Missouri State is betting an entire season on Belin translating Duke practice reps into Conference USA production, because a roster ranked 129th nationally in talent and just 26% returning production leaves almost no fallback plan if he needs time to grow into the job.
Can Henry Belin IV run this offense without the guardrails most first-year starters get? Only 20% of offensive production returns, so the receivers, backs, and linemen around him are nearly as unproven as he is, leaving no veteran identity to lean on while he adjusts to Conference USA speed. Expect the offense to lag well behind the defense's 32.6% returning production early, since Belin has almost no experience and the pieces around him won't mask it.
Casey Woods inherits a program with modest projections, but the schedule tells the real story. The trip to Texas A&M is essentially unwinnable on paper, and a visit to SMU offers only a puncher's chance, so the season really turns on the trip to Western Kentucky, a near coin-flip that separates a bowl push from a slide toward 5-7. Missouri State catches a break with Kennesaw State, Marshall and Liberty all sitting at 50-53% at home, meaning the margin for this new staff comes down to winning the toss-up games, not the unwinnable ones.

A 7-6 finish and a 5-3 conference mark hand Casey Woods a flattering starting line for his first full year in charge, but the underlying numbers say sell high. Missouri State went 5-3 in one-score games and posted a better conference win rate than its yardage margin against league opponents actually supports, both classic signs of results that outran the roster. The buy-low case sits on offense, which needed 15.4 yards per point scored against a 14.1 league median and left points on the field, but with only 26% of production back and a defense that let opponents score cheaply at 13.3 yards allowed per point, Woods is more likely inheriting a correction than a launching pad.
Missouri State's offense was a paradox in 2025, ranking 1st nationally in explosiveness per successful play while sitting 105th in success rate and 101st on third downs, a boom-or-bust profile that shredded defenses in chunks but stalled between them. Casey Woods hands that offense to Henry Belin IV, a Duke transfer with only 22 passing yards on his ledger, to replace the departed starter and try to turn big-play flashes into a steadier operation behind a line that allowed 52 sacks. If Belin can protect the ball and cut down the negative snaps, the explosiveness already there makes this offense more dangerous than its 83rd-ranked scoring output suggests.
Jacob Clark's 3,244 passing yards and 28 touchdowns walk out the door, but so does the offensive line's ability to protect him, given the 52 sacks allowed a year ago. Henry Belin IV arrives from Duke to take over an attack that ranked 16th nationally in passing yards per game and posted the most explosive successful plays in the country, a system built for exactly the kind of vertical strikes his arm should provide. The line has to hold up better than it did in 2025, or that explosiveness number becomes irrelevant with Belin on his back.
Shomari Lawrence's 1021 yards walk out the door, leaving a run game that was already 118th in rushing yards per game with no proven ball-carrier on the depth chart. Ramone Green Jr. caught 29 balls for 446 yards last fall and looks like the closest thing to a known commodity, while Iverson Young and King Davis managed just 21 and 13 rushing yards, respectively, hardly a foundation to build on. Boise State transfer Breezy Dubar arrives to compete for real carries, and high school signee Amar'e Johnson joins as a first-year addition, but new coach Casey Woods inherits a backfield that has to be manufactured almost from scratch behind an offense that was 39th in yards per play yet 135th in sacks allowed.
Missouri State's passing attack ranked 16th nationally in yards per game last season, but the two receivers behind that number, Dash Luke and Tristian Gardner, are both gone, along with Ronnel Johnson and James BlackStrain. Jmariyae Robinson (44 catches, 632 yards, 7 TD) is the only proven target left, which makes Tulsa transfer Mekhi Miller and Western Kentucky transfer Isaiah Myers, plus three-star freshmen Deion Thomas and Jerrick Martin, essential pieces rather than depth. New coach Casey Woods inherits an offense whose explosiveness led the country, but replacing that much departed production around Robinson will determine whether the big-play identity survives the turnover.
Jeron Askren's 19 catches and 5 touchdowns walk out the door, and Missouri State replaces that production with a group that has combined for three catches. Dillon Hipp is the only holdover with any receiving stats at all, while Michael Osei-Bonsu, James Rexroat and Vanderbilt transfer Witt Edwards arrive with clean stat sheets. New coach Casey Woods inherits a passing attack that ranked 16th nationally in yards per game, and how quickly Edwards or Hipp can carve out a real role will decide whether that pass-heavy identity survives the losses at tight end.
