A defense that finished 32nd in scoring offense against the SEC's usual arms race and a roster ranked 7th nationally in talent mean Dabo Swinney has the pieces to outrun a 7-6 season, but it all rests on whether Christopher Vizzina can turn a talent floor into results an offense stuck at 72nd in scoring never found last fall.
Can Christopher Vizzina carry the Clemson offense for a full slate after inheriting a room that returns just 39.7% of its production? The most likely outcome is a slow build rather than an instant leap, since so much of the supporting cast around him is unproven and Vizzina himself is still establishing himself as the guy. Clemson's ceiling in the ACC rests on how fast he and that retooled offense sync up, not on any defensive question.
Clemson's 2026 slate turns on three coin-flip road trips and one home gauntlet game: a trip to LSU where the Tigers are underdogs at 28%, a home date with Miami they win less than half the time at 36%, and a trip to Florida State that projects as a true toss-up at 54%. Get through those three and the rest of the schedule, ranked 34th in difficulty, is forgiving, with Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Duke all favoring Clemson between 68% and 77%. Dabo Swinney's 8-4 projection with 96% bowl odds says this team should handle the middle of the schedule, but the LSU-Miami-Florida State stretch is where 2026 actually gets decided.

A 1-3 mark in one-score games masks what actually happened on the field, and the margin says Clemson caught the wrong side of close finishes more than it played poorly. In conference play, the yardage margin implied a 56.8% win rate against an actual 50.0%, another sign this group outplayed its 7-6 finish. Dabo Swinney's 19th year sets up as a bounce-back case built on nothing more than better luck in games Clemson was already built to win.
The rushing attack stalled at 124 yards a game, 106th nationally, which is exactly why Clemson's offense now belongs to Christopher Vizzina's arm. He threw for 406 yards, 4 touchdowns and just 1 interception in his look last season, and with the passing game already ranked 24th in yards per game, the projected starter inherits a unit built to throw first. The third-down offense finished 114th, so Vizzina's efficiency on money downs, not any ground game revival, will decide whether this offense climbs out of the middle of the pack in 2026.
Cade Klubnik's 2,943 yards walk out the door, and Christopher Vizzina, who threw for 406 yards and 4 touchdowns in his limited action, takes the first-team reps as camp opens. That is not a coronation. Tait Reynolds and Brock Bradley arrive as unproven three-star freshmen, and Chris Denson and Trent Pearman both have live snaps on tape, so Dabo Swinney has bodies to throw into the mix if Vizzina stalls. But an offense that finished 114th in third-down conversion rate a year ago needs its front-runner to hold the job outright, not split reps into November.
Adam Randall's 814 yards and 10 scores walk out the door, and nobody left on campus has proven he can replace that kind of production, Gideon Davidson managed just 260 yards a year ago and David Eziomume only 71. That vacuum is why Clemson went to the portal for Chris Johnson Jr., whose 479 yards and 4 touchdowns at SMU make him the presumptive lead back the moment he's on campus. The stakes are real given the run game already sat at 124 yards per game, 106th nationally, so Johnson isn't just competing for touches, he's the fix for a broken part of the offense.
T.J. Moore (52 catches, 837 yards) and Bryant Wesco Jr. (31 catches, 6 TD) form a legitimate top two, which matters because Clemson's passing game ranked 24th nationally in yards per game while the run game stalled at 106th in rushing yards per game. The bigger question is depth behind them now that Antonio Williams and his 55 catches are gone, leaving Tyler Brown, Tristan Smith and Cole Turner to prove last season's modest numbers were about opportunity, not ceiling. Four-star signees Naeem Burroughs and Gordon Sellars III arrive with no snaps logged yet, but this offense already leans heavily on the pass, and its third-down rate of 34.3% (114th) means Moore and Wesco have to turn targets into money-down conversions immediately.
Clemson loses none of its meaningful tight end production, and that's the whole story here. Josh Sapp's 11 catches walk out the door, but Christian Bentancur's 20 grabs for 215 yards and 3 scores return as the clear centerpiece, with Olsen Patt-Henry's 16 catches giving the room a second reliable target. A passing game that already ranked 24th nationally in yardage has its top two tight end producers back intact, and with Charlie Johnson and Jack Wolf adding fresh bodies behind them, this is a position group built to grow rather than replace what it lost.
