David Braun has built his program on a defense that ranked 23rd in scoring even as the offense limped to 98th, so the real bet on 2026 is whether Chiles can drag that attack into respectability before the defense's margin for error runs out.
Can Aidan Chiles turn a 7-6 team that was actually better than its record into a Big Ten contender? The Michigan State transfer replaces Preston Stone's 2,400 yards and 12 interceptions, and he walks into a roster that returns 93% of its production overall, plus a defense that made opponents earn every point at 16.6 yards allowed per scoring drive. With that much continuity and a conference-play yardage margin the record didn't reflect last season, Chiles just needs to protect the ball better than his predecessor for Northwestern to jump back into contention.
Northwestern's 2026 slate is defined by three road trips it is not expected to survive: at Ohio State (3% win), at Oregon (5%), and at Indiana (6%). Those three alone make the 23rd-ranked schedule brutal, and a middling home slate against Iowa (34%) and Penn State (27%) offers little relief since neither is a coin-flip either. With South Dakota State and Ball State as the only true breathers, David Braun's fourth year projects to 5-7 with just 37% bowl odds, a number that tracks with how few true toss-ups Northwestern actually gets against Big Ten competition.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The 4-5 conference mark hides how good David Braun's roster actually was: against league opponents, Northwestern outgained teams by 17.0 yards per game at a rate that translates to a much better winning percentage than the 44.4% it actually posted. That gap, paired with a turnover margin of -1 that is unlikely to repeat as poorly, points to a step forward in year four rather than a repeat of 4-5. The offense still has to fix the finishing touch, needing 14.8 yards per point against a 14.1 league median, but a defense that made opponents earn theirs at 16.6 yards per point gives Braun a real foundation to build on.
Northwestern's offense was the problem in 2025, finishing 108th in passing yards per game and 116th in points per scoring opportunity despite a defense good enough (19.8 points allowed per game, 23rd nationally) to win a bowl. The fix is Aidan Chiles, in from Michigan State to take over as the 2026 starting quarterback and give David Braun a passing attack with actual answers on schedule-friendly downs, where the line already protects well enough (just 16 sacks allowed, 14th nationally) to let him operate. If Chiles turns that protection and a 42.9% third-down rate into finished drives instead of stalled ones, this defense-carried team finally has enough scoring punch to match its stops.
Preston Stone threw for 2400 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, and Northwestern's answer for replacing him wasn't anyone on the returning depth chart, it was going out and getting Aidan Chiles from Michigan State. That's the move that matters here: a passing attack stuck at 186 yards per game and 108th nationally needed an infusion of arm talent more than it needed continuity, and Chiles arrives as a proven Power Four starter rather than a project. With Ryan Boe's 17 career passing yards and three statless returners behind him, Chiles isn't winning a competition, he's the whole plan for fixing an offense that ranked 116th in points per scoring opportunity.
Caleb Komolafe ran for 941 yards and 11 scores behind a line that gave up just 16 sacks, and Northwestern didn't stop there, adding Florida State transfer Gavin Sawchuk (486 yards, 8 TD) and Bowling Green's Mar'Kel Porter to a room that already returns Joseph Himon II. The move reads less like insurance for departed Cam Porter and Dashun Reeder and more like David Braun stacking bodies at the position that actually worked, since the ground game ranked 64th nationally while the passing attack sat 108th. With Komolafe, Himon and Sawchuk splitting carries, the run game should carry an offense that still needs to find explosive plays anywhere it can get them.
Griffin Wilde's 71 catches and 880 yards prop up a passing game that ranked 108th in the country in yardage, and the drop-off after him is stark, with Hayden Eligon II a distant second at 521 yards. Northwestern didn't chase a portal receiver to change that math, instead betting on 4-star signee Jaden McDuffie and Keaton Reinke to eventually add juice behind Wilde and Eligon. Until those freshmen prove ready, the passing attack still runs through one name, and the 1.18 explosiveness mark suggests defenses can key on Wilde and dare the rest of the room to beat them.
Northwestern's leading tight end production walks out the door with Hunter Welcing (28 catches, 296 yards, 2 TD) and Lawson Albright gone, leaving a receiving void that Robby Preckel, a 149-yard rusher last season, was not built to fill by himself. UConn transfer Alex Honig arrives with real receiving numbers (13 catches, 162 yards, 3 TD) and should step into the passing-game role immediately for an offense that ranked 108th in passing yards per game. With Blake Van Buren, Tyler Kielmeyer, Camp Magee and the rest offering no proven receiving track record, Honig is less a luxury addition than the plug for a passing attack that badly needs more explosive plays than the 108th-ranked mark it posted in 2025.