A line that allowed 52 sacks, 135th nationally, and managed just 114 rushing yards per game, 118th, is the reason Missouri State's passing attack (280 yards per game, 16th) had to bail it out. Casey Woods rebuilds this room almost from scratch, with 8 departures clearing out and five new faces including tackles William Dixon (VMI) and King Large (SMU) brought in to stop the bleeding up front. The returning trio of Makhete Gueye, William Dixon III and Ben Liedtke gives the group some senior presence, but the pass protection and ground game both have to climb out of the bottom third of the country for this offense to hold onto that explosiveness.
Missouri State is rebuilding its entire front, not tweaking it: DJ Wesolak, Mitchell Toney, Ahmad Poole, Tim Brantley Jr. and Davon Townley Jr. combined for the bulk of last year's 53 tackles for loss (120th nationally), and all five are gone. Caden Wiest (2 sacks, 3 TFL) is the lone proven returning piece, so new coach Casey Woods leaned on the portal to reload, bringing in Malachi Madison from Massachusetts and edge rushers Kellen Lindstrom, Maurice Jones Jr. and Dylan Brooks. With that much unproven talent replacing nearly every disruptive snap, a defense that already ranked 99th in yards per play allowed is more likely to take a step back before Woods' newcomers gel.
Kanye Young's 77 tackles and Jalen Brooks' 48 walk out the door, leaving Jared Lloyd as the only proven tackler back after his 76-stop season. Cooper Roy adds a pass-rush element with 2 sacks and 3.5 TFL, but the rest of the returning group (Jashawn Cooper, Austin Yelder, Caleb Olabode, Martavis Blackmon) combined for modest snaps, so UTEP transfer Stratton Shufelt and his 18 tackles arrive as an immediate rotation piece rather than a luxury. Casey Woods inherits a front that ranked 120th in tackles for loss, and until Lloyd gets real help beside him, that TFL problem looks likely to linger into 2026.
Missouri State's back end loses its two leading tacklers at corner and safety in Thomas Anderson and Maguire Neal, but the safety room stays deep with Dylan Dixson (50 tackles, 4 TFL) and Christian Ford (47 tackles) both back to anchor things. Corner is the real question after Ryan Grayson and Floyd Williams both departed, leaving incumbent Darryon Taylor to pair with transfers Joel Kpassou (Duquesne) and Joel Boamah (Kent State), neither of whom arrives with much of a track record. New coordinator or not, a pass defense that already ranked 88th in yards allowed per game is relying on two portal corners to settle quickly rather than a proven returner.
The kicking game is the one unit Casey Woods inherits mostly intact heading into year one. Stewart McDonald returns after booting 49 punts at a 42.7 average, taking over the full workload from departed Anthony Frederique's smaller sample. Yousef Obeid, who hit 14 of 22 field goals with a long of 49 and piled up 79 points, gives Woods a proven weapon rather than a question mark, with Josh Deal behind him as a returning option at the spot.
Jacob Clark's 3,244 yards and Shomari Lawrence's 1,021-yard season are gone, and Missouri State is turning to Henry Belin IV, a Duke transfer with just 22 passing yards on his ledger, to run the offense in Casey Woods' first year. The receiver room takes the bigger hit in volume, with Dash Luke, Ronnel Johnson and Tristian Gardner all departed, leaving Mekhi Miller (9 catches, 58 yards from Tulsa) and Isaiah Myers (2 catches, 43 yards from Western Kentucky) to rebuild the passing game from scratch. With a 131st-ranked class and 19 portal additions patching most every unit, this is a program betting its 2026 identity on transfers gelling fast rather than replicating last year's production.
Casey Woods hands his first Missouri State offense to Henry Belin IV, a Duke transfer with all of 22 passing yards on his resume, replacing Jacob Clark's 3,244 yards and 28 touchdowns outright. Belin inherits a real weapon in Jmariyae Robinson, who caught 44 balls for 632 yards and 7 scores, and how fast that connection clicks decides whether this offense holds anywhere near last year's level or backslides behind a new-look staff.
Missouri State bettors cashed at home last year regardless of role, going 4-2 against the number overall at home and 3-1 when installed as a home favorite, even as the straight-up mark at home sat at a pedestrian 3-3. That gap between actual results and the number Vegas hung on them is the real story entering Casey Woods' first year, since sportsbooks were consistently overrating road opponents coming into that building. The market cooled on Missouri State after losses, with a 2-3 cover mark the following week, so Woods inherits a program the number chases at home but doubts on the comeback.
