Hawai'i went 9-4 last year with roster talent ranked 120th nationally, and with Micah Alejado back and 70% of production returning, Timmy Chang's group is built to prove that gap was coaching and culture, not a fluke.
Can Micah Alejado make up for losing Jackson Harris' 49 catches, 963 yards and 12 scores without missing a beat? The offense actually finished drives more efficiently than it should have last year, needing just 13.6 yards per point against a 14.1 league median, so a step back in scoring punch is the likelier drag even with Alejado back and 62.9% of the offense returning. The bigger reason to trust him anyway: Hawai'i's conference-game yardage margin ran well ahead of what its win rate showed, meaning this team was better than 9-4 suggested, and Alejado inherits a program still undervalued relative to how it actually played.
A soft overall slate (114th in difficulty) still hands Timmy Chang three legitimate swing games that will decide whether 2026 tops last year's 9-4 mark: at Arizona State, a road trip the numbers make a clear underdog spot, sandwiched around home-and-home coin flips against UNLV and at Stanford. Everything else on the board, San José State, New Mexico State, Sacramento State among them, projects as the kind of should-win game that stacks a bowl bid, and the projection of 8-4 assumes Hawai'i handles those and steals one of the three toss-ups. Split those three close ones and the Rainbow Warriors match last season; sweep them and Chang's group has its best year yet.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The 9-4 mark actually sold Hawai'i short: 70% returning production, Micah Alejado back at quarterback and an offense that scored efficiently on just 13.6 yards per point point to a team built to push past last year's finish, not just repeat it. The one real caution flag is that conference win rate outpaced what the yardage margin supported, meaning some close calls went their way that may not again. Still, with Timmy Chang's group projected 2nd in the Mountain West and an easy schedule (114th-toughest), 8-4 reads like a floor rather than a ceiling for this roster.
Timmy Chang closed year four with a 35-31 bowl win over California and a 9-4 mark, but the deeper number on this page is the efficiency gap: Hawai'i's offense needed just 13.6 yards per point against a 14.1 league median, the kind of finishing-drive knack that rarely repeats twice. That means the floor for 2026 rests more on the defense, which forced opponents to earn theirs at 15.0 yards per point, and on 70% returning production coming back to build on a season that undersold this group. A nearly even turnover margin (-2 over 13 games) suggests little was propped up by luck, so the modest questions here are about repeating an efficient offense, not papering over a flawed one.
Micah Alejado is back as the projected starter after throwing for 3,106 yards and 24 touchdowns, and that continuity is the whole story for a Hawai'i offense that ranked 8th nationally in passing yards per game a year ago. The ground game was never the plan anyway at 126th in rushing, so 2026 is about Alejado and this pass-first attack picking up where a 29 points per game, 44.9% third-down offense left off. The bigger question is cleaning up the 9 interceptions and a sack total of 30 allowed, because the passing volume that makes this offense dangerous also creates the mistakes that erased points in 2025.
Micah Alejado threw for 3,106 yards and 24 touchdowns last fall and comes back as the unquestioned answer at quarterback, not a name in a competition. Hawai'i's passing game finished 8th nationally in yards per game behind him, and with Bjorn Jurgensen arriving from Virginia purely as developmental depth, there's no scenario where anyone but Alejado runs this offense. The bigger question is whether Timmy Chang can build more around him than the pass, since a run game stuck at 126th nationally and 30 sacks allowed put a lot of the burden back on his arm.
Hawai'i's ground game was already 126th nationally in rushing yards per game while Landon Sims quietly piled up 559 yards, and now that production walks out the door with him. Cam Barfield, who ran for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns behind Sims a year ago, becomes the clear lead back, with Kansas State transfer DeVon Rice, who added 94 yards and 3 scores last season, brought in to spell him. This offense lives through the air at 291 passing yards per game, so Barfield and Rice mostly need to keep defenses honest and finish the third-down looks Timmy Chang's passing attack creates.
Pofele Ashlock returns off a 76-catch, 827-yard season as the clear centerpiece, but Hawai'i has to replace Jackson Harris, whose 963 yards and 12 touchdowns paced the room a year ago. That's a real hole given a passing attack that ranked 8th nationally in yards per game, and the answer looks like a numbers game rather than a single heir apparent, with Iowa State transfer Carson Brown, Virginia Tech's Devin Alves and Oklahoma State's Tre' Griffiths all brought in behind Ashlock, Nick Cenacle and Tama Uiliata. Timmy Chang's offense should still throw it plenty, but until one of those newcomers proves he can produce like Harris did, the ceiling on this passing game gets shakier than last year's efficiency numbers suggest.
Devon Tauaefa is back after a quiet 14 catches for 107 yards, and the entire tight end room returns around him with Frank Abreu, Matthew Bailiff, Micah Kaonohi-Kaihenui, Oakie Salave'an and Jeremiah Wright all still on campus without a catch between them on record. That continuity matters less for what the position contributes to a passing game that hit 291 yards per game through the air than for the ground game it needs to help fix, with Hawai'i's rushing attack stuck at 126th nationally in yards per game. Three-star signee Vai Fanuaea joins a group that Timmy Chang will lean on more as blockers than receivers if the run game is going to stop dragging down an otherwise explosive offense.
