Mason McKenzie arrives from Saginaw Valley State to run an offense that finished 85th in scoring, but the bigger problem sits on the other side of the ball, where a defense that allowed 32.8 points a game returns barely a third of its production and Bill O'Brien has to find answers fast in year three.
Can an offense that returns just 11.4% of its production find any rhythm before conference play grinds it down? The receiving corps loses Lewis Bond's 89 catches and 1,010 yards with almost nobody else back to soak up those targets, which means whatever chemistry McKenzie builds has to happen from scratch in real games. The defense, holding 50.1% of its production, is the steadier half of this roster, and Boston College's floor in 2026 gets set by how much that unit can cover for an offense still learning itself.
Bill O'Brien's 2026 fate rests less on the roster than the calendar: trips to Notre Dame (3% win) and Miami (5%) are near-automatic losses, and a visit to SMU (15%) is not far behind. The season's real margin lives in the toss-ups against Rutgers (50%) and Syracuse (52%), where a 2-10 team has to actually finish games it can win. Projected at 4-8 with just 13% bowl odds, Boston College's path back to relevance runs through those coin-flip games, not the murderers' row at the top of the schedule.

Bill O'Brien's third season followed the same trajectory as his second, only worse, with the Eagles finishing 2-10 and 1-7 in ACC play. The power rating of 78th nationally reads as far more respectable than the record, a gap that points to close losses and a program that competed better than the win column shows. That disconnect is the real story entering 2026, whether Boston College can turn near misses into actual wins in conference games it has mostly been losing.
Boston College could throw it in 2025, ranking 15th nationally in passing yards per game, but the line in front of that passer allowed 36 sacks (124th) and the ground game managed just 104 yards per game (128th), and both problems land on Mason McKenzie now. The Saginaw Valley State transfer arrives with no FBS statistical track record to lean on, walking into an offense that finished 99th in points per scoring opportunity, meaning drives that started well kept stalling before six. If McKenzie can protect the ball and finish drives, the passing numbers suggest a functional offense is possible, but Boston College's larger problem in 2026 is a defense that allowed 434 yards per game (128th) and forced a turnover margin of -9, a unit no new quarterback can fix by himself.
Every quarterback who threw a pass for Boston College in 2025 is gone, with Dylan Lonergan, Grayson James and Shaker Reisig all departed and none of their production walking back through the door. Mason McKenzie, in from Saginaw Valley State, takes the first-team reps as the front-runner, but Femi Babalola, Grayson Wilson and Anthony Coellner are all in camp to push him before the job is settled. Whoever wins it inherits a passing attack that ranked 15th nationally in yards per game but was betrayed by 36 sacks allowed and a ground game stuck at 104 yards per game, so the calculus for 2026 is less about arm talent and more about protection and balance.
Boston College is replacing its entire backfield production, with Turbo Richard (749 yards, 9 TD) and Jordan McDonald (397 yards, 4 TD) both gone from a rushing attack that already ranked 128th nationally at 104 yards per game. The answer arrives via the portal in Evan Dickens, who ran for 1,325 yards and 16 touchdowns at Liberty, with Nolan Ray's 289 yards from Maryland as a complementary piece behind him. None of the returning backs, Bo MacCormack III, Mekhi Dodd or Anthony Ferrucci, topped 43 yards last season, so Dickens is not competing for a job so much as inheriting one, and his workload will decide whether this offense can lean on anything besides its 280 passing yards per game.
None of Boston College's returning wideouts caught more than 13 passes in 2025, so Bill O'Brien went to the portal to replace the departed Reed Harris and his 673 yards. Reed Swanson arrives from Colgate off a 57-catch, 939-yard season and projects as the immediate top target, with Landon Wright and Javarius Green adding bodies who already have game reps at Washington State and North Carolina. That passing attack was actually a strength a year ago at 15th nationally in yards per game, so the bet here is Swanson turns a unit that lacked a proven number one into one that finally has it.
Boston College loses Jeremiah Franklin's 48 catches, which leaves Kaelan Chudzinski as the only proven pass-catcher at the position after his 24 grabs and 4 touchdowns last season. Everyone else in the room, from Zeke Moore to Florida transfer Cameron Kossmann, arrives with no real production to point to, so the tight end passing game is essentially a one-man band behind Chudzinski. That's a real risk for a Bill O'Brien offense that already threw 280 yards a game but couldn't finish drives, ranking 99th in points per scoring opportunity, and now needs Chudzinski to be a bigger red zone factor than his 4 scores last year.
