Gerad Parker has to rebuild nearly two-thirds of his production around Crowder with a roster that ranks 99th in talent nationally, meaning Troy's floor next season looks a lot more like its 95th-ranked power rating than its 8-6 record.
Can a defense returning just 29.6% of its production hold up while Gerad Parker leans on Goose Crowder to carry the offense through its own rebuild? The math says no, not right away, since replacing nearly three-quarters of a unit's snaps in one offseason almost never produces continuity, and Troy has no returning cornerstone named at that level to soften the hit. Expect the defense to be the drag on Troy's record even if Crowder keeps the offense respectable.
Troy's projected step back to 6-6 has less to do with regression than with a schedule ranked 113th in difficulty, one that hands Gerad Parker a slew of coin-flip conference road trips instead of the marquee non-conference test that decided last year. The Missouri road trip is a near-lock loss on paper, leaving the season to actually turn on a stretch of true toss-ups: at James Madison, at Utah State, at Arkansas State, and at Louisiana all sit in the same 42-52% band. Troy should handle Sam Houston, Alabama State and UL Monroe at home, but stacking enough wins from that middle tier is what separates another bowl bid from a step back after an 8-6, 6-2 league finish.

Gerad Parker's 8-6 mark with a 6-2 league record looks like a program on the rise, but Troy went 3-1 in one-score games and won at a 75.0% clip in conference play despite yardage margins that only projected a 34.8% rate against those same league foes. That gap points to close-game luck that is unlikely to repeat in year 3, even with 64% of the production back. The offense scored efficiently at 13.1 yards per point, but a defense giving up scores every 15.6 yards is the bigger worry heading into 2026.
Troy won eight games last year despite an offense that ranked 129th in yards per play and let up 59 sacks, and none of that math changes for Goose Crowder in 2026. He threw for 1,327 yards with 11 touchdowns against 5 picks behind that same line, and the explosiveness numbers (39th nationally) show he can hit chunk plays when given a clean pocket, which was the exception rather than the rule. The defense that posted 36 sacks and 86 tackles for loss can keep bailing Crowder out, but until the front five stops bleeding pressure, this offense tops out where it did a year ago.
Goose Crowder takes over as the clear starter after outproducing Tucker Kilcrease in a split 2025 ledger, throwing 11 touchdowns against just 5 picks in his snaps compared to Kilcrease's 9-to-6 mark. The bigger problem for 2026 is what surrounds him: this offense got sacked 59 times and averaged only 4.65 yards per play a season ago, so Crowder inherits a line that has to buy him actual time before his efficiency numbers mean anything. If Troy fixes the protection, Crowder's touchdown rate points to real growth; if it doesn't, he's absorbing the same pressure that limited this passing game to 209 yards per game.
Jordan Lovett's 339 rushing yards last season now look like the foundation of this backfield after Tae Meadows and his 695 yards walked out the door, and Troy's ground game already ranked 131st in rushing yards per game before absorbing that loss. Dennis Palmer and Purdue transfer Jaheim Merriweather give Gerad Parker bodies to spread carries around, but neither arrives with anything close to Meadows' production, and a line that allowed 59 sacks isn't setting up easy yards. Troy's offense leaned on explosive passing (39th nationally in explosiveness) to mask a bottom-40 rushing attack, and unless Lovett takes a real step forward as the workhorse, that imbalance only gets more pronounced in 2026.
Troy loses the entire receiving corps that mattered in 2025, with Peyton Higgins, RaRa Thomas, Tray Taylor, DJ Epps and Roman Mothershed all gone and none of the returning names carrying more than a handful of tackles on the stat sheet. TJ Lott arrives from Old Dominion with 8 catches, 84 yards and a touchdown, modest production but enough to make him the most proven target on the roster, while Dylan Denson and Nick Hampton come in as unproven high school arrivals. With a passing game that already ranked 90th in yards per game and an offensive line surrendering 59 sacks, Lott and whichever of Jywon Boyd or Jah'Marren Jackson can win a job stand to inherit a much bigger role than their track record suggests.
Ethan Conner's 31 catches and 397 yards walk out the door with him, and nobody left in this room has ever produced anywhere close to that. Jackson Worley, who caught just 7 passes for 57 yards last year, becomes the closest thing to a proven option, with Marquis Harris and JT Tang unproven and Fabian Rogosch a blocking-only presence with a single tackle to his name. That's a real problem for an offense that already ranked 136th in sacks allowed and 129th in yards per play, since a line that can't protect needs tight ends who can help in protection or as a checkdown valve, and this group offers no track record of either.
