Julian Sayin inherits the top-ranked roster in the country and a defense that just allowed 9.3 points per game, so anything short of Ohio State finishing what its 12-2, 9-0 conference run started will read as underachievement, not development.
Can Ryan Day reload a defense that returns just 34.3% of its production after anchoring a national title run? The most likely outcome is yes, because Day has spent nine years stacking this program with the sort of talent that makes even a mass exodus survivable, and Julian Sayin's return gives the offense enough continuity to cover for a defense that needs time to gel. Ohio State does not need its defense to be dominant in September, it needs it competent while Sayin and a retooled receiving corps carry the load early.
The opener at Texas, a near coin flip at 48%, is the whole season in one Saturday, and everything else on the slate bends around how Ohio State handles that trip. A road test at Indiana (58%) and a home date with Oregon (64%) are the other two games that actually carry stakes, sandwiched between a stretch of should-win games against Illinois, Maryland and Northwestern that a team ranked 15th in schedule difficulty is built to survive. Michigan at home (83%) closes things out as a proven measuring stick rather than a toss-up, meaning the season's identity gets set early against Texas, not late against the rivals.

Ryan Day's ninth year comes with the top power rating in the sport and a 9-0 mark in league play, but the underlying math argues the record flattered this group. Ohio State's offense needed just 12.7 yards per point scored against a 14.1 league median, an efficiency rate that rarely holds twice, while a defense that let opponents earn 23.6 yards per point bent without breaking more than it dominated. Add a turnover margin of only plus-3 over 14 games and a conference win rate that outran what the yardage margin actually implied, and the case for 2026 is regression, not repeat, even with the losses to Indiana and Miami still fresh.
The gap that matters for Ohio State's 2026 is inside its own offense: a unit that led the country in third-down conversion (52.6%, 3rd) and success rate (51.7%, 2nd) ranked just 124th in explosiveness, meaning the Buckeyes moved the chains at a historic clip but rarely broke a game open. Julian Sayin returns after throwing for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns against just 8 picks, so the passing efficiency isn't in question, the question is whether Ohio State can turn methodical drives into the chunk plays that separate a very good offense from a great one. Meanwhile the defense that allowed 9.3 points per game, best in the nation, gives Day a margin for error most contenders don't get while that explosiveness issue sorts itself out.
Julian Sayin's 32 touchdowns against just 8 interceptions came inside an offense that finished 2nd nationally in success rate but only 124th in explosiveness, meaning Ohio State moved the chains constantly without much explaining the big-play burst. That is the real 2026 question for Sayin: he throws for 3610 yards on efficiency and third-down conversion (52.6%, 3rd nationally), not chunk plays, so the offense will keep winning the possession battle rather than the highlight reel. Behind him, Tavien St. Clair and Brady Geibel have zero proven passing production, which makes Sayin's steady hand even more the load-bearing piece of this attack.
Bo Jackson's 1,090 yards last fall came as the change-of-pace guy behind a committee, and now the touches CJ Donaldson took to the goal line (361 yards, 10 scores) are his to inherit outright. Isaiah West gives Ryan Day a proven complement at 310 yards, but the depth behind them is unproven, with Stanley Jackson Jr. and Anthony Rogers still without a carry on record and four-star Favour Akih arriving straight from high school. This is Jackson's backfield now, and Ohio State's rushing attack, already just 74th in yards per game, needs him to handle a starter's workload rather than share it.
Jeremiah Smith's 87 catches and 12 touchdowns anchor this room, but Ohio State has to replace Carnell Tate's 875 yards without a true second alpha already on hand, which is why the portal haul of Devin McCuin (65 catches, 726 yards at UTSA) and Kyle Parker (31 catches, 330 yards at LSU) matters more than any of the five-star names arriving. Brandon Inniss is back as a complementary piece, but 271 yards last season is a modest floor for a No. 2 job. The bet here is that McCuin's UTSA production translates faster than five-star freshman Chris Henry Jr. can contribute, keeping Smith from facing constant double teams.
Ohio State loses its top three tight ends from production - Max Klare's 43 catches, Will Kacmarek's 15 grabs and Jelani Thurman's 7 - and answers by pulling Hunter Welcing out of the portal from Northwestern, where he caught 28 passes for 296 yards. Bennett Christian and Nate Roberts return with modest receiving totals, but neither approaches what Klare provided, so Welcing projects as the immediate starter in an offense that ranked 2nd nationally in success rate. The bigger question is explosiveness, since this passing game finished 124th in that metric last season, and a tight end room now leaning on a first-year Buckeye needs Welcing to create the big plays the returnees never did.
