Jeff Brohm has the No. 50 roster talent in the country and a defense that held teams to 21.2 points per game, but he is rebuilding around Kienholz with just 19% of last season's production back, so 2026 comes down to whether a transfer with almost no track record can keep pace with a roster good enough to win the ACC.
Can Lincoln Kienholz operate an offense that returns almost nothing else around him? With just 15.5% of offensive production back, Kienholz will be throwing to receivers and behind a line largely unproven in this scheme, and the more likely path is a rocky, inconsistent first half while Jeff Brohm leans on the run and simplifies the passing game until chemistry catches up.
The season opens with the toughest task on the board, a neutral site date with Ole Miss that Louisville is projected to lose more often than win, so Jeff Brohm's group has to find its identity fast rather than easing in. Nothing after that is a gimme either, with a true toss-up at home against SMU and a road trip to Kentucky both sitting in coin-flip territory, and a middle stretch of NC State, Florida State and Georgia Tech all in the mid-50s. An 8-4 projection with an 89% bowl number reads as a team built to survive a schedule ranked 45th in difficulty rather than steamroll it, and how Louisville handles that Ole Miss-SMU-Kentucky trio will say more about this program than the eight probable wins around them.

Jeff Brohm's ninth-ranked power rating and 9-4 mark head into year four with a roster that returns just 19% of its production, and the details underneath complicate the good feeling. Louisville's conference-game win rate actually sat below what its yardage margin against those same opponents implied, meaning the Cardinals were the ones getting shortchanged by the scoreboard, not the other side. The offense scored more cheaply than the league average per yard gained, which is the least repeatable part of this profile with so much production churning over, while a defense that let opponents score cheaply too points to real work ahead for Brohm's staff.
Louisville's identity in 2026 runs through a defense that ranked 16th in yards allowed and 13th in yards per play, a unit that stayed stout even as the offense sputtered on third down (105th) and struggled to hit explosive plays (90th in explosiveness). The bigger swing factor is center stage now: Lincoln Kienholz, the Ohio State transfer projected to start at quarterback, threw just 139 yards and a single touchdown in his limited action, a thin sample for a staff replacing its offensive engine. If Jeff Brohm's ground game holds at last year's clip, that defense buys enough margin for Kienholz to grow into the job rather than have to fix the offense overnight.
Miller Moss threw for 2,679 yards and is gone, and Louisville replaces its entire quarterback room rather than handing the reins to an heir apparent. Lincoln Kienholz, who arrives from Ohio State, takes the first-team reps as the front-runner, but Davin Wydner's 1,672 yards and 15 touchdowns at West Georgia make him a real threat to the job, and four-star Briggs Cherry adds another arm to the competition. Whoever wins the camp battle inherits an offense that already moved the ball at 5.97 yards per play but stalled badly on third down (105th nationally), so the bigger swing for 2026 is whether new blood under center fixes the conversion problem, not just who takes the snaps.
Louisville barely lost a thing here. Isaac Brown (884 yards, 7 TD) and Keyjuan Brown (704 yards, 6 TD) both come back to anchor a run game that carried a 61st-ranked rushing attack, while the only real subtractions were Duke Watson's 158 yards and a pair of backups who barely touched the ball. Missouri transfer Marquise Davis adds a proven change-of-pace piece behind them, giving Jeff Brohm three backs with real production for the first time and pushing this from a two-man rotation into a legitimate committee that should outrun an offense still searching for explosive plays through the air.
Chris Bell (72 catches, 917 yards) and Caullin Lacy (60 catches, 635 yards) are both gone, wiping out the bulk of last year's production for a passing game that already sat 76th in yards per game, so Jeff Brohm rebuilt the room almost entirely through the portal. Tre Richardson arrives from Vanderbilt off a 47-catch, 810-yard season, and Lawayne McCoy (Florida State) and Jackson Voth (Drake) add proven volume rather than projection at the position. DeVaun Jones and Terrence McWilliams Jr. return without a statistical track record, which means the passing attack's ceiling in 2026 rides almost entirely on how fast Richardson and McCoy translate their production into Louisville's offense.
Louisville didn't lose much production at tight end, but it upgraded the room anyway, bringing in Brody Foley from Tulsa off a 36-catch, 521-yard, 7-touchdown season to pair with returning leader Jaleel Skinner (21 catches, 204 yards). Justyn Reid arrives from Tulane as insurance, while Hamilton Atkins, Travis Egan and Dylan Mesman round out a group with no established stat lines of their own. With a passing game that ranked 76th nationally in yards per game and a third-down rate stuck at 105th, Foley's chain-moving ability at Tulsa is exactly the kind of matchup piece Jeff Brohm's offense has been missing underneath.
