Delaware's roster ranks 133rd nationally in talent yet Ryan Carty's team went 7-6 a year ago, and the number that decides whether that overachievement repeats is 117th, where a defense allowing 31.0 points per game has to find enough stops for Minicucci's returning offense to matter.
Can Delaware's defense hold up with barely half its production back? With 57.7% returning on that side compared to 80.6% on offense, the Blue Hens are counting on Minicucci and the passing game to outscore their own uncertainty up front and in coverage. That gap points to a defense that lags the offense for stretches of 2026, putting more weight on Minicucci and Wilson to win track meets rather than lean on stops.
Delaware's ceiling gets set early by a brutal non-conference sandwich, road trips to Vanderbilt and Virginia where the Blue Hens sit as heavy underdogs both times, so the projected 7-5 season really lives in Conference USA play. The bounce-back test comes at Western Kentucky, a true toss-up on paper, and that game likely decides whether Ryan Carty's group matches last year's 7-6 mark or climbs past it. Everything else, from Merrimack at home to the Kennesaw State and Middle Tennessee swing games, is winnable enough that the Vanderbilt-Virginia-WKU stretch is the whole season in miniature.

Ryan Carty's first year at Delaware produced a 7-6 mark that actually flattered the process less than it looks: a 4-2 record in one-score games is the kind of thing that rarely repeats, and a defense giving up points too cheaply, 13.1 yards allowed per point against a 14.6 league median, is a real soft spot heading into year two. The offense also left points on the board, needing 14.2 yards per point scored against a 14.1 median, so the more encouraging signal is 69% returning production coming back to fix both sides. Carty is early enough in his tenure and coming off a winning season that the raw numbers, not the record, are the more useful guide to where Delaware trends in Conference USA play.
Delaware's identity in 2026 is a lopsided one: Nick Minicucci comes back after throwing for 3,671 yards and 23 touchdowns, anchoring a passing game that ranked 7th nationally, while the ground game limped in at 112th and the defense allowed 31.0 points a game. That gap is the story. Minicucci and the passing attack can outscore almost anybody, but until the run defense or the run-stuff numbers translate into fewer explosive plays allowed through the air, Delaware is stuck trading touchdowns instead of pulling away from Conference USA foes.
Nick Minicucci threw for 3671 yards and 23 touchdowns last season, and Delaware's passing attack ranked 7th nationally in yards per game, so Ryan Carty's offense already has its engine set. The issue is what surrounds him: a ground game stuck at 112th in rushing yards per game and a red zone offense that ranked 89th in points per scoring opportunity capped Minicucci's numbers into a 29.0 scoring average that undersells his arm. With Braden Streeter, EJ Archield Jr., Austin Troyer and Riley Trujillo behind him and no proven backup production to speak of, this offense goes only as far as Minicucci can drag it on his own.
Jo Silver's 652 yards and Viron Ellison Jr.'s 462 give Delaware a proven one-two punch even though the ground game finished 112th in rushing yards per game a year ago. That gap is the real story, this offense won games through the air (292 passing yards per game, 7th nationally) while the run stayed a grind, and Bowling Green transfer Kaderris Roberts adds another option to a room that already has Silver and Ellison established as the workhorses. Ryan Carty does not need to reinvent this group so much as find enough push up front to turn a passing-driven attack into a two-way threat, with Silver as the clear focal point.
Sean Wilson's 66 catches for 850 yards give Delaware a legitimate No. 1 target, and that's a good thing because the room around him got thinner up top with Kyre Duplessis (863 yards, 5 TD) and Jake Thaw (359 yards, 3 TD) both gone. Ja'Carree Kelly and Donovan Lewis both showed flashes in complementary roles last year, but the group needs Coastal Carolina transfer Bryson Graves, who caught 35 passes for 330 yards and 2 TD there in 2025, to be the second real threat that lets a passing attack ranked 7th nationally in yards per game keep humming behind Wilson.
Elijah Sessoms comes back off 22 catches and 2 touchdowns as the clear centerpiece of a tight end group that returns almost entirely intact, with Scott Moore also back after chipping in 46 yards. The only subtraction of note is Connor Witthoft's 9 catches, a loss this passing attack barely needs to notice given it ranked 7th nationally in passing yards per game. Rowen Walsh arrives as a 3-star addition to develop behind Sessoms, but with Jaxson Bowman, Logan Klein, Maddox Sills and Jackson Whitacre all back too, this is a stable, experienced room built to keep feeding a Delaware offense that lives through the air.