Sacks allowed sat at 16 last year, a real bright spot for a David Braun offense that still crawled to 186 passing yards per game and 3.21 points per scoring opportunity, 116th nationally. That protection has to be rebuilt largely from scratch, with 10 linemen out the door and only Deuce McGuire, Anthony Birsa and Idrys Cotton among the more experienced names still in the room. Four-star Barrington product Owen Fors headlines an incoming group with Jack Fuchs, Leighton Burbach, Jacob Miller and Owen Jakubczak, and how quickly that mix of newcomers and holdovers gels up front will decide whether Northwestern can push its 161 rushing yards per game higher or keeps bleeding efficiency at 5.45 yards per play.
Aidan Hubbard's 7.5 sacks and Carmine Bastone's 24 tackles walk out the door, leaving a line that already ranked 122nd in tackles for loss searching for answers up front. Michael Kilbane, who posted 7.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks a year ago, becomes the lone proven disruptor, and Northwestern is betting three-star newcomers Jamaal Johnson and Dominic Kirks can add juice off the edge before either has logged a snap in Evanston. Braun's defense held up against the pass a year ago, but until this reshuffled group generates more pressure than 23 sacks worth, that 19.8 points allowed per game figure is vulnerable.
Braydon Brus (81 tackles, 4.5 TFL) is the only proven piece left after Mac Uihlein's 89-tackle production and Yanni Karlaftis both cleared out, and Northwestern went and got Oklahoma transfer Kobie McKinzie to fill the void alongside him. McKinzie's 6.5 TFL in a reserve role at Oklahoma matter more than his modest tackle count, since Northwestern ranked 122nd in tackles for loss and 118th in run-stuff rate a year ago, exactly the kind of disruption this group has lacked. Payton Roth, Jack Sadowsky V and freshmen Max Mohring and Amare Jordan round out a thin depth chart, which makes the Brus-McKinzie tandem the whole ballgame up front.
Robert Fitzgerald's 106 tackles were the engine of a pass defense that ranked 30th in yards allowed per game, and his return alone keeps that identity intact even as Northwestern replaces Garner Wallace and Fred Davis II on the back end. The corner room gets a full makeover with Brenden Deasfernandes arriving from Central Michigan and Montae Pate coming in from Weber State, both bringing actual tackle production to speed up their transition into a rotation that still leans on Braden Turner and Josh Fussell underneath. This is a unit built to keep coverage numbers strong again in 2026, but the 122nd-ranked tackles-for-loss group needs the newcomers creating more disruption behind the line, not just passing-down cleanup.
Jack Olsen's departure leaves a real hole after he hit 18 of 20 field goals last fall, and Northwestern didn't wait around to fill it, pulling Jackson Kleather out of the transfer portal from Bowling Green off a 19-of-22 season with a 56-yard long. That accuracy and range should win him the job over incumbent Henry Helms and 3-star addition Noah Sur, both unproven at this level. The bigger shift is at long snapper, where Michigan transfer Evan Boutorwick arrives to replace Liam Reardon, while Nikola Dugandzic returns at punter without a stat line to lean on.
Preston Stone's 2,400 passing yards walk out the door, but so does the pick-six volatility that came with them, replaced by Michigan State transfer Aidan Chiles as the new starter. Gavin Sawchuk arrives from Florida State off a 486-yard, 8-touchdown season to take over a backfield that lost both Dashun Reeder and Cam Porter, while Kobie McKinzie's 32 tackles and 6.5 TFL from Oklahoma fill the gap left by Mac Uihlein's departure. With 17 transfers in against 8 out, this is less a roster tweak than a rebuild around new faces at every skill spot that mattered a year ago.
Preston Stone's 2400 yards and 17 touchdowns walk out the door, and Aidan Chiles arrives from Michigan State to replace all of it behind a backfield that hardly needs him to do much heavy lifting. Griffin Wilde comes back off an 880-yard season and Caleb Komolafe ran for 941 yards a year ago, so Chiles mostly has to distribute the ball and avoid the interceptions that plagued Stone. If he does that, the run game with Komolafe and new arrival Gavin Sawchuk carries the offense; if he does not, Northwestern's ceiling shrinks fast.
David Braun's group has been a different animal depending on the zip code. At home, Northwestern covered at an 80% clip and went 3-1 against the spread as a favorite, the kind of number that makes Ryan Field a live watch for bettors in 2026. That same team went just 1-2-2 against the spread on the road and 33% as a road underdog, and until that split narrows, the smart line on this program is trust it in Evanston, fade it everywhere else.