Sixteen sacks allowed and a 6.74 yards-per-play mark backed one of the sharpest third-down offenses in the country last year, but the explosiveness rate sitting at 124th shows a line that ground out efficiency more than it created chunk plays. Carson Hinzman and Julian Goines-Jackson headline a group where most of the room returns, even with Ethan Onianwa and Tegra Tshabola among six departures up front. Ryan Day adds four-star tackle Sam Greer and interior signee Max Riley to a unit that should keep protecting the passer well before it worries about breaking off more big runs.
Ohio State ran the nation's stingiest defense by points and yards allowed in 2025, but that unit's disruptive edge, Caden Curry (11 sacks, 16.5 TFL) and Kayden McDonald (9 TFL), is gone, leaving Kenyatta Jackson Jr. (6.5 sacks, 11 TFL) as the lone proven difference-maker up front. The reload leans heavily on high school talent, with four-star signees Khary Wilder and Damari Simeon joining Alabama transfers James Smith and Qua Russaw, while UCF transfer John Walker adds 31 tackles of experience. With sacks already just 18th nationally and tackles for loss 40th, this line has more bodies than proven pass-rush production, and Jackson has to carry that burden until the newcomers translate their recruiting pedigree to the field.
Ohio State loses the two players who actually made this group tick, Sonny Styles (83 tackles, 6.5 TFL) and Arvell Reese (69 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 10 TFL), leaving Payton Pierce's 44 tackles as the only real returning production at the position. Wisconsin transfer Christian Alliegro arrives with real starting résumé numbers, 48 tackles and 8 TFL, and profiles as the plug-and-play answer for the departed pass rush. Five-star Cincere Johnson headlines a loaded incoming class that has no track record yet, but with a defense that allowed just 9.3 points per game a year ago, this group does not need to be great immediately, just competent while Alliegro and Johnson grow into the job.
Caleb Downs is gone, and no amount of talent replaces a safety who put up 68 tackles and 5 TFL from the back end of the nation's No. 1 pass defense. Jaylen McClain, Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Devin Sanchez return with real snaps, but the bigger bet is on the arrivals: five-star corner Jay Timmons and four-star safeties Blaine Bradford, Terry Moore and Earl Little Jr. are being thrown into a room that also lost Davison Igbinosun and Lorenzo Styles Jr. at corner. Ohio State's 2025 secondary allowed 130 passing yards a game, but 2026 is less about sustaining that number than about a young, blue-chip-heavy group learning to play at it.
Jayden Fielding's departure after a 104-point season opens the door for Connor Hawkins, who arrives from Baylor having gone 18 of 22 with a 54-yard long in 2025. That's a clear talent upgrade at placekicker over incumbent Marcello Diomede, who has yet to attempt a field goal in Columbus. The punting picture stays stable with Brady Young (69 punts, 42.2 average) and Joe McGuire (29 punts, 42.4 average) both back, so Ohio State's only real turnover question in this unit is settled by the transfer portal, not an open competition.
The talent gutting on defense is the real story here, not the 12-2 season that's already history: Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese and Caden Curry are all gone, stripping out the identity of a group that carried Ohio State through the Big Ten slate. Julian Sayin returns after throwing for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns, and with Carnell Tate and CJ Donaldson also off to the NFL, Devin McCuin arrives from UTSA to soak up targets while Christian Alliegro and James Smith get thrown into a linebacker and line rotation that has to replace nearly all its production. Ryan Day's staff leaned on the portal and a No. 4 recruiting class to patch these holes fast, but the defense is the unit that will decide whether this roster turnover was managed or just absorbed.
Carnell Tate's 875 yards walk out the door, and that pushes even more of the receiving load onto Jeremiah Smith, who already caught 87 balls for 1,243 yards and 12 touchdowns. Julian Sayin threw for 3,610 yards and 32 scores with Smith and Tate both drawing coverage; now Sayin leans on Smith as the singular target defenses design around, with Hunter Welcing needing to give the offense a second option it can trust. How much Smith can absorb against extra attention decides whether this passing game keeps its 2025 form.
Ohio State did not just win last season, it crushed spreads doing it, covering 89% of the time in conference play and 86% at home, the mark of a team that was consistently better than the number Vegas hung on it. That kind of margin says the Buckeyes were rarely tested within Big Ten play, with the one soft spot coming against ranked competition, where the cover rate dropped to 60% even as the record stayed unbeaten in those games. For 2026, bettors should expect the market to price Ryan Day's team closer to its actual talent gap, which means the value likely shifts toward big non-conference and marquee matchups rather than the routine conference favorite spots that printed money in 2025.
