Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3ACC · Manny Diaz, year 3 · 9-5 last season · No. 52 in our FBS ratings
Manny Diaz can plug in Walker Eget behind an offense that scored 34.6 points a game, but a defense that gave back 29.4 a night, good for just 100th in scoring defense, is the reason a 9-5 team checks in at just 52 in the power ratings entering 2026.
Can Walker Eget hold up with just 19.7% of the offense's production returning around him? Duke isn't just replacing Darian Mensah's arm, it's replacing nearly the entire supporting cast that made 2025's attack go, and Eget will be throwing to a mostly rebuilt group with almost no shared history. The more likely outcome is a rough early stretch as those pieces sync up, since that little continuity rarely translates to a smooth transition no matter how the quarterback play itself shakes out.
Duke's 2026 season comes down to three road blocks and one home gut check: at Miami, at Virginia and a home date with Clemson, the three toughest outs on the board after a 9-5, 6-2 conference run in 2025. Manny Diaz's group projects as a decided underdog at Miami and against Clemson at home, and trips to Virginia, Wake Forest, NC State and Georgia Tech all sit close to a coin flip, which is why the projected 6-6 mark with bowl odds at 60% feels earned rather than padded. Home dates with Tulane, Stanford and Boston College look like the more favorable path to bowl eligibility, but going 2-1 or better in that Miami-Clemson-Virginia stretch is what separates a repeat bowl trip from a step back.

Manny Diaz won an ACC title in year two, but the underlying numbers say Duke got there on borrowed margin. The Blue Devils went 4-2 in one-score games, banked a plus turnover margin, and needed just 12.3 yards per point on offense against league foes, three trends that rarely repeat, while a conference-play yardage margin that actually trailed what a 49.1% win rate would predict shows this team overachieved its underlying play. With only 32% of production back and the offense side of that returning number down at 19.7%, year three looks like the one where the record catches up to the tape.
Duke's offense was legitimately explosive last fall, 16th in scoring and 11th through the air, but none of that production belonged to Walker Eget, the San Jose State transfer now projected to run it after throwing for 3,058 yards and 17 touchdowns elsewhere. That gap between last year's numbers and next year's passer is the whole story here, and it puts real pressure on a defense that finished 119th in yards allowed and 134th against the pass to hold up while Eget gets acclimated. The pass rush and havoc numbers, 9th in tackles for loss and 11th in run-stuff rate, give Manny Diaz a floor even if the back end keeps leaking yardage.
Darian Mensah's 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns walk out the door, but Duke didn't leave the cupboard bare at replacing him: Walker Eget arrives from San José State as the clear starter after throwing for 3,058 yards and 17 scores there. He's inheriting an offense that ranked 11th nationally in passing yards per game and 16th in scoring, so the infrastructure around him is proven even if the arm changes. Lawrence Gardner and Dan Mahan sit behind him without any prior game stats, which makes Eget's transfer experience the whole safety net if the ground game stays stuck near 88th in rushing yards per game.
Nate Sheppard is the story here, not the churn around him. His 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns anchor a backfield that lost Anderson Castle's 488 yards and 12 scores plus depth pieces in Jaquez Moore, Travis Bates and Peyton Jones, but Duke replaces that volume with four incoming three-stars in CJ Givers, Jayvian Tanelus, Wilhelm Daal II and CJ Campbell Jr. rather than a single proven complement. Paul Holyfield Jr. managed just 83 yards a year ago, so the early-down change of pace job is up for grabs among newcomers with zero college stats, which likely means Sheppard's workload only grows in 2026 even as the run game sits 88th nationally in yards per game behind Duke's passing-heavy attack.
Duke basically rebuilt this room through the portal rather than lean on what returns, and for good reason: Jayden Moore's 42 yards is the entire proven returning production at wide receiver. Jared Richardson arrives from Pennsylvania off an 80-catch, 1,033-yard, 12-touchdown season, and Javen Nicholas joins from Charlotte with 60 grabs for 740 yards, giving Manny Diaz two ready-made replacements for the combined production of Cooper Barkate and Sahmir Hagans out the door. That transfer haul has to answer for itself immediately behind an 11th-ranked passing attack, since the unproven returners like Qeanu Johnson and Jamien Little carry no game history to fall back on.
Jeremiah Hasley's 40 catches for 454 yards and 6 touchdowns anchor this group again, giving Duke's efficient passing attack (11th in yards per game) a proven safety valve up the middle. The bigger swing is depth behind him: Landen King's 15 catches and 4 scores are gone, and Louisville transfer Nate Kurisky, who caught 20 balls for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns last season, slots in as the ready-made second option rather than an unproven camp body. Three-star Benjamin Moseley adds a long-term piece, but 2026 production at tight end runs through Hasley and Kurisky.
