Rich Rodriguez is asking a roster that returns just 18% of its production to fix scoring and stopping units that finished 110th and 114th nationally a year ago, a talent base ranked 63rd nationally that has to jell fast if a rating of 66th entering 2026 is going to hold up.
Can Michael Hawkins Jr. run this offense behind a group that returns almost nobody up front or at receiver? With just 25.4% of offensive production back and Cam Vaughn's 35 catches and 540 yards gone, Hawkins will be throwing to unproven targets and relying on protection that hasn't played meaningful snaps together. The most likely outcome is a rough transition season for the passing game, since a new quarterback rarely outruns that much lost continuity around him in year one.
Rich Rodriguez opens year two with a schedule that offers almost nothing in the middle, a stack of near-even coin flips against Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Kansas and Houston that could tip either way, sandwiched around three legitimate gauntlet trips: at Texas Tech, at Utah and at TCU. Those three road games, where West Virginia is projected as an underdog in each, will decide whether the 46% bowl odds and 5-7 projection hold or collapse. The neutral-site opener against Virginia is its own toss-up test before conference play even starts, meaning this team could be sitting at 1-1 or 0-2 before the Big 12 grind begins in earnest.

A 4-8 finish with a 2-7 mark in league play is a rough follow-up to Rich Rodriguez's return to Morgantown, and the conference record shows just how far West Virginia sits from Big 12 contention. But year two is still early in any rebuild, and the record does not erase the fact that Rodriguez knows this program and this league better than most first-time hires would. The bigger question for 2026 is whether the on-field product actually looks different, not whether the record alone justifies patience.
West Virginia's offense was the real problem in 2025, ranking 134th on third downs and 121st in yards per play, so Rich Rodriguez went to the portal for his answer at quarterback rather than hoping for internal growth. Michael Hawkins Jr. arrives from Oklahoma to run the offense, and his ceiling matters more than his modest 167 yards and 3 touchdowns suggest, since he's replacing a unit that averaged just 21.8 points a game. The defense already has its identity built around havoc, ranking 34th in tackles for loss and 18th in run-stuff rate, so 2026 comes down to whether Hawkins can turn all those short fields into points the 2025 offense routinely wasted.
Michael Hawkins Jr. transfers in to take the job outright, and the move signals Rich Rodriguez wants more juice than a passing game that finished 103rd in yards per game and 134th on third downs. Scotty Fox Jr. threw for 1,276 yards but also six interceptions, and Nicco Marchiol's 720 yards are gone too, so Hawkins inherits a clean slate rather than a timeshare. He arrives with only 167 yards and three touchdowns on his résumé, but that clean 3-0 touchdown-to-interception mark is exactly the kind of ball security this offense needs after ranking 121st in success rate.
West Virginia didn't just tweak the backfield, it rebuilt it wholesale, moving on from Jaylan Knighton, Diore Hubbard, Cyncir Bowers, Clay Ash and Jahiem White and handing the room to Cam Cook, who rushed for 1666 yards and 16 touchdowns at Jacksonville State. That workload arrives behind an offense that ranked 121st nationally in success rate and 134th on third down, so Cook is less a complement than the whole rushing plan, with four-star Sandy Creek signee Amari Latimer added as insurance depth. Martavious Boswell and Andre Devine return without a stat line between them, which only sharpens the point that Rich Rodriguez is betting his ground game on a portal back rather than internal continuity.
Rich Rodriguez didn't just tweak the receiver room, he replaced almost the entire two-deep. Cam Vaughn, Jeff Weimer and Rodney Gallagher III are gone from a passing game that ranked 103rd in yards per game, and the fix is imported production: DJ Epps caught 46 balls for 498 yards and 5 touchdowns at Troy in 2025, John Neider added 27 catches for 422 yards and 2 scores at UConn, and both now line up alongside Jaden Bray, whose 7 catches last year barely hint at his role in a retooled offense. With 14 receivers out the door and only Bray carrying meaningful returning stats, this group's identity in 2026 belongs to the transfer additions, not the holdovers.
Grayson Barnes and his 21 catches are gone, and West Virginia rebuilt the room almost entirely through the portal, headlined by Josh Sapp, who arrives from Clemson with 11 catches and 150 yards already on his résumé. Ryan Ward returns with modest production (6 catches, 41 yards, 1 TD), but the bulk of this group is Sapp plus a wave of unproven newcomers in Kade Bush, Sam Hamilton, Xavier Anderson and Aidan Woods. On an offense that ranked 103rd in passing yards per game a year ago, Sapp's real production gives Rich Rodriguez a tight end who can actually be trusted to catch a football.
