Brad Jackson takes over an offense that already scored 36.5 points a game and a roster ranked 76th nationally for talent, so the gap between that pedigree and a defense giving up 29.0 points a game is what actually decides whether Texas State climbs from an 84th-ranked outfit or just repeats last year's split conference record.
Can GJ Kinne's defense survive losing 31.5% of its returning production and still hold up enough for Brad Jackson's offense to outscore people? The most likely path is that Texas State leans hard on volume and tempo again, because a nearly rebuilt defensive two-deep is not fixed in one offseason and this team is built to win shootouts, not slow them down. Expect the record to track directly with how many possessions Jackson's offense controls, since the defense is the unit with the furthest to climb.
Texas State's whole season comes down to three trips: a near-hopeless visit to Texas, a 25% shot at Boise State and a 30% shot at San Diego State. Everything else on the slate is a near-coin-flip or better, including a home date with Colorado State at 75% and Utah State at 62%, which is why GJ Kinne's fourth team projects to 6-5 despite a schedule ranked just 70th in difficulty. Split even one of those three road tests and this group is a bowl team again; lose all three and the difference between 2025's 7-6 and another middling finish is exactly that gap.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Texas State went 3-5 in conference play despite outgaining league opponents by 87.9 yards per game, the kind of gap that points to a bounce-back rather than a repeat slide. A 1-4 mark in one-score games and a -5 turnover margin over 13 games were the actual difference between the box score and the record, and neither tends to hold. With 71% of production back, GJ Kinne's fourth team looks built to close those close-game gaps rather than open new ones.
Brad Jackson returns after throwing for 3223 yards and 21 touchdowns, and with 474 total yards per game running through him, Texas State's offense is built to outscore whatever the defense gives up. That defense gave up 29.0 points per game and finished 103rd in turnover margin last season, so the burden falls right back on Jackson to protect the ball and keep matching scores rather than relying on stops. The formula worked well enough to get to 36.5 points per game in 2025, but a repeat requires Jackson trimming his interception count while the run game, which churned 223 yards per game, keeps opposing offenses off the field.
Brad Jackson threw for 3223 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and returns as the unquestioned starter behind an offense that ranked 5th nationally in total yards per game. That continuity matters more than the arrivals around him, since Boston College transfer Shaker Reisig brings only 141 yards and a rough 1-to-2 TD-INT mark from his time there, and Easton Webb arrives straight out of high school from Charles Page as a developmental piece rather than immediate competition. With Jackson set, the bigger question for 2026 is cleaning up protection after 26 sacks allowed a year ago, not who lines up under center.
Lincoln Pare's 1,129 yards and 12 scores walk out the door, along with Greg Burrell's 671 yards, gutting the group that powered a rushing attack ranked 10th nationally in yards per game. Torrance Burgess Jr. returns but with only 95 yards and a single touchdown on his resume, nowhere near replacement level for what Pare provided, so Trinity import Juntavious Harris arrives with real opportunity to seize early carries. GJ Kinne's offense can still score through the air at 251 yards per game, but until someone in this room proves capable of bell-cow volume, the ground game that made Texas State explosive takes a step back in 2026.
Beau Sparks (84 catches, 1,200 yards, 10 TD) and Chris Dawn Jr. (65-1,007-4) give Texas State the rare luxury of returning both starting outside threats from an offense that piled up 474 yards per game, so the story for 2026 is about adding juice, not replacing it. GJ Kinne restocked around them with transfer Zechariah Sample from Arizona State and four incoming freshmen in Xavier Warren, Davian Jackson, Blake McLane and Dameon Crowe, giving Kylen Evans more room to grow after a modest 15-catch debut. The passing game ranked just 43rd nationally in yards per game despite that firepower, and with Sparks and Dawn both back, the ceiling for 2026 is a more explosive vertical attack rather than a rebuild.
Titus Lyons and his 3 touchdowns are gone, but no Texas State tight end topped 10 catches last year anyway in an offense that put up 474 yards per game mostly on the ground and through the air rather than to this room. Blake Smith (10 catches, 105 yards) and Ty Stamey (7 catches, 48 yards) are the only proven pass-catchers back, while Arvis Battle Jr., Jake Simpson, Cole Snodgrass and Jordan Williams all arrive with no production on file. Three-star signee Russell Crawford joins as a true freshman with zero track record, so GJ Kinne's attack keeps leaning on its 223 rushing yards per game and explosive numbers rather than asking this group to carry the passing game.