Clemson's ground game stalled at 124 yards per game (106th) behind a line that allowed 21 sacks, and the fix leans on continuity more than reinforcement. Seniors Collin Sadler and Carlito Jones anchor a group that brings back the bulk of the room even as Blake Miller and three other regulars departed, while four-star signees Chance Barclay, Leo Delaney, Grant Wise and Carter Scruggs add interior depth for down the road rather than immediate answers. With Dabo Swinney's passing game already humming at 268 yards per game, the bigger question is whether this retooled front can finally push a stagnant run game off 106th nationally.
Losing Peter Woods and T.J. Parker off a line that produced 34 sacks and finished 9th nationally in havoc rate is real production to replace, and Clemson didn't chase blue-chip fixes to do it, adding three-star depth pieces like London Merritt and Devarrick Woods rather than a portal headliner. Will Heldt (6 sacks, 14.5 TFL) and Jahiem Lawson (4 sacks, 6.5 TFL) are the proven edge pair carrying the group, but the interior behind Vic Burley and Champ Thompson is thin on returning stats and now leans on newcomers like Markus Strong to hold up. This unit stopped the run at a top-20 rate a year ago; whether that survives the interior turnover, not the pass defense that ranked 121st, decides how far this defense actually improves.
Sammy Brown's 107 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 14 TFL make him the rare centerpiece who can anchor a front by himself, and Clemson needs exactly that with Wade Woodaz and his 70 tackles gone. Jeremiah Alexander and Kobe McCloud return with modest snaps behind him, and four-star St. Xavier signee Brayden Reilly arrives to add depth rather than an immediate answer. The run defense held up at 16th in rushing yards allowed, but the pass defense sank to 121st, and that gap is squarely where this linebacker group has to make its impact felt in coverage, not just against the run.
Clemson stopped the run well enough in 2025 (106 yards allowed, 16th nationally) but the secondary bled through the air, finishing 121st in passing yards allowed at 252 per game, and the corner responsible for the most tackles among departures, Avieon Terrell, is gone. Ashton Hampton comes back as the proven cover corner with 45 tackles and 3 TFL, but Corey Myrick arrives from Southern Miss with 91 tackles and 4.5 TFL, giving Dabo Swinney an instant-impact safety to pair with returner Ronan Hanafin. Penn State transfer Elliot Washington II adds a tested body at cornerback, and how quickly he and Myrick settle in will decide whether that 121st-ranked pass defense actually improves or just reshuffles the same problem.
Clemson isn't replacing anything of substance in the kicking game, it's just deciding between two guys who already have the job. Nolan Hauser made 17 of 21 field goals with a long of 50 and piled up 89 points, which should make him the incumbent, but Charlie Reed is also back in the mix at placekicker with no track record yet to lean on. Jack Smith returns after a 50-punt, 41.5-yard season, so the only real unknown here is a battle nobody outside the program can settle from the stat sheet, not a unit searching for answers.
Cade Klubnik's departure leaves Clemson turning the offense over to Christopher Vizzina, who threw for just 406 yards a season ago but is projected to open 2026 as the starter after sitting behind him. The bigger issue is defensive depth: T.J. Parker's 5 sacks, Wade Woodaz's 70 tackles and a pair of departed safeties in Khalil Barnes and Ricardo Jones gut a unit that now leans on transfers London Merritt and Corey Myrick to replace lost production immediately. A 20th-ranked class and 11 portal arrivals patch holes, but this roster is rebuilding trust in new faces at exactly the spots that decided close games in 2025.
Cade Klubnik's 2943 yards through the air walk out the door, leaving Christopher Vizzina, who has thrown for just 406 yards, 4 TD and 1 INT, as the projected answer at quarterback. He inherits a real weapon in T.J. Moore, who caught 52 balls for 837 yards, and Bryant Wesco Jr., who turned 31 catches into 6 touchdowns, so the pieces are there if Vizzina proves he can run the offense on a bigger sample than last year's brief look.
The story for Clemson bettors was not the 7-6 finish, it was where the losses came against the number. As a home favorite, Clemson covered just 1-6, and its overall home mark of 1-6 against the spread dragged down an otherwise sharp road profile. On the road, Clemson went 4-1 straight up and covered at an 80% clip, including a perfect 2-0 as a road underdog, meaning the smart 2026 money treats Dabo Swinney's team as live only once it leaves home, and skeptical every time the line makes it a favorite in its own building.