Sixty sacks allowed and a rushing attack stuck at 98 yards per game exposed Troy's front last season, and Gerad Parker did not run it back. Eight linemen are out the door, and the fix arrives almost entirely through the recruiting class, with tackles Corey Dudley Jr., Parks Glaze and Jordon Jones joining interior additions Trinton Pritchett and Aden Jackson to reshape the two-deep. Tyler Cappi is the most experienced holdover by class, but with so much new blood up front, expecting the ugly efficiency and protection numbers to fix themselves in year one is wishful thinking.
Donnie Smith is the whole ballgame up front, coming off 11 sacks and 13.5 TFL while four other linemen who combined to produce far less are gone, including Elijah Davis and Jamel Fils-Aime. Troy leaned on volume pressure last season, finishing 14th in sacks and 16th in tackles for loss as a group, and replacing that depth falls to unproven returners Kam Curry, Jermaine Paramore, Makel Green and RJ Shamberger alongside newcomers August Salvati and Kavion Henderson, both of whom already have sack production on their resumes at San Diego State and Arkansas. The run defense was the weak point at 102nd in rushing yards allowed, and unless Salvati or the incoming freshmen class up front pushes into the rotation fast, Smith could be a one-man show teams simply run away from.
Jordan Stringer's 123 tackles and 11.5 TFL walk out the door, and nobody left in this room comes close to that production, TJ Thompson (44 tackles) and Luke Hodge (42 tackles, 2.5 TFL) posted modest complementary numbers, not lead-dog ones. Boston College transfer Bryce Steele arrives with only 16 tackles of his own, meaning Troy is patching a massive statistical hole with volume of bodies rather than a proven replacement, betting that Thompson and Hodge grow into bigger roles while Steele and fellow newcomer Kendarius Reynolds add depth. That's a real bet given the run defense already sat 102nd in rushing yards allowed per game, this group has to tackle better in space than the departed unit did or that number slides further.
Justin Powe's 75 tackles are the only real volume left in this secondary after Devin Lafayette, Jaquez White, David Daniel-Sisavanh and Kaleno Levine all cleared out, taking most of last year's 34th-ranked pass defense with them. Gerad Parker rebuilt the back end almost entirely through the portal and high school ranks, bringing in Jonathan Pennix from Southern Miss and four incoming corners including Marcus Goree Jr. from Tennessee to pair with returning corner Jabari Strait. With Joe Lott and Jordan Perry the only other proven safeties on the roster, this group's ceiling depends on Pennix and Goree winning outside jobs fast, not on scheme carrying over from a defense that finished 65th in yards allowed per game.
Troy loses its entire placekicking production, with Scott Taylor Renfroe (11 of 16, 72 points) gone, and turns to a three-man scramble to replace him. Jaden Tynes returns with no game stats on file, but the program brought in two transfer kickers, Jalen Ballard from Ole Miss and Ethan Head from West Virginia, to compete for the job, a clear sign Gerad Parker was not comfortable handing it to Tynes outright. Evan Crenshaw, who averaged 45.7 yards on 68 punts, gives the unit its one proven leg while the kicking battle sorts itself out.
Troy sent out far more than it brought in this cycle, and the losses cut deep into production: Tae Meadows (695 rushing yards), RaRa Thomas (629 yards), DJ Epps (498 yards) and Jordan Stringer's 123 tackles are all gone. Goose Crowder returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,327 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he now has to build chemistry with a receiver room remade largely by TJ Lott, a 3-star addition from Old Dominion who caught just 8 passes there. Up front the defense leans on newcomers Bryce Steele and August Salvati to replace lost tackles and sacks, and with a 76th-ranked class doing the heavy lifting, 2026 is about Gerad Parker restocking on the fly rather than picking up where last year's 8-6 team left off.
Troy has two quarterbacks with real starting tape, but the job belongs to Goose Crowder, whose 11 touchdowns against 5 interceptions were the cleaner ledger next to Tucker Kilcrease's 6 picks. With Tae Meadows and his 695 rushing yards gone and Jordan Lovett the lone proven back returning, Crowder cannot lean on the ground game the way last year's offense did, he has to be the one who turns a 6-2 league mark into more possessions actually finishing in points.
Troy went 8-6 straight up in 2025 but 9-4-1 against the number, and the road numbers are the real tell heading into 2026 under Gerad Parker: 6-1 away from Troy with a 5-1 mark as a road underdog. Bettors have consistently undervalued this program on the road even in losses, going 2-0 against the spread versus ranked teams despite dropping both games outright. The one soft spot is bouncing back, at 2-3 against the number the week after a loss, so a Sun Belt road trip following a stumble is where the market finally gets Troy right.
