Malachi Singleton takes over an offense that has to be rebuilt from scratch, with the roster talent (79th nationally) far outpacing last year's 5-8 finish and just 21% returning production meaning his transfer arm has to carry a nearly blank slate immediately.
Does App State have enough carryover talent to survive rebuilding nearly its entire two-deep around Malachi Singleton? With offensive returning production sitting at 15.8% and the defense not far behind at 25.3%, Dowell Loggains is essentially fielding a new roster in year two, and Rashod Dubinion's 868 rushing yards walk out the door with almost nobody left to replace him. The answer leans rough early: Singleton gives the offense a real identity at quarterback, but this thin a carryover group typically means growing pains before it means contention in the Sun Belt.
App State drew one of the easiest schedules in the country, ranked 121st in difficulty, yet the projection still lands at 6-6 because Dowell Loggains' group has almost no real margin against anyone decent. The trip to NC State is a lost cause on paper at 16%, but the season actually turns on East Carolina on the road and a home date with James Madison, both true toss-ups the Mountaineers need to win to get bowl-eligible. Everything else, from Maine and UL Monroe to Georgia State, should be handled, which means the difference between another losing year and a bowl bid comes down to those few competitive games, not the cupcakes padding the ledger.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
A 5-8 record hid an offense that was inefficient, not incapable, needing 15.9 yards per point against league opponents while a -3 turnover margin and a conference yardage margin that outran the win total both point the same direction: this team was better than it played. Malachi Singleton now runs the offense, and if the ball bounces closer to neutral in 2026, the 6-6 projection looks like the baseline rather than a stretch. With schedule difficulty ranked 121st, the path to that number is soft enough that 6-6 should be treated as the floor, not the ceiling, for Dowell Loggains' second year.
The 5-8 mark and a 109th power rating make Dowell Loggains look stuck, but the underlying numbers argue this roster was better than its record. App State's conference-game yardage margin against league opponents implied a much stronger winning rate than the team actually posted, and a -3 turnover margin over 13 games points to bad luck rather than bad football. Year two for Loggains arrives with the case that 2025 undersold this group, and positive regression in the close margins is the storyline to watch in 2026.
Malachi Singleton arrives from Purdue to run an offense that finished 91st in points per game and dead in the water on third downs at a 32.8% conversion rate, so his arm has to fix what App State's ground game couldn't. The passing attack was already the bright spot at 34th nationally, and Singleton inherits that infrastructure rather than building it from scratch. The bigger issue is defensive, where a unit allowing 268 passing yards per game gave Sun Belt quarterbacks the same freedom Singleton now hopes to exploit himself.
App State cleared out its entire quarterback room from a year ago, and the answer arrived via the portal in Malachi Singleton, who steps in as the starter after throwing for 439 yards and 5 touchdowns at Purdue. That's a clean break from 2025, when JJ Kohl and AJ Swann combined to throw eight interceptions and the offense stalled at a 32.8% third-down rate, 123rd nationally. Singleton inherits a passing attack that was actually productive by yardage (257 yards per game, 34th) but leaky on money downs, and fixing that conversion rate more than any raw stat line will decide whether this offense climbs out of the bottom third nationally in scoring.
Rashod Dubinion's 868 yards walk out the door with no heir apparent already established, since Jaquari Lewis is the only proven back left after posting 618 yards and 6 touchdowns in a complementary role last season. App State went out and added bulk rather than trust a thin room, landing four-star Florida transfer Treyaun Webb along with J'Marion Burnette and Ja'Quez Cross, neither of whom carried a real workload at their old stops. With a rushing attack that finished 102nd in yards per game, the room's ceiling now rides on whether Webb can be the every-down back this offense never had.
App State basically rebuilt this room through the portal after Dalton Stroman, Jaden Barnes and Davion Dozier all walked out the door with their production. Chris Lofton arrives from Gardner-Webb with 55 catches and 917 yards, and Sam Pickett III adds 33 catches and 450 yards from Samford, giving Dowell Loggains two proven outside targets to plug into an offense that ranked 34th in passing yards per game but stalled at a 32.8% third-down rate. Sam Mbake's 24 catches are the top returning mark on this list, which means the passing game's ceiling now runs through the transfers, not the holdovers.
App State cleared out its entire tight end production, with Izayah Cummings, David Larkins and Kanen Hamlett all gone, and turned to the portal to replace it rather than lean on Dillon Galloway's 2 catches. Darrin Fugitt arrives from Lindenwood with 32 catches for 341 yards and 2 touchdowns, giving the room its only proven pass-catcher, while Luke Douglas comes over from Florida State as an unproven but power-conference add. With a passing game that ranked 34th nationally in yards per game last season, Fugitt slotting in as the every-down target is the difference between the position group stalling out and actually contributing.
