Derek Mason takes the field in year three with a roster ranked 110th nationally in talent trying to climb out of a power rating hole at 130, so any real jump for Middle Tennessee has to come from coaching and scheme squeezing more out of less rather than a talent infusion that simply is not there.
Can Roman Gagliano hold together a Middle Tennessee offense that returns only 35.5% of its production, with the rushing attack losing its top back and the defense returning even less at 32.2%? The math points to Gagliano shouldering more of the load than a year ago, not less, and with the ground game gutted, Derek Mason's offense is likely to lean on him dropping back early and often rather than easing him in behind a run-first script.
Middle Tennessee's 129th-ranked schedule sounds soft, but the projected 4-8 mark reflects a slate where almost nothing is a clean win outside Murray State. The season turns on the road grind at Kansas (9%), Liberty (25%) and Jacksonville State (26%), three games Derek Mason's group is projected to lose more often than not. Split even the coin-flip spots at Sam Houston (50%) and New Mexico State (55%) and the bowl math starts to look real instead of the 24% odds on the card.

Derek Mason's third year produced the same shape of trouble as his first two: a 3-9 finish, a 2-6 mark in Conference USA play, and a power rating that sits at 130th nationally. There is no single transfer or scheme shift that explains the stall, which is itself the story heading into 2026, this program has not found the on-field traction to climb out of the bottom tier of its own league. Another season treading water at this level turns the conversation from patience to results, and Middle Tennessee has not shown either the roster or the record to argue otherwise yet.
Roman Gagliano is projected to run an offense that was already unbalanced without him under center, a passing game ranked 28th nationally in yards per game propping up a run game stuck at 121st. His 2025 line of 1011 yards, 7 touchdowns and zero interceptions shows a clean decision-maker, but Middle Tennessee scored just 3.20 points per scoring opportunity, meaning drives keep stalling short of the end zone. The defense is the bigger problem, allowing 30.9 points per game with a pass defense ranked 124th, so Gagliano may have to outscore teams through the air rather than lean on balance.
Nicholas Vattiato's 2,157 yards walk out the door, and Roman Gagliano is the front-runner to replace that production after clicking for 1,011 yards and 7 touchdowns against zero interceptions in relief snaps. The camp battle is not settled, with Peter Costelli's 4 interceptions in limited work and newcomers Rocco Williams and Mason Mallory still in the mix, but Gagliano's clean turnover ledger makes him the man taking first-team reps. The bigger issue is what is around him: a line that allowed 30 sacks and a run game that ranked 121st in rushing yards per game gave Vattiato little margin, and Gagliano inherits the same problem.
Jekail Middlebrook's 752 yards on the ground are gone, leaving DJ Taylor (199 yards, 2 TD) and Antonio Martin (129 yards, 1 TD) as the top returning options in a run game that managed just 106 yards per game, 121st nationally, in 2025. Derek Mason added a namesake reinforcement in Antonio Martin Jr., who put up an identical 129 yards and 1 TD at Kansas State last season, plus three-star Bishop Hartley signee Robert Lathon Jr. to widen the room. With Middle Tennessee's offense already leaning on its passing attack (265 yards per game, 28th nationally) over the run, the backfield's job in 2026 is less about explosive plays and more about finally pushing that ground average off the bottom third of the country.
Myles Butler's 52 catches walk out the door, but Cam'ron Lacy (38-529-3) and AJ Jones (28-216-5) give Middle Tennessee a proven top two even as the passing game finished 28th nationally in yards per game last season. The real question is whether that efficient air attack can find more explosive plays, since the offense ranked just 87th in explosiveness and 117th in points per scoring opportunity a year ago. Depth arrives via the high school ranks with three-star signees Bryson Maddox, Ethan Sherman and Ziyon Butler, while Markus Allen transfers in from Mississippi State to add another body to a room that otherwise leans on Landon Collins and Kason Stokes for snaps behind the starters.
Hunter Tipton's 39 catches walked out the door, and nobody left behind has caught more than two passes. Tayvion Galloway and Evan Poticher combined for three grabs last season, while Brody Benke, Jadin Hambrick, Wilson Hodges and Sawyer Lovvorn arrive with no game production at all. That leaves a passing attack that ranked 28th nationally in yards per game with essentially zero proven tight end target to lean on in 2026, putting more weight on the receivers and backfield to cover the gap.
