Big 12 2026 Season Preview

Tech's Race to Lose

Texas Tech sits alone at the top, projected to 11-1 and No. 10 nationally, a tier above everyone else in this league. BYU is the clearest chaser at No. 20, but the gap from there to Utah, Arizona, Houston, Baylor, TCU and Kansas State is thin, with all five bunched between No. 31 and No. 41 and only a game separating their projected records. That crowd makes the middle of the standings a genuine scramble, but the top of the league is not up for debate, with Texas Tech projected to face BYU for the title.

Cowboys Lead the Pack

Oklahoma State tops the Big 12 preseason all-conference team, placing quarterback Drew Mestemaker, running back Caleb Hawkins, receiver Wyatt Young and linebacker Ethan Wesloski on the first team. Texas Tech answers with a defensive front loaded up front in Adam Trick and Trey White plus skill talent in Jalen Jones and Terrance Carter Jr., while TCU is the only program to land a pair of safeties in Jacob Fields and Jamel Johnson. Colorado also shows up on both sides through Danny Scudero, Gideon Lampron and Naeten Mitchell, and with West Virginia, Kansas State, Iowa State, Arizona State and BYU each still landing a first-teamer, the picks spread across nine different programs rather than clustering around one or two powers.

One Roster, Three Rooms

Oklahoma State claims 3 of the conference's 7 top returning-production rooms, with quarterback Drew Mestemaker, running back Caleb Hawkins and receiver Wyatt Young all back to anchor the same offense. That kind of concentrated continuity is rare in this league, where most of the remaining top spots are scattered across different programs. Texas Tech splits the difference, pairing tight end Terrance Carter Jr. with defensive lineman Adam Trick to show up on both sides of the ball. Arizona and TCU round things out with single standout units, linebacker Taye Brown and defensive back Jacob Fields, proof the league's best position rooms are spread far beyond just one contender.
