Cale Hellums inherits an offense that ranked 94th in scoring a year ago, and with a roster whose accumulated talent sits 134th nationally, Army's 2026 ceiling depends on Jeff Monken squeezing more out of scheme than his personnel would otherwise suggest.
Does almost the entire defense returning finally translate into a unit that controls games, not just holds the line? With 99.9% of production back, Army's front and secondary have the reps and continuity to be the more stable half of this team, and that stability should let Jeff Monken lean on the option and the clock rather than ask Cale Hellums to bail out a shaky defense. The likelier outcome is a 2026 team built defense-forward, with Hellums managing possessions instead of chasing points.
Army's 2026 board is defined by a stretch where the Black Knights are underdogs or coin-flips more often than not, and that's where this season gets decided. The trip to Memphis (35%) and the annual Navy clash at a neutral site (38%) sit as true toss-ups the roster projects to lose more often than win, with the home date against Tulane (37%) forming the third leg of that gauntlet. A 92nd-ranked schedule and a 6-6 projection suggest Jeff Monken's group, in year 13, is built to split those coin-flip games rather than sweep them, which is exactly why the 69% bowl odds feel about right instead of a lock.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The 7-6 mark understates what Jeff Monken's group actually did, and the defense is the reason to believe it. Army's offense only needed 14.1 yards per point scored, matching the league median exactly, while the defense forced opponents to grind out 15.9 yards per point, bending without breaking all year. That gap between an offense running at league-average efficiency and a defense making teams earn every score is unlikely to hold in reverse, and with 91% of the production back, year 13 should look sturdier than last season's record suggested.
Cale Hellums returns as the established option quarterback, and the numbers explain exactly why Army will run it back again: 255 rushing yards per game (4th nationally) alongside just 81 passing yards per game (136th) is not an accident but the entire offensive identity. That imbalance capped Army at 5.00 yards per play (119th) and 1.16 on the explosiveness scale (125th), so the bet for 2026 is whether Hellums, who threw for 694 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in his snaps, can turn enough of those third-and-manageable looks into chunk plays to lift an offense stuck at 23.8 points per game. The line stayed clean at just 7 sacks allowed, so the pieces to protect Hellums are there, it is the explosive plays that have to show up for this offense to look different than last year's.
Cale Hellums runs Army's option offense again in 2026, and the numbers make clear why the passing game is almost incidental here, 81 yards a game through the air, 136th nationally, next to a rushing attack that ranked 4th at 255 yards a game. Hellums threw for 694 yards with 4 touchdowns against 3 interceptions last fall, modest totals that matter less than his ballhandling and decision-making in an attack built to protect him, evidenced by just 7 sacks allowed, tops in the country. Dewayne Coleman gives Jeff Monken a game-tested change of pace behind him, but the plan for 2026 is simple: let Hellums manage the mesh point and let the ground game, not the box score, carry the offense.
No single back carries this backfield, and that is the point of Jeff Monken's system. Hayden Reed (335 yards, 3 TD) tops a four-man rotation with Briggs Bartosh (254 yards), Carson Smith (231 yards) and Jake Rendina (187 yards) all back, giving Army the No. 4 rushing attack nationally even while the passing game ranked 136th. The three incoming backs, Kaio Oliveira, Farad Green and Broxton Robinson, are depth additions behind an already crowded room, and the real driver of 2026 stays the same: keep grinding out that ground-and-pound identity since nobody else on the roster threatens to throw it downfield.
Army's receiver room is a name in a stat column only in the loosest sense, and that fits an offense built to throw 81 yards a game. Brady Anderson's 14 catches for 381 yards paced the returning group and Samari Howard adds a bit more volume, but the real churn is five incoming names, Jake Hickox, Jayden Seay, Kymani Nua, Matthias Taylor and Joelle Arnett, with zero recorded production, arriving into a passing game that ranked 136th nationally. The bigger loss isn't a receiver at all but Noah Short's 571 rushing yards, a reminder that in this triple-option attack the ground game (4th nationally) will keep determining whether anyone in this receiver room ever needs to matter.
In Jeff Monken's option attack, tight end has always meant blocking first, and the numbers back that up: Army ran for 255 yards a game (4th nationally) while throwing for only 81 (136th). Parker Poloskey is the only tight end with any receiving production on the books, just 4 catches for 54 yards and a score, and the room around him (Tex Brannan, Charles Daly, Brian Dyer, Abram Edwards, Josh Greer) is defined by blocking assignments rather than targets. Newcomers Mason Mixon, Jack VanProoyen and Trenton Curliss arrive into a group that exists to spring the fullback and slotbacks, not to fix a passing game that ranked 136th in the country.