Thirty-six sacks allowed and 104 rushing yards per game (128th) tell the real story of Bill O'Brien's 2025 front, and nine linemen from that group are gone, matched by nine names back in the room. Amir Johnson and Michael Crounse are the most senior returners, but with no depth chart to lean on this is effectively a new line, restocked by three-star imports Marcelino Antunes Jr., Trevon Humphrey and Lawrence Iyalekhue at tackle and Marek Jin and Kristian Phillips inside. The passing game held up at 280 yards per game (15th) behind protection that still broke down constantly, so fixing the run block and the pass pro up front is what determines whether that arm talent finally shows up on scoreboards.
Boston College's line generated just 16 sacks and 46 tackles for loss a year ago, and the group's leading returning tackler, Chris Marable Jr., posted only 0.5 sacks himself, so raw bodies are not the issue, finishing plays is. The staff answered by adding numbers rather than a single fix: Demetrius Ballard arrives from Buffalo with 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks already on his resume, while four-star Mason Leak and fellow high schoolers Demeterius Thompson, Mac Fitzgerald and Gavin Neil stack the room for later. With Sedarius McConnell's 7.5 TFL gone and only E'Lla Boykin's 2.5 TFL matching that level of disruption among returners, Ballard projects as the closest thing to an immediate difference-maker off the edge.
Boston College's leading returning tackler at linebacker put up just 15 stops last season, and that single fact explains why the room got overhauled rather than patched. Owen McGowan's 54 tackles and 5 TFL are gone, and the staff went to the portal to cover it, bringing in Anthony Palano (65 tackles at Washington State) and Justin Medlock (25 tackles, a sack at SMU) to start immediately alongside Griffin Collins. With five true freshmen and transfers folded into a group that finished 130th in tackles for loss, this is a bet that outside volume replaces inside continuity, and it needs Palano and Medlock to hit the ground running for Bill O'Brien's defense to look any different than the one that allowed 434 yards a game.
Omar Thornton's 82 tackles and 8 TFL walk out the door, and Boston College replaces that production with three-star freshmen who've never played a snap: Jordan Rodriguez, DJ Biggins, Gerald Green Jr. and Xavier Myers, plus Georgia State transfer Chandler Jordan. That's a lot of unproven bodies for a group that finished 123rd in passing yards allowed per game and 132nd in yards per play allowed. KP Price, who racked up 93 tackles, and Carter Davis (59 tackles) are the only proven pieces holding this unit together, and how fast the newcomers cut down explosive plays will decide whether the pass defense stays as porous as 2025.
On a two-win team, Luca Lombardo was the rare sure thing, hitting 16 of 17 field goals with a 52-yard long and 83 points, and he is back to anchor the kicking game in 2026. The bigger swing is at punter, where Bryce LaFollette arrives from Towson to replace Shamus Florio's 39.7-yard average with a 43.5-yard mark of his own, an upgrade that should flip some field position in close ACC games. Andy Quinn's 55-yard average came on just two punts, so LaFollette's volume and consistency make him the clear answer at the position.
Boston College gutted its skill positions this offseason, and the numbers explain why: Lewis Bond's 89 catches, Dylan Lonergan's arm and Turbo Richard's 749 yards on the ground are all gone from a 2-10 team. The answer is imported production rather than a rebuild from within, with Liberty transfer Evan Dickens (1,325 rushing yards, 16 TD) taking over the backfield and Colgate's Reed Swanson (57 catches, 939 yards) replacing Bond's targets. Under center, Saginaw Valley State product Mason McKenzie is projected to start with zero prior stats to his name, which makes Dickens and Swanson the two players who actually have to carry this offense in year three of Bill O'Brien's tenure.
Evan Dickens arrives from Liberty carrying 1,325 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, and Boston College needs every bit of that production with Mason McKenzie stepping in as the projected quarterback without a prior stat line to lean on. A ground game that can win snaps on its own takes pressure off an unproven passing attack that also lost Lewis Bond's 89 catches, making Dickens the difference between a functional offense and one that stalls out behind center.
Boston College lost games at a 2-10 clip in 2025 but stayed live against the number, going 6-6 against the spread with a perfect 3-0 cover mark against ranked competition despite dropping all three of those games outright. That gap between result and margin is the whole story for 2026 bettors: this program under Bill O'Brien keeps hanging around, especially as a road underdog where it covered 67 percent of the time. The soft spot was home, where a 1-6 straight-up mark and a 43 percent cover rate suggest the price at Alumni Stadium needs to move further before backing the Eagles there again.
