Talent evaluators still rank TCU's roster 32nd nationally, but only 34% of last year's production returns, so Sonny Dykes is betting that Ivy League pedigree translates faster than the rest of the roster turns over.
Can Jaden Craig run a Big 12 offense with almost no returning weapons or line continuity around him, having never done it outside Harvard? With just 23.6% of last season's offensive production back, TCU is not just trusting a new quarterback but rebuilding nearly the entire supporting cast at the same time, which points to a bumpy, inconsistent first year rather than a smooth transition. Sonny Dykes has navigated quarterback change before, but never with this little proven talent returning around the position.
The projected 7-5 mark says little about how brutal the back half of this slate gets for TCU. Texas Tech on the road is the clear outlier on the schedule, a game the numbers say TCU loses more often than not, and BYU at home plus a trip to Arizona round out a stretch where Sonny Dykes' team is no better than a coin flip. Sandwiched around that gauntlet are winnable spots against Kansas, Kansas State and Utah, so how TCU handles Texas Tech, BYU and Arizona determines whether this season reads as a bounce-back or a step back from 2025.

Sonny Dykes' 9-4 mark leaned on a 4-2 record in one-score games, exactly the kind of close-game luck that rarely repeats. TCU actually won at a lower rate in conference play than its yardage margin against league opponents implied, a neutral read that undercuts any notion this was a breakout year built on real separation. The power rating still lands at No. 38, but 2026 is the year the schedule stops bailing out the close ones.
TCU hands its offense to Jaden Craig, a Harvard transfer whose only note in the box score last year was punting, not passing, which makes his 2026 takeover of a passing attack that ranked 9th nationally a real leap of faith. The ground game was the drag in 2025, finishing 99th in rushing yards per game, so Craig will lean on the same downfield efficiency that produced a 47.4% third-down rate rather than counting on the run to bail him out. Whether that passing infrastructure survives the quarterback change says more about TCU's ceiling than anything on last season's ledger.
Josh Hoover's 3,472 yards walk out the door, and TCU replaces him not with a returning arm but with Jaden Craig, a Harvard transfer whose only listed stat is a 54-yard punting average. That is a leap of faith for an offense that finished 9th nationally in passing yards per game a year ago, but Sonny Dykes is betting Craig can keep the ball moving through the air behind a line that allowed 22 sacks. Jacob Porter, David Potter and Adam Schobel return as unproven depth, which makes Craig's transition the whole story of this offense heading into 2026.
TCU's rushing attack ranked just 99th nationally in yards per game last season, and the group that produced even that modest total is largely scattered, with Kevorian Barnes and Trent Battle both gone. Jeremy Payne, who ran for 623 yards and 5 touchdowns, becomes the clear lead back, with Jon Denman (178 yards, 3 TD) as the proven complement rather than a committee filler. Three-star arrivals Ace Martin, G'Ivori Graham and Landon Walker bring no track record yet, which means the ground game's improvement in 2026 rests almost entirely on Payne taking on a bigger workload behind a passing attack that already ranks 9th nationally.
TCU's passing game loses its top target in Eric McAlister (72-1,190-10) and Joseph Manjack IV (44-579-3), a huge chunk of production for a unit that ranked 9th nationally in passing yards. Jordan Dwyer (54-730-7) is the proven piece now asked to carry the room, but South Alabama transfer Jeremy Scott brings the only other proven volume in the group after posting 24 catches for 417 yards and 4 scores last year. The rest of the receiving corps, from Ed Small to a wave of 3-star freshmen like Khamill Pruitt and Ace Theus, is unproven, so Dwyer and Scott have to produce immediately for TCU's efficient passing attack to hold up.
TCU's tight end room lost nearly all its production, with DJ Rogers (34 catches, 319 yards) and Chase Curtis (13 catches, 167 yards) both gone from a passing attack that ranked 9th nationally in yards through the air. What's left is Lafayette Kaiuway, who caught just 3 balls for 33 yards, Mason Peterson with no catches on record, and 3-star Argyle signee Braden Bach. That's a real void at a skill spot for an offense built on throwing it, and unless Kaiuway's role expands fast, this passing game leans even harder on its receivers and backs to cover for a position with almost no proven hands.
A line that helped average 6.14 yards per play and rank 9th in passing offense last season still returns most of its bodies, with senior Cade Bennett and juniors Ben Taylor-Whitfield, Dylan Kinney and Gannon Gaubert giving Sonny Dykes real continuity up front even after five linemen departed. The lingering issue is on the ground, where TCU's rushing attack ranked just 99th in yards per game, and that is where four-star tackle Vincent Johnson Jr. and Oklahoma State transfer Noah McKinney need to make an immediate physical impact rather than sit as depth pieces. If this group can push the run game closer to its passing numbers, the offense stops being pass-reliant and starts looking complete.
