Michael Desormeaux is asking a roster stripped to 48% returning production to rebuild on the fly around Lunch Winfield, and with a defense that gave up 29.2 points a game a year ago, the margin for turnover on either side of the ball is thin.
Can Michael Desormeaux field a defense with just 36.5% returning production and still win close Sun Belt games? The most likely outcome is a rocky first half of the schedule while largely new faces learn on the job, with the unit leaning on whatever Lunch Winfield and the offense can produce to cover for early breakdowns. Louisiana's floor in 2026 gets set by how fast that defense catches up, not by anything happening on offense.
Louisiana's 128th-ranked schedule is built almost entirely of winnable Sun Belt games, but the trip to USC is the one true outlier and a near-certain loss that will not move the needle on the season. The real proving ground sits at Southern Miss and at Louisiana Tech, a pair of true toss-ups that will decide whether Michael Desormeaux's group cashes in on a soft slate or leaves winnable road games on the table. With the projected record sitting at 7-5, this is a schedule that should produce bowl eligibility if the Ragin' Cajuns simply handle the games they are favored in against Charlotte, Troy, and Georgia State.

Michael Desormeaux heads into year five with a split resume from 2025: a 5-3 mark inside the Sun Belt that shows real command of the league, paired with an overall 6-7 finish and a national power rating stuck at No. 99 that shows the nonconference and margin-of-schedule results dragged the whole picture down. That gap between solid conference football and a losing overall record is the story to watch in 2026, since continued success against Sun Belt peers won't matter to outside perception if the full-season number doesn't move. Louisiana has the in-league identity to build from, the question is whether Desormeaux can turn that into a winning season top to bottom.
Lunch Winfield returns after throwing for 1,555 yards with 11 touchdowns against 7 interceptions, and the offense he runs is defined by a split personality: a rushing attack that ranked 34th nationally in yards per game propping up a passing game that finished 123rd. That imbalance did the offense no favors on scoring opportunities (3.45 points per chance, 96th), and it will not fix itself unless Winfield cuts down the picks and forces defenses to respect the pass. The bigger problem sits on the other side of the ball, where a defense allowing 187 rushing yards per game and posting a 13.5% havoc rate let 46.1% of opponent plays stay on schedule, so even a cleaner Winfield may not be enough to flip the close losses from 2025.
Lunch Winfield's 11-touchdown, 7-interception year came inside a passing attack that finished 123rd nationally, and that gap is the actual story here: Louisiana leaned on a 183-yard rushing game while Winfield's yards per attempt stayed modest. With Walker Howard gone, Winfield now owns the job outright, and the offense's ceiling in 2026 depends on whether he can push a 161-yard-per-game air raid closer to respectable rather than just managing games behind the run. Daniel Beale's 4 interceptions on only 385 yards make him a shaky fallback, so this is Winfield's offense to carry, not share.
Louisiana's leading rushers from a run game that ranked 34th nationally in yards per game are both gone, with Bill Davis (763 yards, 6 TD) and Zylan Perry (689 yards, 8 TD) taking their combined production out the door. Steven Blanco returns after a modest 156-yard, 2-TD season, but the real bet is Howard transfer Anthony Reagan Jr., who ran for 549 yards and 7 touchdowns and now steps into the lead role behind an offense that still needs to establish a passing threat. If Reagan Jr. can approximate what Davis and Perry did, the ground game stays the identity of this offense while the rest of the unit catches up.
Shelton Sampson Jr. is the whole passing game here, and everything else is noise. His 537 yards dwarf what Robert Williams, Charles Robertson and Dale Martin took with them, and the closest returning complement, Landon Strother, has all of 78 yards on his career ledger. That imbalance lines up with a passing attack that finished 123rd in the country a year ago, so unless Kristion Brooks or one of the low-volume returnees turns into a real second target fast, Louisiana's offense stays exactly what it was in 2025, a run-first unit leaning on one receiver to make the passing game function at all.
Caden Jensen was the closest thing this passing game had to a security blanket, his 29 catches modest only next to how badly Louisiana needed targets given a passing attack stuck at 123rd nationally. He and Brock Chappell both return, and with Trey Miller's 13 grabs gone, the room actually gets deeper rather than thinner, with Quandre Coates, Aiden Falgout, Teddy Gawlik and Khristian Mackintrush all still on hand even without a stat line yet. Jeremiah Birdlow arrives as a project piece, but the immediate math says Jensen's usage has to grow if Michael Desormeaux's offense wants to find any explosiveness through the air in 2026.