Only one lineman, Josh Manecke, is actually gone, and the numbers he leaves behind are absurd for a unit anyone would call vulnerable: seven sacks allowed all year, tops in the country, powering a rushing attack that churned out 255 yards per game, fourth nationally. Jeff Monken keeps almost the entire room intact behind seniors Braden Bartosh and Tanner Bivins, and the newcomers, headlined by 3-star interior lineman Maverick Diede and tackles Jaxon Newton and Xavier Obiero-Hyter, are depth additions rather than fixes for a broken group. The bigger question for 2026 is whether this line can turn its dominant push into more explosive plays, since the offense still ranked 125th in explosiveness and 110th in total yards despite all that continuity up front.
Army's back-end numbers look respectable, but the front six-man rotation returns almost fully intact without ever generating pressure, and that gap is the real story here. Jack Bousum's 3.5 sacks and 7 TFL are the closest thing to disruption this group had, while Jack Latore's 37 tackles came with just 1 TFL, a sign this line eats blocks more than it wins them, which lines up with a defense that finished 132nd in tackles for loss and 125th in sacks. Five incoming linemen, led by 3-star Dominic Basrawala, arrive to add bodies, but until someone beyond Bousum starts consistently getting into the backfield, Army's defense stays built to hold yardage down rather than force the negative plays that flip games.
Andon Thomas piled up 112 tackles a year ago but only 4 TFL, and that gap between volume and disruption defines this group heading into 2026. Kalib Fortner (7.5 TFL) and Eric Ford (4.5 sacks, 8 TFL) are the closest things to playmakers back, but with the defense finishing 132nd in tackles for loss and 125th in sacks last fall, Army needs one of them or a newcomer like Phillip Goodrich to start winning snaps behind the line rather than just cleaning up after the fact. All three top tacklers return, so the group's floor is fine, but the low havoc numbers say the ceiling stays capped until someone besides Thomas starts making splash plays.
All three starting safeties are back, and that continuity is the real story here. Collin Matteson (79 tackles), Casey Larkin (69 tackles, 3 TFL) and Gavin Shields (57 tackles, 2.5 TFL) give Army a settled back end even as the corner room gets an influx of five newcomers, led by Nic Curley and Brooks Dupree, to push Jaydan Mayes, Cole Searight and Justin Weaver. The pass defense was legitimately good in 2025 at 190 yards allowed per game (27th nationally), and with that safety trio intact, the bet is this group holds that form even if the corner spots shuffle.
Dawson Jones is the steadying piece here, having made 15 of 20 field goals with a long of 48 and 80 points on the season, and Army's kicking picture runs through him again with Charlie Barnett, Anderson Britton and Andrew Astone all back as depth options. The bigger question is at punter, where incoming freshman Grant Horvath arrives from Cosby with no college numbers yet, pushing into a competition that also includes returning punter Cooper Allan. Snapper Owen Walter returns as well, so the continuity is real even if the punting job itself is unsettled heading into 2026.
Army skipped the portal market entirely, zero transfers in against two out, and leans instead on a 181-ranked class built to fit Jeff Monken's option scheme rather than flip a roster overnight. Cale Hellums returns as the established quarterback after a 694-yard, 4-touchdown season, and this offense is his now, with Noah Short's 571 rushing yards the biggest chunk of production to replace on the ground. This is a program betting on continuity and internal development over reinforcement, which tracks with year 13 of the same coach running the same system.
Army ran the option through Noah Short's legs last fall, and with Short gone and zero portal help arriving to fill that void, the 2026 attack now rests on Cale Hellums, who threw for 694 yards but also 3 interceptions in his look last season. Andon Thomas and Kalib Fortner give this defense a stable core at linebacker, but with a 181st-ranked recruiting class and no reinforcements from the portal, Monken's offense has no margin for Hellums to repeat those turnover issues.
Jeff Monken's team was a road revelation and a home disaster in 2025, going 5-1 against the spread away from West Point while covering just once in five tries at home, an 0-4 mark specifically as a home favorite. That split flips the usual script for a program built on controlling its own building, and it means bettors should treat any 2026 home line with more skepticism than the record alone suggests. The response after a loss (5-1 against the spread) shows a team that regroups fast, but until that road/home gap closes, the value keeps pointing away from West Point.