TCU's edge rush loses its whole top end, with Devean Deal (8.5 TFL), Paul Oyewale (7.5 TFL) and Jonathan Bax all gone from a group that already ranked just 76th in sacks. Zach Chapman is the lone returning edge with real production (28 tackles, 1.5 sacks), and Western Kentucky transfer Koron Hayward, who posted 2.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL there, has to be the immediate answer off the edge rather than a project. Inside, Ansel Din-Mbuh's 6.5 TFL anchors a deeper tackle rotation with Markis Deal, Tristan Johnson, Perry Cole Jr. and Connor Lingren back, while blue-chip high school signees Carter Buck and Jesse Ford add long-term juice up front but aren't the players who fix a pass rush that finished 117th against the pass in 2025.
TCU loses the heart of its front seven with Kaleb Elarms-Orr (130 tackles, 11 TFL) and Namdi Obiazor (88 tackles) both gone, and nobody left on the roster comes close to that production. Max Carroll, who managed just 34 tackles a year ago, becomes the clear veteran voice by default, while Virginia Tech transfer Michael Short (22 tackles, 4 TFL) arrives as the closest thing to a plug-and-play replacement for that lost disruption. With Keylan Abrams, Dillon Arkansas and Caleb Cortez all unproven and the pass defense already a weak spot at 117th in yards allowed per game, this group looks thinner than the 9-4 record suggests and is the unit most likely to determine whether Sonny Dykes' defense holds up in year five.
TCU's pass defense was the soft spot last year, giving up 246 yards a game through the air (117th), and the offseason additions target exactly that. Jamel Johnson (96 tackles) and Kylin Jackson (2.5 sacks, 4.5 TFL) anchor the back end again, but the corner room gets an overhaul with Kalen Carroll (49 tackles at Central Michigan) and Teon Parks (Colorado) brought in to replace Avery Helm and Jevon McIver Jr. Jacob Fields arrives from Louisiana Tech with 90 tackles of experience to soften the loss of Bud Clark, and if he slots in quickly, this group should tighten up a pass defense that was the clear weak link in an otherwise middle-of-the-pack unit.
Nate McCashland already did the heavy lifting in 2025, hitting 9 of 12 field goals with a 41-yarder and 69 points, and he heads a placekicking room so deep that Kyle Lemmermann (3 of 3, 33 long) and untested Sam Bisesi and Caleb Sempebwa are fighting for scraps. The bigger swing is at punter, where Ethan Craw's 46 boots at a 41.5-yard clip walk out the door and get replaced by a numbers game rather than an obvious heir. Easton Black has thrown only one punt in his career, so Louisiana Tech transfer John Hoyet Chance, who has actual placekicking experience elsewhere (5 of 8 FG, 55 long), and three-star Southlake Carroll signee Zachary Hays give Sonny Dykes real competition to sort out before this becomes a weak link.
TCU is not just replacing Josh Hoover under center, it is replacing its top two wideouts, both starting backs and its leading tackler. Eric McAlister (72 catches, 1,190 yards, 10 TD) and Joseph Manjack IV (44 catches, 579 yards, 3 TD) are both gone, and South Alabama transfer Jeremy Scott, who caught 24 passes for 417 yards and 4 TD, is the closest thing to a ready-made answer. Kaleb Elarms-Orr's 130 tackles also walk out the door, leaving Virginia Tech transfer Michael Short and Louisiana Tech transfer Jacob Fields to help fill a defense that lost real production, not just headline names.
Josh Hoover threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, and TCU hands the offense to Jaden Craig, a Harvard transfer whose only listed college stat line is two punts for a 54-yard average, not a single pass attempt. That gap between what Hoover produced and what Craig has actually done under center makes him the swing factor, and the good news for him is a supporting cast that does not need him to be Hoover immediately, with Jeremy Payne and Jordan Dwyer both back to carry the load while Craig grows into the job.
Sonny Dykes' fourth season produced a split personality bettors should note going into year five: TCU covered 67% as a home favorite and went 4-2 against the spread at Amon G. Carter, but that same team fell apart on the road, covering just 40% and going winless-with-a-push as a road underdog at 0-1-1. The market has started pricing in the home comfort, so the fade is on the road side, not the venue everyone already respects. Against ranked competition TCU actually covered at a strong clip, 2-1, suggesting Dykes' group shows up when the stakes are highest and sags when nobody's watching on the road.
