Ohio State's Race to Lose

Ohio State sits atop the league as the clear favorite, projected No. 1 nationally and the only team above the rest of the pack. Oregon is the closest thing to a true rival, projected No. 4 nationally, and our preseason numbers send those two back to the title game. Indiana crashes that conversation at No. 6 nationally with the same 10-2 projection as the top two, making this a three-team affair at the top rather than a two-horse chase. Everyone else, from USC and Michigan down through Penn State, Iowa and Washington, projects into the 8-4 to 9-3 range, a full tier back and playing for the chance to crash the door Ohio State and Oregon are projected to walk through.

Balance Over Dominance

Oregon tops the preseason all-conference team with three selections, led by wide receiver Iverson Hooks, tight end Jamari Johnson and linebacker Teitum Tuioti, but three picks is hardly a monopoly. Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Nebraska's Anthony Colandrea headline the offensive skill spots, while Indiana lands two linebackers in Rolijah Hardy and Isaiah Jones and Michigan, Minnesota and UCLA each place multiple players on defense. That spread, with fourteen different programs represented across the two units, says the Big Ten's strength runs through its defensive front and back seven as much as any single power, from Minnesota's Anthony Smith and Maverick Baranowski to the secondary trio of Alex McLaughlin, Mister Clark and Chris Bracy. No team dominates this list, which is the point: the conference's talent is spread wide rather than stacked in one place.

Where the Talent Sits

Oregon is the only program that tops two position rooms, with Dante Moore anchoring the quarterbacks and Teitum Tuioti doing it at linebacker, a spread that points to the deepest overall roster in the league. Ohio State's claim runs through Jeremiah Smith at receiver, while Penn State leans on Benjamin Brahmer at tight end and Iowa on L.J. Phillips Jr. in the backfield. Minnesota's defensive line, led by Anthony Smith, and Northwestern's defensive backs, led by Robert Fitzgerald, show the league's best individual rooms are scattered outside the traditional powers rather than stacked in one place.
