Butch Jones is betting his sixth year on Trey Owens clicking fast, because a roster ranked 88th nationally in talent has almost nothing else proven left on it to fall back on if the Texas transfer needs time.
Does Trey Owens have enough returning pieces around him to make an easy transition, or is he doing it almost alone? With just 36.5% of offensive production back, the answer leans toward alone, and that points to a rough early stretch while Owens and a mostly new supporting cast figure each other out in real games. The defense returning only 23.6% of its production only raises the stakes on Owens playing clean, mistake-free football from day one.
Butch Jones' sixth season lives or dies on three trips: at TCU (13% win), at Memphis (27%), and at Southern Miss (34%). Everything else on the board is winnable, with Georgia State, UL Monroe and West Georgia all sitting at 70% or better, which is how a team ranked 120th in schedule difficulty still projects to 6-6 and 64% bowl odds. Split the road gauntlet even once and the modest slate elsewhere does the rest.

Butch Jones enters year six off a bowl win over Missouri State and a 5-3 mark in conference play, but the underlying number that should worry Arkansas State fans is the yardage margin against league opponents, which pointed to a team that should have won at a far lower rate than it actually did. A minus-7 turnover margin over 13 games is the one place the ledger undersold this group, and that figure is more likely to trend positive than the record is to repeat. With only 30% of production back for 2026 and a power ranking of 107th, the Red Wolves look built for correction rather than a repeat of the 7-6 finish.
Trey Owens arrives from Texas to run an offense that finished 108th in yards per play and 127th in explosiveness, numbers that explain why 25.2 points a game felt like a ceiling rather than a floor. The passing game was actually functional at 260 yards per game, 33rd nationally, but a ground attack stuck at 124 yards a game left Owens's predecessor no margin for third-down or scoring-zone failures, evidenced by a 110th-ranked mark in points per scoring opportunity. If Owens can turn those red-zone trips into touchdowns instead of stalls, Arkansas State's offense stops wasting a defense that racked up 39 sacks.
Jaylen Raynor's 3,364 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door, and Butch Jones replaces him with Trey Owens, the Texas transfer now installed as QB1. Owens arrives with no meaningful throwing log to lean on, but he inherits an offense that already threw for 260 yards per game (33rd nationally) even while the ground game stalled at 124 yards per game and the whole attack ranked 127th in explosiveness. That gap between a legitimate passing operation and a lifeless run-and-explosive-play game is the real 2026 question, and it rides on whether Owens can be more efficient in the red zone than a unit that finished 110th in points per scoring opportunity.
Kenyon Clay and Devin Spencer combined for a modest 523 and 559 yards last season, and neither cracked much explosive production behind a line that helped Arkansas State finish 108th in rushing yards per game and 127th in explosiveness. Both backs return, which matters more for continuity than upside, and Solomon Baggett arrives from Ocean Springs as depth rather than a fix for the bigger problem up front. Butch Jones's offense leaned on its 33rd-ranked passing game to cover for the run, and until that blocking improves, Clay and Spencer project as complementary pieces rather than a unit that can carry 2026 on its own.
Chauncy Cobb (73 catches, 797 yards) and Hunter Summers (44 catches, 505 yards, 4 TD) give Butch Jones a proven top two, which matters because Arkansas State's passing attack ranked 33rd nationally in yards per game despite an offense that graded out explosive-starved at 127th in explosiveness. Joshua Burrell arrives from Furman with 36 catches and 290 yards to add proven volume behind them, while the high school class of Deshaun Fedd, Ty'lan Fortune, Kena Rego and Dallas Boozer is pure projection with no college production yet. The floor here is Cobb and Summers doing the heavy lifting again, with the newcomers determining whether this passing game can turn steady into explosive.
Tyler Fortenberry's 32 catches walk out the door, and no returning tight end comes close to replacing that workload, so Tyler Little (6 catches, 71 yards) and Jabari Bush (10 catches, 70 yards) have to split up a bigger share of a passing game that already ranked 33rd nationally in yards per game. Arkansas State didn't add a portal name at the position, instead banking on three-star Conway product Dawson McFadin and Kansas signee Jaden Hamm to eventually push for snaps, which points to 2026 leaning even more on Little and Bush early. With the offense stuck at 127th in explosiveness, a more featured route-running role for those two tight ends is one of the few obvious levers Butch Jones has to manufacture bigger plays.