Louisiana's line paved the way for 183 rushing yards a game in 2025, a mark that ranked 34th nationally, even as the passing game stalled at 123rd and the offense's success rate sat at 110th. That run-blocking baseline stays largely intact with Zay Alexander, Ryder Bentley, John Bragg, Matthew Broussard, Xzavier Brown and Ryan Ebrahim all back, giving Michael Desormeaux far more continuity up front than attrition, with only Bryant Williams, Jax Harrington and Mackey Maillho gone. The fix for 2026 has to come in pass protection and explosiveness rather than a personnel overhaul, and a trio of three-star tackles and interior additions, led by Jai'Vale Mayes-Hudson and Michael Bowens Jr. up front and Gunnar Goodwin, Trey Shaw and Jayce Mitchell inside, gives Desormeaux bodies to push a group that allowed 24 sacks and ranked 106th in yards per play.
Louisiana loses its entire front's production in one offseason, with Jordan Lawson's 52 tackles and 4.5 sacks off the edge, plus Jaelen Crider's 2.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL, Kadarius Miller and Fitzgerald West Jr. all gone from a line that already ranked 117th against the run and 106th in tackles for loss. What's left is Maxie Baudoin IV, who posted just 14 tackles and a single sack, alongside Chase Edwards and Priest Ashe, none of whom approach the disruption Lawson and Crider provided. Five three-star arrivals, including edge rushers Jordan Pinnock, Ty Dominique, Devin Franklin and Tito Chikere plus interior addition Brodrick Stewart, will have to find snaps fast for a front that finished 110th in havoc rate, because the returning names alone are not built to fix a run defense that gave up 187 yards a game.
Louisiana's front seven loses its two most productive tacklers, Jaden Dugger (124 tackles, 4 sacks, 13 TFL) and Terrence Williams (95 tackles), gutting a run defense that already ranked 117th in rushing yards allowed per game. Jake St. Andre (50 tackles) is the lone proven every-down piece left, flanked by Ashley Williams and a thin group of Drenon Fite, Lester Jones, Kailep Edwards and Hayden Darbonne who combined for modest snaps a year ago. Princeton Malbrue arrives from LSU with only 3 tackles on his resume, while Patrick Gosslee and Harrison Kidder come in as high school signees rather than ready-made fixes, so this unit's tackle-for-loss numbers project to stay closer to last season's 106th-ranked mark than to Dugger's departed production.
Louisiana's secondary loses four of its five safeties in tackle production, and the numbers explain why that's alarming rather than a simple churn story: a defense that already surrendered 187 rushing yards per game and let 46.1% of opponent snaps stay on schedule is replacing Courtline Flowers, Tyree Skipper and Jalen Clark with a back end built almost entirely from three-star freshmen. Maurion Eleam and Collin Jacob return as the only safeties with real tape, and Brent Gordon Jr.'s 62 tackles make him the identifiable holdover in the back seven, but Jayden Reed, Luke Green and Rod Bingham are being asked to play immediately behind a front that ranked 106th in tackles for loss. Edrick Williams and Julius Harper arrive to restock a cornerback room that also lost Trae Tomlinson, and until that group settles, the yards-per-play issues that plagued 2025 look more likely to persist than disappear.
Tony Sterner stays put as the guy Louisiana trusts in the kicking game, having connected on 20 of 28 tries last year and piled up 98 points, with a career long of 55 still on his resume. The bigger swing is at punter, where Nathan Torney and his 42-yard average are gone and Mason Golding, arriving from ProKick Australia, steps in to replace him. Louisiana also has to break in a new long snapper after losing both Carter Milliron and Hunter Sims, handing that job to incoming Jackson Villaume.
The story here is not the modest portal traffic but what walked out the door at linebacker, where Jaden Dugger (124 tackles, 4 sacks) and Terrence Williams (95 tackles) both left, alongside Bill Davis and Zylan Perry, who combined for real production out of the backfield. Louisiana answers the ground-game hole with Howard transfer Anthony Reagan Jr., who ran for 549 yards and 7 touchdowns, while the linebacker and edge spots lean on unproven names like Princeton Malbrue, Jordan Pinnock and Ty Dominique to simply hold the line. Lunch Winfield returns at quarterback off a 1,555-yard, 11-touchdown season, and with Robert Williams and Charles Robertson both gone at receiver, how much he can lift a retooled skill group matters more than any single arrival on this list.
Winfield is back with 1,555 yards and 11 touchdowns already in his ledger, but the 7 interceptions are the real story of Louisiana's ceiling. With Bill Davis gone and Howard transfer Anthony Reagan Jr. taking over the backfield, the run game carries more question marks than answers, which means Winfield has to protect the ball and lean on Shelton Sampson Jr. rather than force throws into trouble. Cut his turnovers and this offense keeps pace with a defense anchored by Brent Gordon Jr. and Jake St. Andre.
Louisiana bettors made their money inside Sun Belt play, where the Cajuns covered five of eight and went 5-3 straight up, a sharper number than the flat home-favorite mark of one cover in three tries. Michael Desormeaux's team was a live road dog too, covering three of five as an underdog away from Cajun Field. Expect books to keep shading Louisiana as a favorite off last year's overall record while the conference-schedule number tells the truer story of this group.
