Only 26% of production returns for a roster that ranks 6th nationally in accumulated talent, which means Kiffin is essentially building a new team from a five-star pantry rather than patching holes.
Can Sam Leavitt win with almost no one else around him who has done it in this offense before? With just 13.6% of offensive production returning, Leavitt is inheriting an entirely rebuilt cast of pass-catchers and blockers rather than a system with proven pieces already in place. Kiffin's track record of building quarterback-friendly offenses on the fly is the best reason to bet Leavitt adjusts faster than the unit's inexperience would otherwise suggest.
Lane Kiffin inherits a slate ranked 11th in difficulty, and it's front-loaded with the games that will define whether year one is a launch or a slog. Texas comes to Baton Rouge as a true coin-flip test at 39%, and the stretch that follows at Ole Miss, home against Alabama, and at Tennessee all sit in the same razor-thin 54-56% band. Sandwiched between manageable trips to Auburn and Arkansas, that four-game run against Texas, Ole Miss, Alabama and Tennessee is the real referendum on Kiffin's debut, not the eventual record against Louisiana Tech or McNeese.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Lane Kiffin inherits a team that finished 7-6 but was living dangerously underneath it, going 3-4 in one-score games and posting a turnover margin that flattered the record more than the tape did. The bigger red flag is a roster that returns just 26% of its production overall, with the offense keeping only 13.6% of what made it go, so the No. 9 power rating on paper says far less about what Kiffin actually has to work with in 2026. This was a group that needed 14.6 yards for every point it scored against league median 14.1, leaving points on the field even in a winning year, and that inefficiency, not the record, is the real starting point for his first season.
LSU's problem in 2025 was never the defense, a group that held opponents to 19.8 points and 329 yards per game while forcing enough takeaways for a +7 turnover margin. It was an offense that ranked 108th in success rate and 125th in rushing, a unit Lane Kiffin now hands to Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt after his 1628-yard, 10-touchdown season out west. Leavitt does not need to be spectacular, he needs to make LSU's offense simply average enough to stop wasting what should be one of the better defenses in the conference.
LSU didn't tinker at quarterback for 2026, it replaced Garrett Nussmeier outright with Sam Leavitt, whose 1628 yards, 10 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions at Arizona State arrive as a clear upgrade in ball security over the outgoing starter's 5-pick season. Lane Kiffin inherits an offense that ranked 108th in success rate and 99th in yards per play a year ago, with sacks allowed (29) and a 105-yard rushing attack among the biggest drags on production, so Leavitt's efficiency matters more than his arm talent here. USC transfer Husan Longstreet gives Kiffin a proven backup arm behind him, but this is Leavitt's offense to fix from the opening snap.
Caden Durham is gone, and with him the closest thing LSU had to a workhorse, so Harlem Berry, who managed 491 yards despite an offense that ranked 125th in rushing yards per game, becomes the clear focal point. Lane Kiffin didn't stand pat behind him, importing Dilin Jones from Wisconsin and Rod Gainey Jr. from Charlotte to add bodies with actual college production rather than projects. The bet is that volume and competition fix what was a broken ground game, since none of last year's holdovers beyond Berry ever carried a real load.
Lane Kiffin didn't just tweak this receiver room, he overhauled it, importing Jayce Brown from Kansas State and Jackson Harris from Hawai'i to pair with Tre' Brown, whose 762 yards last season now look like the floor for an offense that finished 111th in total yards. Harris arrives with 963 yards and 12 touchdowns already on his résumé, a bigger red-zone threat than anything LSU had after Nic Anderson and Chris Hilton Jr. combined for just two scores between them. Toss in blue-chip high schoolers Corey Barber Jr. and Eugene Wilson III and this is now a talent upgrade at the position that has to translate into more than 22.8 points a game.
Trey'Dez Green is the one constant in a tight end room Lane Kiffin otherwise remade from scratch, and his 433 yards and 7 touchdowns already made him the most productive weapon in a passing game that still ranked just 63rd nationally. Bauer Sharp is gone, so Pittsburgh transfer Malachi Thomas, who caught 13 balls for 192 yards last season, arrives as the ready-made complement rather than a projects, with four-star signee JC Anderson and Oregon transfer Zach Grace stacking bodies behind them. With a rushing attack stuck at 125th nationally, Kiffin has every incentive to lean on Green and Thomas early and often to keep this offense out of the third-and-long mess it lived in a year ago.
