Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3ACC · Pat Narduzzi, year 12 · 8-5 last season · No. 36 in our FBS ratings
Mason Heintschel takes full command of an offense that already scored 33.7 points a game, and if Pittsburgh's defense can climb out of the 69th-ranked scoring tier that undercut a talent floor good enough for No. 36 in the power ratings, this looks like the season the Panthers stop overachieving and just win.
Does Mason Heintschel have enough around him to keep pace on his own? Pittsburgh returns under half its production on both sides of the ball, so the burden falls on Heintschel to elevate a supporting cast still finding its footing rather than simply manage what worked last year. Expect growing pains early, but Heintschel's grip on the job all offseason should let Pittsburgh's passing attack stay ahead of the roster turnover around it.
Pittsburgh's projected 7-5 mark rides almost entirely on three road trips: a 13 percent shot at Miami, a coin-flip-tilted 37 percent at Louisville, and a 42 percent shot at Virginia Tech, the games that will decide whether Pat Narduzzi's twelfth season matches last year's 8-5 finish or slips behind it. Home dates with Florida State (49 percent) and North Carolina (60 percent) add more uncertainty than the schedule rank of 55 suggests, so the Panthers need at least one of those road upsets to keep the bowl math comfortable rather than a scramble.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Twelve years in, Pat Narduzzi keeps producing the same result: a Pitt team that wins its share of league games and finishes with a winning record, and 2025 was no exception at 8-5 with a 6-2 mark in ACC play. The program's No. 36 power ranking backs up what the record shows, a roster that plays disciplined, competitive football within the conference. There is no volatility here, just a coach whose long tenure has bought a consistent, if unspectacular, level of production year after year.
Pittsburgh's offense is a study in contradictions: 10th nationally in explosiveness per successful play, yet 132nd in sacks allowed and 120th on third down, a line that couldn't protect or sustain drives even as it produced chunk plays. Mason Heintschel returns after throwing for 2,357 yards and 16 touchdowns, and his 2026 ceiling depends entirely on whether that offensive line cuts down the pressure that piled up behind him. The defense is the steadier identity here, top-10 in tackles for loss and run-stuff rate, which means this team's 2026 arc still gets written by the same question it never solved a year ago: protecting the quarterback long enough to cash in those explosive throws.
Eli Holstein is gone, and Pittsburgh hands the offense outright to Mason Heintschel, who already threw for 2357 yards, 16 touchdowns and 8 picks last season while sharing snaps. That full-time control matters most behind a line that allowed 44 sacks, a number that undercut an offense explosive enough to rank 10th nationally in points per successful play. Corey Dailey arrives as a four-star developmental piece, but 2026 is Heintschel's job to run, and whether Pittsburgh's big plays turn into more points comes down to whether he gets time to make them.
Pitt's ground game was its glaring weak spot in a run-heavy sport, finishing 116th in rushing yards per game even with Ethan Shine (767 yards, 5 TD) and Ja'Kyrian Turner (747 yards, 7 TD) both back. Adding LaVell Wright from Western Kentucky, who ran for 471 yards and 10 touchdowns, gives Pat Narduzzi a proven short-yardage scorer to pair with that returning duo rather than leaning on unproven depth like Jaylin Brown and Synkwan Smith. Desmond Reid's departure strips out a receiving element out of the backfield, so Justin Cook's 44 catches worth of experience matters more if this line still allows sacks at the rate it did in 2025.
Pittsburgh's passing game loses the bulk of its production, with Raphael Williams Jr. (52 catches, 741 yards, 7 TD) and Kenny Johnson (47 catches, 658 yards, 5 TD) both gone, leaving Cataurus Hicks (24 catches, 422 yards, 4 TD) as the only proven target left standing. The fix comes via Western Carolina transfer Malik Knight, who posted 47 catches for 774 yards and 7 TD last season and should step in as an immediate answer opposite Hicks. Four-star signee Rodney Dunbar and fellow freshmen Bryan Hamilton and Demetrice McCray add long-term upside, but with a passing attack that ranked 20th nationally in yards per game, the near-term burden falls on Knight to replace lost volume immediately, not develop into it.
Pittsburgh's entire tight end production from 2025 walked out the door, with Justin Holmes (28 catches, 4 TD), Jake Overman, Josh Altsman and Malachi Thomas all gone, and none of the returning trio of Truitt Brown, Adam Howanitz or Max Hunt carrying so much as a recorded catch. The answers came from the portal rather than within the room: Elijah Lagg arrives from UAB off a 20-catch season and Carson Kent joins from Oklahoma, though neither profiles as the kind of red-zone target Holmes and Thomas were. That's a real hole for an offense that leaned on its passing game (274 yards per game, 20th nationally) and thrived on explosive plays, so Lagg's usage early will say a lot about whether Pitt's downfield identity holds up.
