd in tackles for loss. Oregon State transfer Kai Wallin, who posted 2 TFL last season, becomes the closest thing to a proven pass rusher on the roster, working alongside Amari Comier and Brady Nassar while a run defense that finished 109th in run-stuff rate leans on true freshmen like Dominic Coelho and Koi Taiese to add bodies up front. The scheme still suppressed points at a top-10 clip in 2025, but that was built on back-end coverage and staying-on-schedule numbers rather than disruption, so San Diego State is betting its havoc creation improves with less proven talent than it had a year ago.
Owen Chambliss took 90 tackles, 4 sacks and 8.5 TFL out the door, and Mister Williams and Brady Anderson are gone too, gutting the group that anchored a defense allowing just 163 passing yards per game. Tano Letuli, who managed only 27 tackles behind that veteran trio, now becomes the clear returning presence, with Jayden Kendricks and Etene Pritchard unproven and no established tackle numbers behind him. San Diego State plugged the gap with Weber State transfer Sione Hala, whose 7 tackles and half a sack are modest, and JUCO addition Cameron Cooper, which means this defense that ranked 109th in run-stuff rate will lean on Letuli to hold the middle together while the newcomers find their footing.
San Diego State loses its top two tacklers in the secondary, Eric Butler (39 tackles) and Bryce Phillips (32 tackles), but the group that finished 6th in passing yards allowed per game returns a deep safety rotation in Josiah Cox, Josh Hunter, Jelani McLaughlin and Prince Williams. The corner room gets rebuilt through the portal, with Mike Lindsay arriving from Idaho State and Carsten Mamaril from Portland State to fill the Phillips vacancy, while Ohio transfer Jalen Thomeson brings 86 tackles and 7 TFL of proven production to pair with the safeties. That mix of returning coverage pieces and portal reinforcements should keep the back end stout even if the front seven's 93rd-ranked tackles-for-loss total keeps forcing DBs to finish plays in space.
Gabriel Plascencia's departure leaves a real void, 92 points and a 53-yard long, and the incumbent options on hand offer little proof it gets replaced. Nick Clegg has yet to attempt a field goal in his stats, and Arizona transfer Tyler Prasuhn arrives just 0 of 1 on his own kicks, so the job is unsettled by production rather than by competition. Punting rests on Tashi Dorje's small three-punt, 50-yard sample rather than departed Hunter Green's 63-punt workload, meaning both specialist spots are effectively rebuilding on thin evidence heading into 2026.
San Diego State lost its top three tacklers off last year's defense in Owen Chambliss, Dalesean Staley and Trey White, and answered with volume rather than star power, stacking the back seven with Jalen Thomeson (86 tackles, 7 TFL at Ohio), Solomon Davis and Caleb Ricks. The offense leans on continuity instead, with Jayden Denegal back after throwing for 1,810 yards and pairing him with a retooled skill group in Aldrich Doe (37 catches, 467 yards at Bryant) and Javion Kinnard, who caught 18 balls for 228 yards at Colorado State. A middling recruiting class rank of 83 makes the portal, not high school signing day, the engine of this rebuild.
San Diego State's offense runs through Lucky Sutton, who piled up 1292 yards and 10 touchdowns behind Jayden Denegal's up-and-down arm (1810 yards, 9 TD, 8 INT). With Christian Washington also back and Javion Kinnard added from Colorado State, the Aztecs have the backfield depth to lean on the ground game and shield Denegal from the interception risk that dogged him last season, and Sutton's ability to carry that load again decides whether this offense stays balanced or grows one-dimensional.
Sean Lewis has turned Snapdragon Stadium into a betting trap for anyone taking points against San Diego State, with the Aztecs a perfect 6-0 against the spread at home and 5-0 as home favorites. That same team is break-even on the road at 3-3 against the spread and cratered as a road underdog, going 0-1. The lean for 2026 is obvious: back San Diego State whenever the line sets up at home, and stay away the moment they leave San Diego.