Delaware ran the ball for just 119 yards a game (112th nationally) behind a line that lost six pieces, and Ryan Carty went to both the high school ranks and the portal to rebuild it. Jaiden Edwards arrives from Courtland and Mustafa Feika transfers in from Tiffin University to fight for interior spots, while Jack Small, Miles Muldrow and Brandon Truszkowski all join as incoming tackle recruits rather than proven starters. That leaves seniors Patrick Methlie, Steven Demboski and Wahkeem Roman, plus junior Anthony Caccese, as the experienced hands a retooled front has to lean on to protect a passing attack that ranked 7th in yards per game.
Delaware loses its three most productive interior disruptors in Jack Hall (35 tackles, 7 TFL), Keyshawn Hunter (3.5 sacks, 6.5 TFL) and James Yelbert Jr. (2.5 sacks), leaving Dominick Brogna and Trace Scott III to anchor a line that finished 103rd in yards allowed per game and 116th against the pass. Noah Matthews (7 TFL, 2 sacks) is the closest thing to a proven edge threat, but the reinforcements are five unranked or lightly-rated three-stars in Christian Corbin, Sam Siafa, Quincy Smith, Noah Frazier and Collier Book, none of whom carry a college snap. A defense that already ranked just 67th in sacks despite a respectable 80 tackles for loss needs Scott and Matthews to convert more of that pressure into finishes, because the newcomers won't be doing it in year one.
Gavin Moul is the whole story here, a 112-tackle, seven-TFL every-down force who has to cover for a group that lost Marje Mulumba's 7.5 TFL and Dillon Trainer's 2.5 sacks off the edge. Blake Matthews returns with real reps (54 tackles, 3.5 TFL) to flank him, but beyond that the depth chart is Colin Gallagher's limited snaps and unproven bodies in Mekhi Carmon and three-star freshmen Joseph Zamot, Wayne Cunningham Jr. and Demarco Daniels. Delaware's front got to the backfield plenty last season (80 TFL, 34th nationally), and if Moul and Matthews can keep that disruption going while the newcomers grow up fast, the pass defense that allowed 246 yards a game is where 2026 gets decided.
KT Seay's 91 tackles and 5.5 TFL anchor a secondary that gave up 246 passing yards per game (116th) in 2025, and his return matters more than any of the five incoming defensive backs. Delaware brings in a five-man class of Dorian Rutledge, Shawn Church Jr., Trenton Gummer, Jaquise Alexander and Kevin Moore to replace three departed corners with no logged production, betting that fresh legs fix a unit that got gashed through the air. Kshawn Cox Jr. and Jamarion Kolagbodi return at corner with modest tackle numbers, so the passing-game repair in year two under Ryan Carty rests on the newcomers beating out inexperience rather than replacing lost stars.
Nate Reed made 18 of 24 field goals and put up 93 points a year ago, and none of that returns for Delaware, leaving Tucker Smack, a Salisbury University import, to win the placekicking job cold. Brenden Lach's 39.5-yard punting average also walks out the door, but Josh Cupitt is the incumbent at punter and inherits the job outright. With Bodie Frederick and Noah Vitko both back to snap, the operation around Smack is stable even if his own production is a total unknown.
Delaware's passing game loses its top three receivers in Kyre Duplessis, Jake Thaw and Max Patterson, a combined chunk of the 2025 catch total, but Nick Minicucci is back after throwing for 3,671 yards and 23 touchdowns, and he'll need Coastal Carolina transfer Bryson Graves to become a quick focal point in that rebuilt room. The defense took the bigger hit in raw production, shedding Mysonne Pollard, Marje Mulumba and Jack Hall, and the fixes there lean heavily on unproven pieces like transfer safety George Mullins and DL Quincy Smith rather than like-for-like replacements. With a recruiting class ranked 115th and only modest portal splash outside Graves and RB Kaderris Roberts, this is a team betting its returning quarterback can outweigh a defense rebuilt on projection.
Nick Minicucci is back with 3,671 yards and 23 touchdowns, but the man who has to absorb Kyre Duplessis's 63 catches is Sean Wilson, who already posted 66 grabs for 850 yards a year ago. Bryson Graves arrives from Coastal Carolina to soak up some targets, but he caught just 35 passes there, so Wilson becomes the every-down security blanket Minicucci leans on to keep this passing game explosive.
Delaware's 7-6 mark hid a split personality bettors should remember heading into 2026: the Blue Hens went 5-1 straight up at home but bled out to 1-4 on the road, and as a road underdog they covered just once in four tries. That gap is steeper than the overall 38% cover rate suggests, and it points to a Ryan Carty team that hasn't found answers away from its own sideline. Until Delaware proves it can travel, road lines are where the market has the edge, not home ones.