A line that allowed 29 sacks and cleared just 105 rushing yards per game last season is getting almost entirely rebuilt under Lane Kiffin, not patched up. Jordan Seaton, a five-star addition from Colorado, and Brysten Martinez headline the tackle overhaul, while Aliou Bah and Devin Harper arrive to fix the interior after transferring in from Maryland and Ole Miss, and Sean Thompkins joins via the portal from Baylor to add tackle depth. With 11 linemen gone and no reliable way to know who actually started up front last year among returners like Bo Bordelon and Braelin Moore, this group is best read as Kiffin's own creation, and the 125th-ranked rushing attack it inherits gives it nowhere to hide early.
LSU's returning line production is thin, Dylan Carpenter and Dominick McKinley combined for just 3 sacks a year ago, so Lane Kiffin went to the portal to fix a pass rush that managed only 27 sacks. Princewill Umanmielen arrives from Ole Miss with 9 sacks and 13 TFL, instantly the most disruptive edge on the roster, and Jordan Ross adds another proven Power Four body after 4 sacks at Tennessee. With Patrick Payton and Jack Pyburn gone, this group's floor is a stout run defense that ranked 9th in run-stuff rate, but Umanmielen is the swing piece who can turn a solid front into one that actually gets after the quarterback.
LSU loses the disruptive Harold Perkins Jr. and the physical West Weeks, a pair that combined for real havoc at the second level, and answers with a straight swap of production: TJ Dottery arrives with 98 tackles and 5.5 TFL to slot in alongside Davhon Keys, who racked up 89 tackles of his own. Whit Weeks returns too, but his modest 27 tackles and 3 TFL mean the real weight falls on Dottery to replicate what Perkins and West Weeks did behind the line. Keys and Dottery now carry a front seven that already ranked 9th in run-stuff rate, and if that duo tackles the way their box scores suggest, Lane Kiffin inherits a linebacker corps that should not miss a beat against the run.
Lane Kiffin gutted the safety room and rebuilt it with transfers, and Ty Benefield from Boise State is the headliner, arriving off a 105-tackle, 8.5-TFL season to replace the departed A.J. Haulcy's 88 tackles. Tamarcus Cooley (70 tackles) anchors alongside him while DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland return at corner with modest but functional numbers from a unit that ranked 32nd in yards per play allowed. The bet is that Benefield's production plus a four-star corner class led by Havon Finney Jr. pushes a secondary that finished 42nd in passing yards allowed past its 2025 floor rather than repeating it.
Lane Kiffin didn't wait to find out whether Aidan Corbello, Gavin Higgins or Sean Perret could replace Damian Ramos, who hit 24 of 29 field goals and 101 points last year. He went to the portal and got Scott Starzyk from Arkansas, who connected on 14 of 18 with a 53-yard long, giving LSU a proven veteran leg instead of an open competition. Grant Chadwick returns off a 45.2-yard average to anchor the punting game, while Florida transfer Hayden Craig gives Kiffin a second option there and Mack Mulhern arrives to handle snaps after Jonathan Ferguson's departure.
Lane Kiffin didn't inherit Garrett Nussmeier's offense, he blew it up, and the 41-for-41 portal swap is the whole story here. Sam Leavitt arrives from Arizona State to take over at quarterback outright, and Kiffin surrounded him with fresh weapons in Jackson Harris and Jayce Brown to replace the departed Zavion Thomas, Barion Brown and Aaron Anderson almost wholesale. With Ty Benefield and TJ Dottery imported to stabilize a defense that lost A.J. Haulcy and West Weeks, this LSU roster in 2026 is essentially Kiffin's team from scratch, not an extension of last year's 7-6 group.
Lane Kiffin brought his whole operation from Arizona State in the person of Sam Leavitt, and the fit matters more than the raw numbers he posted there. Leavitt's arrival lets Kiffin build around a passer who already knows his system, throwing to a group anchored by Tre' Brown and Trey'Dez Green, and how fast that chemistry clicks determines whether LSU's offense looks like a fresh start or another transition year.
Bettors kept laying points with LSU at home and lost anyway, covering just 29% as favorites there, while the road version of this team went 1-4 straight up as an underdog. That gap is the tell: a plus-7 turnover margin and a 3-4 mark in one-score games papered over a group that actually beat its in-conference yardage margin's implied win rate, the exact profile due to snap back. Lane Kiffin's first year brings a roster returning only 26% of its production, so fading LSU as the public's home chalk is the play until the number catches up to the talent.
