Jon Sumrall takes over a roster that ranks 12th nationally in talent yet finished 4-8 and 111th in scoring offense, and that gap between pedigree and production is the entire bet on 2026.
Can Aaron Philo hold down the job with almost no offensive continuity around him? Florida returns just 38.5% of its offensive production, meaning the skill talent, protection and playcalling Philo leans on are largely unproven under a first-year staff led by Jon Sumrall. That thin margin, more than Philo's own limited track record, is the bigger threat to a functional 2026 offense.
Jon Sumrall's first Florida team gets its verdict written in three games: a trip to Texas (16% win), a neutral-site clash with Georgia (24%), and a home date with Oklahoma (46%). Everything else on the slate, from Florida Atlantic and Campbell at home to a manageable November closing with Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State, sets up as winnable, which is how a team coming off 4-8 lands a 6th-ranked schedule difficulty and still projects to 7-5. Split the coin-flip games against Auburn, Ole Miss and Missouri and the bowl math writes itself, but Sumrall's debut season really gets defined by how the Gators hold up against the three heavyweights.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Jon Sumrall inherits a team whose league-play yardage margin against SEC-slated opponents pointed to a considerably better outcome than 2-6, which means the four-win season is a false floor rather than a true read on this roster. None of the underlying markers, from turnover margin to close-game results, point to a team that got lucky in the ways that get punished the next year; if anything the yardage gap says regression should run upward. A power ranking of 18th sitting next to a losing record is the clearest sign here, Sumrall's first Florida team was closer to competitive than its bowl-less finish suggested.
Florida's offense was not just inefficient in 2025, it was allergic to big plays, ranking 130th nationally in explosiveness even while finishing a respectable 41st in points per scoring chance. Jon Sumrall inherits that ceiling problem and hands the keys to Aaron Philo, the Georgia Tech transfer whose 373 yards and single touchdown last season give little indication of how he fixes a passing attack that ranked 93rd in yards per play. The defense has more to work with, sitting 61st in points allowed, but until Philo or this staff manufactures explosive plays, Florida's offense stays capped below where its recruiting profile says it should be.
DJ Lagway's 2264 yards and 14 interceptions are gone, and Jon Sumrall is handing the offense to Aaron Philo, a Georgia Tech transfer who threw for 373 yards with a 1-1 TD-to-INT mark in limited action. That is not much of an on-field track record, but it fits an offense that ranked 130th in explosiveness and converted just 34.4% of third downs a year ago, a unit starving for cleaner decision-making over splash plays. Tramell Jones Jr. (191 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT) returns as insurance, but Philo is the answer Sumrall imported to fix a passing game that finished 93rd nationally in yards per attempt.
Jadan Baugh's 1170 yards were nearly the only thing that worked in a Florida offense that ranked 130th in explosiveness, and Jon Sumrall didn't leave that unit alone this offseason. London Montgomery arrives from East Carolina off a 742-yard season and Evan Pryor joins from Cincinnati after gaining 522, giving Baugh real complementary punch behind him instead of the thin depth of Duke Clark and Anthony Rubio that got exposed last year. With Baugh anchoring early-down work and Montgomery and Pryor pushing the tempo, the ground game should be the part of this offense that doesn't need fixing while Sumrall sorts out everything else.
Jon Sumrall didn't just add pieces, he imported a proven target in Eric Singleton Jr., who caught 58 balls for 534 yards at Auburn and instantly becomes the most productive receiver on this roster. Vernell Brown III's 40 catches give Sumrall a reliable second option, while Dallas Wilson's 3 touchdowns on just 12 grabs hint at big-play upside if his workload grows. The bigger question is whether that talent can fix an offense that ranked 130th in explosiveness and 113th on third downs in 2025, since the passing attack needs Singleton and Brown to create the explosive plays this group simply didn't generate last year.
Jon Sumrall wipes out the entire tight end room's production, and the fix comes almost entirely through the portal. Hayden Hansen (30 catches, 254 yards) and Tony Livingston (11 catches, 119 yards, 2 TD) are both gone, leaving Scott Isacks and Micah Jones with no game production to point to. Luke Harpring, in from Georgia Tech with 13 catches for 158 yards, is the closest thing to a proven target and figures to be the early answer in an offense that ranked 130th nationally in explosiveness and needs easy answers over the middle.
Jake Slaughter's departure gutted the interior of a line that already allowed 20 sacks and posted explosiveness numbers ranked 130th nationally, and Jon Sumrall is rebuilding this room almost from scratch behind him, Damieon George Jr. and Hayden Clem also gone. The returning pieces skew young, with Bryce Lovett, Caden Jones and Roderick Kearney all sophomores and Knijeah Harris the closest thing to a senior presence, none with a proven track record yet. Sumrall answered with a heavy influx up front, signing four-star tackle Tyler Chukuyem and interior recruits G'Nivre Carr, Desmond Green and TJ Shanahan Jr. out of high school, plus tackle Chancellor Campbell, a group that will need to grow up fast if Florida is going to move off a 341-yard, 21.6-point offense.