The 44 sacks allowed and a rushing attack stuck at 118 yards per game tell the real story here, a line that couldn't protect the passer or open holes even while Pittsburgh's passing game hummed. Most of the room returns, led on paper by seniors BJ Williams, Isaiah Montgomery, Keith Gouveia and Kendall Stanley, but none of them prevented last year's collapse on third down (33.3%) or in short-yardage push, so continuity alone won't fix it. Pat Narduzzi went to the high school ranks for size up front, landing four-star tackle Nick Howard and a trio of three-star linemen in John Curran, Mike Van Der Oord and Netinho Olivieri, a bet that fresh bodies can eventually out-develop the group that just allowed pressure at one of the highest rates in the country.
Pittsburgh's run defense finished 8th nationally, and the group most responsible for that gets its top disruptors back in Isaiah Neal (7 TFL, 3.5 sacks) and Jimmy Scott (7.5 TFL, 4 sacks). The losses of Joey Zelinsky and Jahsear Whittington thin the rotation, but Sean FitzSimmons, Nick James and Zach Crothers all logged real snaps, and Illinois transfer Jeremiah Warren and Tulane transfer Eliyt Nairne arrive with tackles already on their résumés rather than as projects. The bigger question is the pass rush: 31 sacks left this defense 100th against the pass a year ago, and nobody in this room profiles as the edge threat who fixes that on his own.
Rasheem Biles (100 tackles, 17 TFL) and Kyle Louis (79 tackles, 8 TFL) are both gone, stripping Pittsburgh's front seven of the two players most responsible for a defense that ranked 7th in tackles for loss and 13th in havoc rate. Braylan Lovelace, who put up 79 tackles and 5.5 TFL of his own, now becomes the clear centerpiece, flanked by Cameron Lindsey's 5.5 TFL production, but neither has ever carried a Pittsburgh defense as its primary run-stopper. Memphis transfer DeMarco Ward arrives with 50 tackles and 3 TFL of proven work, and he projects as the fastest path to replacing the lost disruption, with four-star high school arrivals Reston Lehman and Isaiah Simmons stocked for the future rather than 2026 answers.
Pittsburgh stuffed the run at an elite clip in 2025, but 100th in passing yards allowed per game exposed the secondary as the unit dragging down an otherwise stout front. The fix leans on continuity up top, with Cruce Brookins (53 tackles) and Shadarian Harrison (29 tackles) back to anchor things, paired with a corner reload built almost entirely from scratch after Kavir Bains-Marquez and Tamon Lynum departed. Auburn transfer Raion Strader steps into that void immediately, while high school signees Kentrail McRae, Da'Ron Barksdale, Tony Forney and Isaac Patterson give Pat Narduzzi a deep, unproven bench that will need to develop fast if Pittsburgh wants its pass defense to catch up to its run defense.
Trey Butkowski's departure strips away a leg that hit 20 of 23 field goals and 103 points, and Pittsburgh has to piece that together from a crowded room rather than a proven closer. Sam Hunsaker made 11 of 15 with a 72-point season and Antonio Chadha connected on 12 of 17 with a long of 53, so Narduzzi has two experienced options who already have game snaps rather than a total unknown. Purdue transfer Justin Schmidt takes over long-snapping duties behind Kaemon Tijerina's holding hand, and if either Hunsaker or Chadha simply repeats last year's accuracy this group holds steady even without its most reliable veteran.
Pittsburgh's passing game gets rebuilt around Mason Heintschel, who threw for 2357 yards and 16 touchdowns last season and now inherits the job outright after Eli Holstein's departure. The bigger hole is at receiver, where Raphael Williams Jr. (52 catches, 741 yards) and Kenny Johnson (47 catches, 658 yards) are both gone, leaving Western Carolina transfer Malik Knight (47 catches, 774 yards at his previous stop) to replace that production on the outside. Up front on defense, the loss of Rasheem Biles (100 tackles, 4.5 sacks) and Kyle Louis (79 tackles, 3 sacks) hits harder than the No. 44 recruiting class or 16 portal arrivals can offset on paper, putting real weight on Memphis linebacker transfer DeMarco Ward to fill snaps immediately.
Raphael Williams Jr.'s 741 yards walk out the door, and Pittsburgh answers by importing Malik Knight from Western Carolina, who caught 47 passes for 774 yards and 7 touchdowns a level down. Mason Heintschel threw 16 touchdowns against 8 interceptions last year, and how quickly Knight becomes a trusted vertical target alongside Cataurus Hicks determines whether Heintschel's efficiency climbs or whether the offense leans even harder on the run game to survive.
Pat Narduzzi's team was the bet to make away from home in 2025, going 4-1 as a road side and covering as a road underdog both times it had the number. Book it as a home favorite and Pitt covered every single time, going 4-0, while conference play produced a 6-2 cover mark that outran the home split of 4-3. The market undervalued this group on the road and overvalued the drama at Heinz Field, a gap bettors should account for again in 2026.