The line that allowed 30 sacks and produced only 105 rushing yards per game last season stays almost entirely intact, with Erik Atkins, Dean Briski, KT Carter, Boogie Henderson, Judah Kaio and Jordan Kernaghan all back for Timmy Chang's fifth year. That continuity matters most on early downs, where Hawai'i still has to find a run game to pair with a passing attack that ranked 8th nationally in yards per game. The reinforcements are complementary pieces rather than saviors: signee Andrew Price arrives out of high school, while Khalil Walker, Lipe Moala and Cooper Troy join as interior transfers from South Florida, Oregon and Team Alberta, giving Chang competition up front without needing to replace much beyond departed lineman Tautai Li'o Marks.
Hawai'i loses Jackie Johnson III's 6.5 sacks but returns nearly its entire front, and that continuity is the story here. De'Jon Benton (5.5 sacks, 9 TFL) and Lesterlaisene Lagafuaina (7.5 TFL) form a proven interior pair, while Qwyn Williams and Tariq Jones add rotation depth that let this group rank 45th against the run a year ago. West Virginia transfer Adam Tomczyk arrives to push the edge rotation, but the real bet is that a group this experienced finally turns 93rd in tackles for loss into something sharper up front.
Jalen Smith's 54 tackles are gone, but Jamih Otis matched that exact workload himself last fall (54 tackles, 2.5 TFL) and steps in as the clear centerpiece alongside Giovanni Iovino, who added 35 tackles and 3 TFL. Past those two, production craters fast, Alika Cavaco-Amoy, Matteus Ioane, Junior Fiaui and Zaden Mariteragi combined for barely more than a dozen tackles a year ago, which is why three-star Kailua signee Keoki Cypriano matters even with no stats to his name yet. Hawai'i's run defense held up (134 rushing yards allowed per game, 45th nationally), but a run-stuff rate of just 15.8% ranks 116th, and that gap between stopping drives and stopping runs at the line is exactly where this thin linebacker corps gets exposed in 2026.
Peter Manuma's 73 tackles and 2.5 TFL walk out the door, and Hawai'i answers by importing five defensive backs at once, led by four-star UNLV safety Kodi DeCambra and corner Jeremiah Hughes off the Michigan State roster. That's a bet on upgrading a pass defense that gave up 227 yards per game through the air (84th) rather than patching it, while Elijah Palmer's 51 tackles and 6.5 TFL and Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen's 44 stops anchor the returning group. With that much juggling at once, the reps Jaheim Wilson-Jones and Virdel Edwards II log alongside the new arrivals will decide whether this unit tightens up or just reshuffles the same 61st-ranked yardage numbers.
Kansei Matsuzawa's departure leaves a real void, he hit 27 of 29 field goals with a 52-yard long and 121 points, and Hawai'i has no returning stats from either Madden Aquino or incoming Bishop Gorman product Hudson Borsari to suggest who fills it. Punter Sean Olvera-Harle inherits the job from Billy Gowers, whose 46.4-yard average on 48 punts set a high bar with zero track record of his own to lean on. Snappers Jack Mowrey and Nick Pang are the steady hands in an otherwise blank specialist unit heading into 2026.
Nine wins masked how much of that production is walking out the door: Jackson Harris (963 yards, 12 TD) and Landon Sims (559 rushing yards) are both gone, and Micah Alejado now has to spread the ball to a receiving corps built almost entirely from the portal in Audric Harris, Carson Brown and Devin Alves. That's a lot of turnover to trust for a group replacing that much production, but Alejado himself is the stabilizer, coming back off a 3,106-yard, 24-touchdown season with actual chemistry to rebuild rather than a job to win. A 124th-ranked recruiting class means Timmy Chang leaned on the portal, not high school signing day, to reload, and DeVon Rice taking over the backfield from Kansas State is the clearest bet on whether that strategy replaces Sims' production.
With Jackson Harris and his 963 yards gone, Pofele Ashlock inherits the No. 1 receiver job after hauling in 76 catches for 827 yards and 8 touchdowns last season. Micah Alejado threw for 3106 yards and 24 touchdowns with Ashlock as his top target, and how much more Ashlock can absorb from an offense replacing its leading deep threat will decide whether that passing game keeps pace in 2026.
Bettors who backed Timmy Chang's team at home last season got paid, a 7-1 spread mark that included covering four of five games as a home favorite. That number flips on the road, where Hawai'i went just 2-3 against the number as an underdog, and the whole profile points to a team that plays up to its crowd and down to travel. The 4-0 cover mark after a loss is the sharpest signal here, suggesting bettors should expect a response rather than a letdown once this group hits the road for redemption.