Butch Jones went shopping in the portal for his interior after a unit that allowed 28 sacks and managed just 124 rushing yards per game, landing Manasse Itete from Florida State and Landry Cannon from Tulane to reset the middle. Nine linemen are out the door, including Kobe Williams, Chace Stratford and Royce Baucom, so seniors like Cameron Ambrose, Gabe Fortson and Mason Myers carry the experience even though there is no depth chart to confirm any of them actually started. The passing game held up fine at 260 yards per game through the air, but 108th in yards per play says the ground game and protection are what this rebuilt group has to fix in 2026.
Ethan Hassler and Demarcus Hendricks combined to be the pass rush last year, and both are gone, taking 8 and 8.5 sacks with them from a group that racked up 39 sacks and ranked 8th nationally in that category. Ryan Reese is the lone proven returning piece up front after his 12 tackles and 2.5 TFL, while the rest of the returning ends managed only single-digit tackle totals. Shakai Woods arrives from Middle Tennessee with 48 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 7 TFL last season, and Butch Jones needs him to be an immediate three-down force since the run defense already gave up 172 yards a game and finished 96th against the run.
Aaron Alexander and Kyle Taylor combined for the bulk of Arkansas State's stops last season, and both are gone, leaving Nigel Nelson, whose 54 tackles were the only real returning production at the position, to anchor a room that's otherwise being remade with 12 linebackers out the door. Butch Jones went to the portal for help, landing UCF's Kam Moore and NC State's Joshua Ofor alongside Lafayette's Tre Stevens, but none of them arrive with a proven workload, and Robert Stevens is the only other returner with tackles on his resume. The pass defense was the bigger issue anyway, ranked 113th in yards allowed per game, so this group's real test in 2026 is whether Nelson and the newcomers can tighten a defense that gave up 6.13 yards per play a year ago.
Brandon Barnes anchors the back end after a 68-tackle season, but the pass defense that gave up 244 yards per game through the air, 113th nationally, is why Butch Jones went shopping in the portal for corners. Five Hamilton arrives from Kennesaw State off a 38-tackle, 2 TFL season to plug into a group that lost Avante Dickerson and Trenton Alan Yowe at cornerback, while Paul Risper and KeAndre Gibson add competition without prior stats to lean on. Ten defensive backs are out the door in total, but with Barnes, Brandon Greil and Joe Drew all back at safety, this reads more like a corner rebuild than a full teardown, and Hamilton's snaps at his last stop make him the likeliest Sun Belt-ready starter of the newcomers.
The one number that matters here is 21 of 27, Clune Van Andel's field goal clip with a long of 54, and he's back to anchor the kicking game while Arkansas State replaces its entire punting rotation. Jackson Waller's 59 punts at 41.3 yards a kick are gone, leaving the job to incumbent Wells Stanley and Northern Illinois transfer Daniel Vuckovic, neither with a snap on file, which makes this the most uncertain phase of an otherwise settled operation. With Van Andel's leg the lone proven commodity, Butch Jones's specialists are a plus in the kicking game and a question mark in the punting game.
Jaylen Raynor and his 3,364 yards are gone, and so is Corey Rucker's 1,029-yard season, leaving Trey Owens, in from Texas, to run an Arkansas State offense stripped of its top two producers. The defense took the bigger hit in volume, with Aaron Alexander, Kyle Taylor, AG McGhee and Ethan Hassler's 8 sacks all off the roster, so Butch Jones leaned hard on the portal, bringing in Shakai Woods (48 tackles, 2.5 sacks at Middle Tennessee) and Five Hamilton (38 tackles at Kennesaw State) to plug the front seven and secondary. With 37 outbound transfers against 24 arrivals and a 85-ranked class, 2026 reads as a roster rebuilt through the portal rather than reloaded, and Owens' growth will decide how much of that churn actually shows up in the win column.
Jaylen Raynor's 3,364 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door, and Texas transfer Trey Owens inherits the job with no prior stats to lean on. He does inherit a loaded backfield and receiving corps in Chauncy Cobb, Hunter Summers, Kenyon Clay and Devin Spencer, so his learning curve, not a talent gap, decides whether Arkansas State's offense holds steady or slides.
Home is where the market gets it wrong on Arkansas State. Butch Jones's team covered 83% of the time at Centennial Bank Stadium, going 5-1 against the spread even while splitting straight up at 3-3, a gap that says bettors keep overrating whoever this team plays at home. The road tells the opposite story, a 40% cover rate, so the smart lean is fading the Red Wolves away from home and backing them anytime they're favored or catching points on their own field.