Eight linemen who protected a group that produced 474 yards per game (5th nationally) and 223 rushing yards per game are gone, including Anfernee Crease, Brock Riker, Lysander Moeolo, Emeka Obigbo and Ian Langford, so GJ Kinne rebuilt this room almost from scratch. The fixes came from the portal in tackles Rasheed Jackson (TCU) and William Boone (North Carolina) and guard Jaylen Early (Missouri), while Eric Perkins arrives as a high school signee out of Marshall and Teagan Lindsey joins from Callisburg. With 15 bodies back against those departures, seniors Sully Burns and Alan Grimme give Kinne some experience to lean on, but the 26 sacks allowed a year ago (81st) mean the newcomers have real ground to make up just to hold serve.
Kalil Alexander and Kenard Snyder combined for a stack of tackles for loss last year and both are gone, leaving DonTerry Russell as the only proven disruptor with his 5.5 TFL and 4 sacks. Texas State backfills with volume rather than a name replacement, adding Jason Patterson, Cullen Thompson, Phillip Bradford, Chancellor Owens and Cam Christian, none of whom carry meaningful college production yet. A group that helped rank 9th nationally in tackles for loss and 10th in run-stuff rate now leans on Russell and Bryce Carter to keep that identity while five newcomers find the field.
Treylin Payne's 101 tackles walk out the door, and no single returner is built to replace that workload alone, so Texas State leans on volume: Ayden Jones (52 tackles) and Terrence Cooks II (46 tackles, 4.5 TFL) both come back as the tone-setters behind a front that already ranked 9th nationally in tackles for loss. Arkansas State transfer Javante Mackey adds 25 tackles and 2.5 TFL of proven production to that mix, while Cole Nilles (27 tackles, 3 TFL) rounds out a group that has the pieces to keep the run-stuff rate (24.4%, 10th) elite even without Payne's name at the top of the sheet. The bigger swing factor is the pass defense, since 218 yards allowed per game (61st) and 5.54 yards per play (62nd) show this level still has work to do turning tackles into stops that actually get the offense off schedule.
Texas State loses its top back-end tackler in Bobby Crosby (59 tackles, 2 sacks) along with corners Khamari Terrell and Jaden Rios, but nobody returning cracked 30 stops either, with Amarion Atwood's 29 tackles topping the group. That thin production explains why GJ Kinne went to the portal for Dexter Ricks Jr., who arrives from Liberty with 18 tackles of his own experience, plus Colorado State safety John Smith and Burleson corner Jayden Flournoy to fill out the room. The unit's real strength lives up front, not in this group, given a defense that ranked 9th nationally in tackles for loss and 10th in run-stuff rate a year ago, so Ricks and Atwood mostly need to clean up what the front seven already wrecks.
Tyler Robles leaves behind a 21 of 23 clip with a 50-yard long and 116 points, and Texas State didn't bother hoping an unproven leg could match it, instead pulling Dylan Cunanan in from Toledo. Cunanan's own numbers, 8 of 10 field goals with a 46-yard long, aren't as sharp as what he's replacing, but they beat guessing among Jacob Bonilla and Michael James, neither of whom carries any prior stats. At punter, David Nunez's 40.7-yard average also walks out the door, leaving Thomas Flintoff, arriving from Australia, and holdover Tom Flintoff to settle a job with zero returning production to lean on.
Texas State loses its entire rushing attack, with Lincoln Pare (1129 yards, 12 TD), Greg Burrell (671 yards, 3 TD) and Jaylen Jenkins all out the door, while the front seven that produced Kalil Alexander's 11.5 TFL and Kenard Snyder's 9 TFL also empties out. Brad Jackson, who threw for 3223 yards and 21 touchdowns, is the projected starter and the clear holdover piece an offense otherwise rebuilding around him. The defensive answer arrives via the portal rather than development, with Jason Patterson, Javante Mackey and Dexter Ricks Jr. all brought in as replacement pieces for a unit that lost its top three tacklers up front.
With Lincoln Pare and his 1129 rushing yards gone, Texas State's ground game takes a real hit, which puts even more weight on Brad Jackson finding Beau Sparks, who caught 84 balls for 1200 yards and 10 scores a year ago. If defenses key on Sparks and Chris Dawn Jr. doesn't force them off him, Jackson's 21 touchdowns against 7 interceptions gets a lot harder to replicate without a run game to lean on.
Texas State went 7-6 straight up but bettors who backed the Bobcats lost money almost every way possible, covering just 38% of the time overall and cratering to 25% against the spread in conference play. The tell is what happened after a loss, a miserable 1-5 against the number, suggesting GJ Kinne's team did not respond well when it needed to reset. Public bettors should treat this program as a fade until it proves it can cover coming off a bad week, especially now that a jump to the Pac-12 changes the whole betting market around it.
