Bronco Mendenhall is rebuilding almost from scratch with just 36% production returning, and whether Utah State's defense can climb out of the 91st-ranked scoring unit it fielded in 2025 will decide more of 2026 than anything McCae Hillstead does at quarterback.
With only 18.6% of offensive production back, every skill-position question funnels through one man taking his first snaps in Logan. McCae Hillstead inherits an offense stripped of its identity, not just its quarterback, and there is no proven complementary piece to lighten the load early. Expect growing pains through non-conference play as Hillstead and a nearly all-new supporting cast learn each other in real games rather than a smooth transition.
Utah State's actual season lives away from Logan, where trips to Washington (12%) and rival Utah (13%) sandwich a visit to Boise State (20%) that will decide whether year two under Bronco Mendenhall looks like progress or treading water. The rest of the slate is winnable at close to a coin flip, home dates with Washington State (50%) and Fresno State (46%), a trip to Oregon State (47%), which is exactly why those three road gauntlet games matter so much. Go 1-2 or worse in that stretch and the projected 5-7 mark holds; steal one road upset and the 49% bowl number starts looking conservative.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The 6-7 finish flattered Bronco Mendenhall's first team in Logan more than the underlying play did. A plus turnover margin and a conference-game yardage margin that ran well behind Utah State's actual in-league win rate both point the same direction: the Aggies won more than the tape or the ball security earned, and both are due to even out. The offense also scored efficiently, needing fewer yards per point than the league median, which is exactly the kind of edge that rarely repeats, so a #92 power rating and a step back in 2026 look more likely than another six-win push.
Utah State's offense was legitimately explosive last year, ranking 18th nationally in explosiveness and 16th in points per scoring opportunity, but pass protection was a sieve at 129th in sacks allowed and the defense bled 441 yards a game. McCae Hillstead, the BYU transfer now running the show, inherits a line that has to hold up better than it did in 2025 or that big-play ceiling never gets reached. The turnover margin of plus-6 papered over a lot of defensive issues last season, and this group cannot count on that luck repeating without real gains against the run and through the air.
Bryson Barnes threw for 2,802 yards and left as a graduate, so Utah State hands the offense to McCae Hillstead, the BYU transfer whose modest 33 passing yards there belie the job he now owns outright. He inherits a line that allowed 42 sacks, a real problem for an offense that otherwise hummed at 6.28 yards per play and 4.49 points per scoring trip. Anthony Garcia (79 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT) and Kaden Cox return as depth, but this is Hillstead's offense, and whether he can protect the ball behind that porous front decides how much of last year's explosiveness survives the quarterback change.
Miles Davis and his 732 yards are gone, leaving Javen Jacobs, who managed just 429 yards on the ground last fall, as the clear lead back by default rather than production. Oklahoma State transfer Sesi Vailahi arrives to push for carries after a modest 152-yard, 2-touchdown season, while Noah White's role as a receiving option out of the backfield (8 catches, 149 yards) gives this group a change-of-pace piece behind an offense that ranked 25th nationally in yards per play. The bigger issue is protection up front, not talent in the backfield, with 42 sacks allowed a season ago threatening to cap whatever Jacobs and Vailahi can produce in 2026.
Braden Pegan (60 catches, 925 yards, 5 TD) and Brady Boyd (46 catches, 743 yards, 8 TD) are gone, and none of the returning names, Ty Olsen, Cade Baker, Nikko Boncore, Tate Kjar, Jackson Olsen, Demick Starling, carry any real receiving production from 2025. That gap gets filled almost entirely from the portal, led by Javon Robinson, who caught 58 passes for 599 yards and 4 touchdowns at Georgia State, with Eli Wood (16 catches, 205 yards, 2 TD at Virginia) as a complementary piece. Bronco Mendenhall is betting that Robinson can replicate that volume in Logan, because an offense that already ranks 18th in explosiveness and 16th in points per scoring opportunity needs someone to actually catch the ball on early downs, not just a name to plug into the lineup.
Utah State's leading returning tight end caught two passes last year, so this room is being rebuilt almost entirely from outside the roster. Broc Lane's 19 catches and Josh Sterzer's production both leave, and none of the returners in Kache Kaio, Alex Faiivae, Kyle Lively or Chase Tuatagaloa have shown anything on tape yet. The fix is external: high school arrivals Jude Nelson and Preston McDaniel add size to the class, but Collin Remenowsky, a transfer from Ashland University, is the one with a path to snaps right away in an offense that already ranks 18th nationally in explosiveness and 16th in points per scoring opportunity.