Duke's line let up 27 sacks and ranked 88th in rushing yards per game last season even while the offense hummed through the air, and the fix for 2026 leans on continuity more than reinforcement. Seniors Jordan Larsen, Matt Craycraft and Micah Sahakian anchor a group where 14 linemen return against just five departures, with Sean Stover, a four-star interior addition from Prosper, and tackles Braden Miller and Nick Del Grande brought in to push for jobs rather than replace a gutted room. The bigger issue than personnel is scheme output, this line has to turn a middling ground game into something that takes pressure off the pass-first attack that carried Manny Diaz's offense to a 34.6 points-per-game clip.
Duke's production up front walked out the door: Vincent Anthony Jr. (7 sacks, 13 TFL), Aaron Hall (2.5 sacks, 11 TFL) and Josiah Green (3.5 sacks, 7 TFL) combined for the bulk of a line that still finished 9th nationally in tackles for loss. What's left is bodies, not sacks, with Tyshon Reed, Preston Watson, Bryce Davis and Kobe Smith topping out around a handful of tackles apiece and almost no pass-rush juice to show for it. Duke leaned on the transfer market and high school recruiting to patch the gap, signing four-star edge Obinna Umeh out of Houston St. Thomas and Penn State transfer Owen Wafle, but neither arrives with the kind of resume the departed trio put up, and a defense that already allowed 276 passing yards per game figures to feel that lost havoc before it gets replaced.
Luke Mergott anchors this group after a 91-tackle, 7.5-TFL season, but the bigger story is what's gone: Jaiden Francois (73 tackles, 7.5 TFL) and Tre Freeman (52 tackles, 4 TFL) both leave, stripping out most of the tackle production that fed Duke's No. 9 national ranking in tackles for loss. Kendall Johnson, Elliott Schaper and Nick Morris Jr. all return with modest snaps logged, and that trio has to grow into real every-down roles rather than rotational ones. Newcomers Colsen Gatten and Jon Morris arrive with no college stats yet, which means the pass defense that ranked 134th in yards allowed needs Mergott and Johnson to hold up in coverage before either freshman is trusted to fix it.
Duke's back end got torched for 276 passing yards a game, 134th nationally, even as the front seven piled up tackles for loss, so 2026 is about fixing coverage without losing that disruption. Caleb Weaver's 89 tackles walk out the door, but DaShawn Stone (86 tackles) anchors the safety spot, and Patrick Smith-Young arrives from North Texas with 70 tackles of his own to soften that loss. Cornerback gets outside reinforcements too in Western Kentucky transfer Dylan Flowers and Northwestern's Evan Smith, but with Landan Callahan, Kimari Robinson and Ché Ojarikre all back, the corner spots feel less urgent than fixing what's happening over the top.
Duke loses its actual place-kicking production, not just a name, with Todd Pelino (14 of 19, 97 points) gone and no proven successor on hand. Cosme Salas returns having attempted zero field goals a year ago, and true freshman Gavin Strange arrives from Southlake Carroll as a 3-star with no college stats to lean on, so the field-goal job is a real projection rather than a formality. Kade Reynoldson is the sturdy piece, back after averaging 44.6 yards on 44 punts, which buys the new placekicker some margin for early misses.
Duke is turning over its entire passing game at once, and the numbers say it will be a step down before it is anything else. Darian Mensah's 3973 yards and 34 touchdowns walk out the door, and Walker Eget arrives from San José State to replace him having thrown for 3058 yards with 17 touchdowns against 9 interceptions, a far less efficient line. Jared Richardson and Javen Nicholas come in from Pennsylvania and Charlotte to fill the void left by Cooper Barkate, Que'Sean Brown and Sahmir Hagans, but with Eget under center and a recruiting class ranked 71st, this offense is being rebuilt around volume transfers rather than proven chemistry.
Darian Mensah threw for 3973 yards and 34 touchdowns, and Duke replaces that arm with Walker Eget, the San José State transfer projected to start after throwing for 3058 yards with a 17-9 TD-to-INT split. Eget doesn't have to match Mensah's ceiling with Nate Sheppard back after an 1132-yard, 11-touchdown season and Jeremiah Hasley returning at tight end, but he has to cut down the interceptions if Duke wants its offense to look anything like last year's.
Duke bettors made real money in one specific spot last year: conference road games, where the Blue Devils covered at a 71% clip within league play and went 3-2-1 away from Durham overall. Home favorites were the trap, a 2-3 cover mark that turned "should win comfortably" into a losing ticket more often than not. Until Manny Diaz's group proves it can protect a number at home, the smart 2026 read stays the same as last year's actual results, fade Duke as the chalk in Durham and trust the line on the road.