Kamran James and Brendan Bett are the only holdovers with real production, and last year's line still finished 100th in tackles for loss and 98th in havoc rate under Jon Sumrall's predecessor's staff. That gap between name recognition and disruption is why the portal and recruiting hauls matter so much: Emmanuel Oyebadejo arrives from Jacksonville State with 41 tackles and 6.5 TFL, while blue-chip signees KJ Ford, JaReylan McCoy, Kendall Guervil and Malik Morris give Sumrall size and speed the departed group of Tyreak Sapp, George Gumbs Jr. and Jayden Woods never quite provided. James and Bett anchor the interior while Oyebadejo's proven pass-rush juice and the freshman class try to push this front off the bottom third of the country in yards per play allowed.
Myles Graham anchors this group with 76 tackles and 7 TFL, and the bulk of the production around him returns too, with Jaden Robinson (51 tackles, 4 TFL) and Aaron Chiles (52 tackles) both back. That continuity did not translate to disruption last season, with Florida sitting 100th in tackles for loss and 98th in havoc rate, and UCF transfer TJ Bullard arrives with modest 2-tackle, 0.5-TFL production rather than a proven fix. Jon Sumrall inherits linebackers who tackle in bunches but rarely wreck a play, and unless Graham or Robinson takes a real leap, 2026 looks like more of the same against the run, where Florida ranked 77th.
Bryce Thornton's 56 tackles anchor a secondary that gave up 223 passing yards per game and ranked 98th in havoc rate a year ago, and Jon Sumrall leaned on the portal to fix it rather than the trenches. DJ Coleman arrives from Baylor off a 41-tackle season and Cam Dooley joins from Kentucky after 29 tackles, both projected to start at safety alongside Alfonzo Allen Jr. and Cormani McClain, while four-star signees CJ Bronaugh, Dylan Purter and Kaiden Hall add long-term depth without any snaps banked yet. With Jordan Castell and Sharif Denson gone among nine total departures, the back end is younger and more talented on paper than the unit that finished 85th in yards per play allowed, but it is still an open question whether Coleman and Dooley can tighten a group that let opponents stay on schedule at a 90th-ranked clip.
Jon Sumrall raided his old Tulane operation to remake this unit rather than trust the incumbents, and it shows. Patrick Durkin arrives having made 24 of 27 field goals with a 52-yard long, a clear upgrade on departed Trey Smack's 18 of 22 mark, and punter Alec Clark's 46.5-yard average tops what Tommy Doman put up before leaving. With Durkin and Clark now the presumed favorites over holdovers Brandon Rabasco and Nicholas Inglis, and Washington transfer Hunter Solwold added at long snapper, Florida's specialists project as an upgrade even before the rest of the roster sorts itself out.
DJ Lagway's 2264 yards and the receiving corps of J. Michael Sturdivant, Eugene Wilson III and Aidan Mizell are all gone, and Jon Sumrall has answered by importing his own offense almost wholesale. Aaron Philo, who threw for 373 yards at Georgia Tech, takes over as the 2026 starter behind a backfield of London Montgomery (742 yards, 7 TD at East Carolina) and Evan Pryor, throwing to Eric Singleton Jr., who caught 58 balls for 534 yards at Auburn. With 27 transfers in and a No. 17 recruiting class layered on top, this is Sumrall's roster now, built to run through Philo and Singleton rather than lean on what Florida lost.
Florida's whole 2026 case rests on Aaron Philo, who takes over after DJ Lagway's 2,264-yard, 14-interception season and steps into an offense that in 2025 needed 15.8 yards per point against league opponents, well worse than the median, and left scores on the field. Jadan Baugh's 1,170 rushing yards and Eric Singleton Jr.'s move from Auburn give Philo a run game and a target to lean on, but the four-win record undersold a team whose conference yardage margin beat its actual win rate, so a more efficient Philo alone could turn last year's near-misses into wins. If Philo cleans up the red-zone and third-down inefficiency, Jon Sumrall's first season looks a lot better than 4-8.
Florida's betting card tells a home-versus-away split story that outlines the job Jon Sumrall inherits: a 3-3 cover mark and 4-2 record at home against an 0-5 straight-up wipeout on the road, where the Gators covered just once in five tries. Books stopped trusting this roster in road spots specifically, not just as a general letdown, and as a 1-6 straight-up mark against ranked teams shows, the gap widens fast against quality. A new staff installing its own systems in year one gives sharp money no reason to trust road numbers until Sumrall actually fixes what collapsed away from home.