Louisville allowed 24 sacks and posted a middling 5.97 yards per play behind a line that now loses 12 pieces from last year's group, a churn rate that outstrips the eight names coming back. Jeff Brohm rebuilt the room through the portal and high school ranks alike, adding Eryx Daugherty from Boston College up front and tackles Cason Henry, Charlie Edgeworth and Jarvis Strickland to pair with senior holdovers Lance Robinson and Naeer Jackson. With that much turnover up front, Louisville's offense is betting its 46th-ranked scoring output holds up while five or more new faces settle into the trenches together.
Clev Lubin (8 sacks, 13 TFL) is the rare returning constant on a line that lost AJ Green, Jerry Lawson, Denzel Lowry, Micah Carter and Justin Beadles in one offseason purge. Louisville answered by importing production rather than upside, grabbing Tyler Thompson from North Carolina (7 sacks, 7.5 TFL) and Jerod Smith II from Kentucky (5 TFL) to plug in immediately alongside Lubin. This unit was already stout against the run, ranking 22nd in rushing yards allowed per game, and with Thompson pairing off the edge with Lubin, that identity should sharpen rather than reset.
Louisville's best linebacker production from a year ago is gone, with TJ Quinn (95 tackles, 8 TFL) and Antonio Watts (42 tackles, 7 TFL) both departed off a defense that ranked 16th nationally in yards allowed per game. T.J. Capers, who managed 46 tackles a year ago, becomes the clear veteran anchor, flanked by Stanquan Clark, while three-star transfer Ben Perry (UCLA) and true freshmen Taj Powell and Brady Ballart arrive with no college production to lean on yet. That leaves 2026 as a rebuild-on-the-fly job for a group replacing its two most disruptive tacklers with unproven names, even as the line in front of them helped hold opponents to 4.71 yards per play, 13th nationally.
Louisville's secondary loses its top two tacklers in D'Angelo Hutchinson (84 tackles) and JoJo Evans Jr. (64 tackles), the kind of production hole that could sink a group ranked 25th in pass defense last year. The Cardinals didn't sit still, importing Koen Entringer from Iowa, who racked up 73 tackles there, and Kaleb Beasley from Tennessee to plug straight into the back end alongside Tayon Holloway, the lone returner with a real track record (42 tackles, 3.5 TFL). With T.J. Banks and four-star corner Jaydin Broadnax also in the mix, this is a near wholesale reload at defensive back, betting that a 16th-ranked yards-allowed defense can absorb heavy turnover through the transfer portal rather than internal continuity.
Louisville is replacing its entire kicking operation rather than tweaking it. Cooper Ranvier, who made 21 of 25 field goals and put up 102 points last season, is gone, and the answer isn't incumbent Nick Keller, who hit just 2 of 4 kicks in limited action. It's Rhode Island transfer Garth White, who connected on 14 of 15 with a 54-yard long and 96 points, stepping in as the clear favorite to take over. The punting job flips too, with Eastern Kentucky's Jacob Baker (66 punts, 42.3 average) brought in to outkick returning holdover Adam Winkenhofer and replace departed punter David Chapeau's 39.8 average.
Miller Moss's 2,679 yards walk out the door, and Louisville replaces him with Lincoln Kienholz, who threw for just 139 yards at Ohio State, projected to lead an offense that returns only 15.5% of its production. The receiving corps gets a real facelift with Tre Richardson (810 yards at Vanderbilt) and Brody Foley (521 yards, 7 TD at Tulsa) arriving to offset the losses of Chris Bell and Caullin Lacy, but that group has to learn a new quarterback from scratch. Defensively, TJ Quinn, D'Angelo Hutchinson and JoJo Evans Jr. all depart, leaving Koen Entringer, who posted 73 tackles at Iowa, as the headline newcomer tasked with steadying a unit that gave up points cheaply a year ago.
Lincoln Kienholz steps in for Miller Moss off just 139 passing yards at Ohio State, but he does not have to replicate Moss's numbers with Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown both back after combining for real production on the ground. Louisville's offense finished drives efficiently a year ago, a trait the model flags as unlikely to repeat, so how much Kienholz and new receiver Tre Richardson can create through the air determines whether this offense holds up or leans entirely on the run.
Louisville won nine games straight up in 2025, but bettors who backed the Cardinals at home got burned, an 0-7 mark against the spread as a home favorite that dragged the overall record to 4-9 against the number. The disconnect flips completely away from Cardinal Stadium, where Jeff Brohm's team covered three of four road games. Until Louisville proves it can protect a number in front of its own crowd, 2026 bettors have more reason to trust this team on the highway than as the chalk at home.