The 42 sacks allowed a year ago, tied to a middling 40.9% success rate up front, is the number Bronco Mendenhall has to fix, and the fix leans heavily on continuity rather than a full overhaul. Twelve linemen return against six departures, with juniors Adam Pond, George Maile and Tavo Motu'apuaka among the most experienced bodies in the room, giving the staff actual bodies with reps rather than a blank slate. The five incoming three-star signees, led by tackles Luke Baker and John Randle Jr., are depth and competition pieces behind that returning group, not the foundation of the room.
A defense that allowed 441 yards per game (131st) and got gashed for 259 through the air (125th) still returns its two most productive interior linemen, Carson Tujague and Tyree Morris, who combined for most of the tackle production up front. The bigger question is depth behind them: Gabriel Iniguez Jr. and Bo Maile are gone, and Utah State turned to the portal for James Jennette off Virginia Tech's edge and Texas Tech's Kasen Long, neither of whom did much last season, plus untested juco arrival Viliami Tapa'atoutai. With sacks (29, 50th) actually a relative strength but havoc rate down at 114th, Tujague and Morris have to turn more of those hurries into disruptive plays or Bronco Mendenhall's defense stays stuck in the same rut against the run and pass alike.
Utah State loses John Miller's 118 tackles and 8 sacks, the clear engine of a defense that already gave up 441 yards a game, but Bronson Olevao Jr. returns off an 88-tackle, 7.5-TFL season to anchor the position on his own. Chris Joe adds another proven disruptor with 4 sacks and 6 TFL, giving the Aggies real returning production even after Miller and William Holmes are gone. The bigger question is depth behind that pair, since the incoming class of Brody Flores, Harrison Taggart, John McClellan and Asher Cunningham is unproven at this level, and a group that finished 108th in run-stuff rate needs one of those newcomers to hit fast.
Brevin Hamblin's 110 tackles anchor the back end, but a secondary that gave up 259 passing yards per game (125th) is losing Noah Avinger's 81 tackles and Ike Larsen's 56 without an obvious like-for-like replacement. Utah State leaned on the transfer portal to patch it, bringing in David Kabongo from Oklahoma State at safety and corners Markie Grant from Wyoming and Antonio Bluiett from North Dakota, while D'Angelo Mayes and Bryson Taylor return to hold down the corner spots. The pass defense numbers were a problem in 2025, and this group is more retooled than reloaded, so another step back through the air is the more likely outcome before the newcomers settle in.
Utah State brought in Kian Afrookhteh from Coastal Carolina, where he hit 15 of 19 field goals with a 44-yard long, and that transfer arrival sets up a real camp battle since incumbent Tanner Rinker already has a 49-yard long and 84 points on his own resume. Whoever wins that job, the bigger question is at punter, where Landon Rehkow returns off a 42.9 yard average across 68 punts and figures to hold the job over Dylan Sprague. With both long snappers, Hyrum Hatch and Owen Edwards, back in the fold, the operation around the specialists is set even as the kicking competition plays out.
Bryson Barnes' 2,802 yards and 18 touchdowns walk out the door with Braden Pegan and Brady Boyd, but Bronco Mendenhall rebuilt around volume rather than a single flashy replacement. McCae Hillstead, in from BYU with all of 33 passing yards on his resume, is the settled starter, and he gets a fresh set of hands in Javon Robinson, who caught 58 balls for 599 yards at Georgia State, plus Eli Wood and Sesi Vailahi filling the skill spots vacated by Miles Davis. The defense loses more than it adds on paper, with John Miller's 118 tackles and 8 sacks gone, so Harrison Taggart and Markie Grant have to grow up fast for this to look like a step forward rather than a rebuilding year.
Bryson Barnes threw for 2,802 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, and Utah State hands the offense to McCae Hillstead, a BYU transfer with only 33 career passing yards on the books. He gets a genuine weapon in Javon Robinson, who caught 58 passes for 599 yards at Georgia State, and a proven runner in Javen Jacobs, so the pieces are there if Hillstead can operate with the confidence his stat line does not yet show.
Utah State went 6-7 straight up but covered spreads at a 77% clip, a gap that big usually means the bettors and the scoreboard disagreed all year. Home was the extreme version of that split: 5-1 straight up but 6-0 against the number, with a perfect 4-0 mark as a favorite, meaning Logan was consistently beating expectations even in the one loss. Bronco Mendenhall's group also covered both times as a ranked-team underdog despite losing those games outright, the kind of profile that points to a roster playing tougher than its record and one that oddsmakers still have not fully priced in for year two.