A line that allowed 29 sacks and posted a 36.8% success rate is getting almost entirely rebuilt, with 15 departures against just nine returning bodies. Cam Griffin, Landen Livingston and Malik Agbo are the senior holdovers Rich Rodriguez has to lean on up front, but the reinforcements are coming straight out of high school this cycle, headlined by four-star tackle Kevin Brown and fellow signee Jonas Muya, alongside portal additions Lamarcus Dillard, Carsten Casady and Devin Vass. With that much August turnover on the interior and edges alike, West Virginia's blocking is more likely to trade its 2025 identity for a slower, more physical build than to fix last year's 4.94 yards per play in one jump.
Zeke Durham-Campbell's 7.5 TFL and 5.5 sacks were the one bright spot on a line that still let opponents stay on schedule and gave up 265 passing yards per game, 129th nationally. Eleven linemen are out the door, including Edward Vesterinen and Devin Grant, so Rich Rodriguez went to the portal for Harper Holloman (Western Kentucky, 5.5 TFL) and David Afogho (Bowling Green, 4 TFL) to pair with Durham-Campbell on the edge. The Big 12 arrival of Tobi Haastrup from Oregon adds another body, but with Nate Gabriel and Corey McIntyre Jr. the only other returners carrying any real tackle numbers, this front's pass rush production has to come almost entirely from the newcomers in 2026.
Reid Carrico and his 69 tackles are gone, along with Chase Wilson and Ben Bogle, gutting the group that helped West Virginia rack up 80 tackles for loss a year ago. Rich Rodriguez answered by importing bulk production instead of promise, landing Tyler Stolsky (86 tackles at Florida Atlantic), Isaiah Patterson (46 at UNLV) and Malachi Hood (44 at Illinois) to flank returning tackler Ben Cutter. That trio arrives with proven snaps against a defense that finished 129th in passing yards allowed, and the pass-coverage numbers, not raw tackle counts, will decide whether this unit actually improves.
West Virginia's pass defense was a sieve last season, giving up 265 yards a game through the air (129th), and the group tasked with fixing it looks almost entirely different. Jaire Rawlison, who racked up 52 tackles at corner, is the lone proven piece left standing after 21 defensive backs cleared out, including both starting safeties in Fred Perry and Darrian Lewis. Rich Rodriguez went to the portal for answers, landing Memphis safety Kamari Wilson, who had 78 tackles and 6.5 TFL last year, plus UNLV corner Andrew Powdrell, and that pair needs to hit immediately given how thin the returning depth chart is behind Rawlison.
Kade Hensley took his 10-of-12 season and 61 points out the door, so West Virginia went shopping rather than hand the job to an incumbent. Bryan Hansen arrives from Colorado State having punted 57 times for a 47.9 average, a clear upgrade path after Oliver Straw's 42.5 mark, while Jack Cassidy comes in from Western Kentucky having hit both his field-goal tries with a 55-yard long and Peter Notaro adds competition after kicking for Alabama. With Macguire Moss and Kaden Seller back to snap and no returning numbers behind Nate Flower, the entire scoring and field-position operation now runs through the newcomers.
Rich Rodriguez blew up the roster again, sending out 50 players while hauling in 34, and the offense gets rebuilt around Michael Hawkins Jr., who takes over at quarterback after throwing for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns without an interception at Oklahoma. Cam Cook arrives from Jacksonville State to replace the departed Diore Hubbard and Cyncir Bowers after piling up 1666 rushing yards, and DJ Epps and John Neider come in from Troy and UConn to fill the void left by Cam Vaughn and Jeff Weimer. Defensively the Mountaineers replace linebacker Reid Carrico and safety Fred Perry with a wave of transfers in Tyler Stolsky, Kamari Wilson and Isaiah Patterson, betting that fresh volume beats continuity after a 4-8 finish.
West Virginia handed Michael Hawkins Jr. the keys after his Oklahoma stint, but the offense that actually turns the corner in 2026 runs through Cam Cook. He arrives from Jacksonville State off a 1,666-yard, 16-touchdown season, and if he replicates anything close to that pace behind a Big 12 line, he takes pressure off Hawkins Jr. to replace Cam Vaughn's departed production through the air. If Cook does not hit, this offense leans entirely on an unproven Hawkins Jr. and a rebuilding receiver room.
West Virginia went 4-8 on the field but 7-5 against the number, and that split tells the real story of Rich Rodriguez's first year. Bettors trusted the Mountaineers as home favorites (2-0) and as road underdogs (3-2), the two spots where the market had modest expectations they could clear. The bigger red flag hides in the split by location, a 3-3 straight up mark at home against just 1-5 on the road, meaning the only true confidence in this program right now is inside Morgantown.