Thirty sacks allowed and a run game stuck at 106 yards per game (121st) tell the real story up front, and Derek Mason answered by turning over most of the room rather than patching it. Twelve linemen are out the door, so this is effectively a new group built around the class-year veterans still on hand, Diego Blattler and juniors Quentin Butler and Tim Jacobs, alongside interior additions Reese Tripp from Minnesota and Brennan Smith from Mississippi State. With no depth chart to lean on and that much turnover in the interior especially, the passing game's 265 yards per game only holds up if this rebuilt front cuts down the sack total, because 106 rushing yards a game will not.
Zeion Simpson-Smith's 19 tackles and 3 sacks were the only real production up front in a season that let opponents pass for 256 yards a game, 124th nationally. Anthony Bynum, Shakai Woods and Damonte Smith took their combined edge rush and interior push out the door, leaving Felix Hixon and a mostly stat-less returning group at end in Aidan Butts, Tiyyan Robinson and Matthew Blomquist to hold the line. Derek Mason went shopping for answers instead, pulling in edge rushers Kaven Call and Jonas Jimerson plus interior additions Justin Bodford, Jayden Arenas-Michel and Christien Moreau, a haul that has to translate into pressure fast given a defense that ranked just 89th in sacks a year ago.
Parker Hughes' 89 tackles are gone, and Middle Tennessee replaces that snap-to-snap production with volume, not a proven complement. Reggie Johnson is the real building block here, his 10 TFL and 3.5 sacks giving Derek Mason's defense its only established disruptor as it tries to climb out of a group that let 256 passing yards a game go in 2025 (124th nationally). Korey Smith adds a steady 38 tackles, but Jackson State transfer Ashton Taylor arrives with modest junior-college-level numbers, and the room otherwise leans on unproven pieces like BJ Ausmer and Shane Rochelle to somehow hold a defense that ranked 116th in points allowed together.
Middle Tennessee gutted a secondary that surrendered 256 passing yards per game (124th nationally) and is betting on volume over pedigree to fix it. Jackson Lowe and Kalen Woods, both with 36 tackles in 2025, anchor the back end while five newcomers arrive at once, led by James Johnson (5 catches, 23 yards allowed at USC) and safeties Bryce Williams, Dyson McCutcheon and Justis Haggard. With Juwon Gaston, Brendon Harris and Abdul Muhammad all gone from a unit that still ranked 15th in run-stuff rate, the tackling for loss should hold up even as the pass defense leans on unproven transfers to find its footing.
Ashton Logan's return anchors the one settled piece of this unit, and his 44.6-yard average gives Middle Tennessee a legitimate weapon in field position battles it lost too often during a 3-9 season. The bigger question is who kicks field goals: Jacob Hathaway's 11-of-14 season and 60 points walk out the door, and incumbent Wyatt Joyce, who has no stats on file, has to prove he can replace that production alongside Susquehanna transfer Dominic Bourgeois. With three long snappers back but zero collective kicking track record beyond Logan, this group's ceiling depends on Joyce or Bourgeois simply becoming a reliable scorer.
Nicholas Vattiato, Jekail Middlebrook, Myles Butler, Nahzae Cox and Hunter Tipton are all gone, stripping Middle Tennessee of its top passer, its lead back and its top three pass catchers in one offseason. Roman Gagliano, who threw for 1011 yards and 7 touchdowns without an interception in his snaps last year, projects as the guy running that offense in 2026, but he does it with Antonio Martin Jr. and Markus Allen, a pair of unproven transfers, filling the void behind and around him. A 119th-ranked class and a defense losing Parker Hughes, Anthony Bynum and Shakai Woods means this roster overhaul is company-wide, not just at quarterback.
Roman Gagliano threw for 1011 yards and 7 touchdowns against zero interceptions last season, and Middle Tennessee's entire 2026 offense rides on whether that clean, efficient stretch was a foundation or a small sample. With Jekail Middlebrook's 752 rushing yards gone and DJ Taylor the leading returning back at just 199, Gagliano cannot lean on the run game and has to keep spreading the ball to Cam'ron Lacy and AJ Jones at high volume. If Gagliano's turnover-free efficiency scales up over a full season, the Blue Raiders have a real offensive identity to build around.
Middle Tennessee went 3-9 straight up in 2025 but 6-6 against the number, and the split gets sharper in conference play, where the Blue Raiders covered 5-3 despite a 2-6 mark on the field. That gap tells the real story under Derek Mason: this roster has been closer to competitive than its record shows, and bettors adjusted for it late, backing them 5-4 against the spread the week after a loss. A 33% cover rate as a home favorite is the one soft spot, meaning the market still does not trust this group to close out games it is supposed to win.
