Sun Belt 2026 Season Preview

James Madison's Race to Lose

James Madison sits atop the projected order at No. 75 nationally, the clear favorite in a conference where the next four teams (Old Dominion, Southern Miss, Troy, Louisiana) all land within a tight No. 85 to No. 99 band. Southern Miss projects as the closest pursuer and our pick to meet James Madison in the title game, but with Old Dominion, Troy and Louisiana all projected for six or seven wins, that matchup is far from settled. This is not a two-team race so much as a five-team scramble for the second slot behind James Madison, with Georgia Southern, Marshall and Arkansas State projected further back at 5-7 or 6-6.

Marshall Tops the Ballot

Marshall places four players on the Sun Belt preseason all-conference team, more than any other program, anchored by quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, receiver Owen Sweeney, defensive lineman Braydin Ward and linebacker Javae Gilmore. The rest of the ballot spreads across the league rather than clustering, with App State landing three picks (Chris Lofton, Aiden Benton, Colton Phares) and Troy, Louisiana Tech and Arkansas State each getting multiple honorees on both sides of the ball. Georgia State's Savion Hart and James Madison's Nick Herman give the backfield two distinct names rather than one dominant back, and the secondary is stitched together from five different schools, Louisiana, Old Dominion, Troy and Arkansas State among them. That distribution, one clear top program in Marshall but honorees pulled from nine different schools overall, points to a Sun Belt without a true monopoly at the top.

No Single Power Base

The Sun Belt's best returning rooms are scattered across seven different campuses rather than stacked at one program. Ayden Pereira gives Georgia State the top quarterback room, and that school edges the ledger by holding 1 of the 7 top spots, but James Madison's Nick Herman, Arkansas State's Chauncy Cobb, Louisiana Tech's Eli Finley, Troy's Donnie Smith, App State's Colton Phares and Old Dominion's Mario Easterly each top their own position group. That spread means no team enters 2026 with a clear talent monopoly, instead the conference's returning production is genuinely shared, room by room, across nearly every corner of the league.