Sacks allowed 28 times and stalled behind a run game that managed just 128 yards per game (102nd), App State's front five gave quarterbacks little room to work last fall. Ten linemen are out the door, so whatever continuity existed is gone, but Dowell Loggains kept Tyriq Poindexter, Jake Ganoe and Trent Ramsey in the building and stacked the room with three-star tackles Caden Muskus, Nick Kashubara and Devon Manuel plus interior additions Scottland Dover and Jarvis Potts. With more bodies leaving than coming back, this is a rebuilt unit banking on those newcomers to win jobs fast rather than a group returning intact.
Aiden Benton (4.5 sacks, 5 TFL) and Caleb Sandstrom (3.5 sacks, 4 TFL) anchor a line that generated 29 sacks and 75 tackles for loss a year ago, but the pass defense allowing 268 yards per game (130th) shows those pressures weren't finishing plays. Kevin Abrams-Verwayne's 43 tackles and 5 sacks are gone, and App State is betting on a recruiting wave to replace that snap, signing four-star edge Jordan Harris out of Maumelle plus Manny Lewis, Sawyer Arnold and Christian Waring as true freshmen, while East Tennessee State transfer Ki'Shawn Harvey adds another body up front. It's a youth-and-hope rebuild for Dowell Loggains up front, with Benton and Sandstrom needing to hold the line while the new blood learns fast enough to fix a run defense that still ranked 87th in run-stuff rate.
Colton Phares (101 tackles, 9.5 TFL) anchors this group again, but everyone flanking him is either unproven or brand new, and that's the real story after App State shed Kyle Arnholt, Brayshawn Littlejohn and Jaelin Willis from a defense that ranked 130th in pass yards allowed per game. Dowell Loggains leaned on the portal to patch it, bringing in Old Dominion's Keshawn Thomas (37 tackles, 3 sacks) and Middle Tennessee's Alex Mitchell to start immediately alongside Phares, while Cole Becker, Randy Marion III and Braxton Veiga carry no track record into real snaps. With that little proven depth behind one workhorse, the pass defense numbers don't improve unless Thomas and Mitchell hit the ground running.
App State's pass defense bled 268 yards a game a year ago, 130th nationally, and the answer wasn't retention, it was a full remodel at the back end. Zyeir Gamble and Ethan Johnson, who combined for real tackle production, are both gone, leaving Cam Fleming and Ja'Den McBurrows as the returning pieces with actual snaps on their resume. The Sun Belt overhaul brings in Charlotte transfer Cary Grant, who logged 45 tackles and 2.5 TFL last year, and Dayton corner Josh Williams, who allowed 585 yards on 44 catches in his last stop, both projected to start immediately rather than develop behind anyone.
App State's kicking game is a near-total teardown, and the numbers that mattered last year walked out the door with Dominic De Freitas (20 of 26 field goals, 91 points) and Ian Ratliff (43.8 yards per punt). None of the returning names, Carter Everett, Jackson Moore or Mitchell Lake, carry a single logged statistic, so Dowell Loggains went to the portal for competition, adding James London from Murray State and Jaxson Dunn from Arkansas State. With Parker Stone also arriving from Tulsa to challenge incumbent long snapper Gabriel Simpkins, this unit's 2026 production is essentially a blank page waiting on unproven legs.
App State turned over its entire passing offense, letting JJ Kohl and AJ Swann walk after they combined for real production, and handing the keys to Purdue transfer Malachi Singleton, who is the projected starter after throwing for 439 yards and 5 touchdowns in limited action last season. He inherits a retooled receiver room built around Gardner-Webb transfer Chris Lofton, who caught 55 passes for 917 yards, plus Samford's Sam Pickett III, replacing the departed production of Dalton Stroman and Jaden Barnes. The bigger story is buried in the conference numbers: App State's league-play yardage margin implied a much better record than 2-6, and with an offense that wasted yardage without scoring and a defense that got scored on too cheaply, both point to a team whose bounce is due in 2026, not a repeat 5-8.
A 5-8 mark hid real progress here, since App State's yardage against league foes actually pointed to a better team than the record showed, and the offense's problem wasn't moving the ball but finishing drives, needing 15.9 yards per point scored against a 14.1 median. That falls on Malachi Singleton now, and pairing him with Jaquari Lewis (618 yards, 6 TD) and Sam Mbake gives him more finishing weapons than Rashod Dubinion's departure might suggest. If Singleton turns those long fields into touchdowns instead of stalled drives, the record catches up to the underlying performance fast.
Vegas basically had App State pegged right last year, a 6-7 cover mark that mirrors the 5-8 finish under Dowell Loggains, and the split tells the real story: home favorites went 1-3 against the number, meaning the market kept overrating Mountaineer teams expected to win. Road trips were worse straight up, 1-4, even though the spread numbers there were closer, so the fix for 2026 is winning the games books expect them to win rather than chasing value as an underdog. Conference play landing at 4-4 against the spread despite a 2-6 record on the field suggests Loggains' group is competitive enough to keep games tight in Sun Belt play, which is a sturdier foundation than the box score alone shows.
