Tony Sanchez enters year three with a roster ranked 130th in talent and only 35% of last season's production back, so New Mexico State's power rating of 129 reads less like an outlier than a fair reflection of where this program actually sits.
Can Trey Hedden hold the job for sixteen games and turn a 2-4 mark in one-score games into wins instead of losses? The Aggies replace Logan Fife's 2,232 yards with only 29.8% of the offense back, but a 4-8 record undersold this group, given how close their conference losses actually were and how their yardage margin in those games points to a better win rate than they posted. Hedden does not need to be spectacular, just steadier in the fourth quarter than Fife's 12 interceptions allowed, and the numbers say that alone tips several of those close games the other way in 2026.
Tony Sanchez's roster sits with a 107th-ranked schedule, but the real gauntlet is stacked early and often: a trip to Florida State gives New Mexico State just a 4% shot, and a road date at Hawai'i (16%) follows before New Mexico comes to town at 27%. Everything in between, Sam Houston on the road at 51%, Middle Tennessee at 45%, Liberty and Jacksonville State at home in the high 30s, looks winnable enough to matter for bowl math, with projections pegging this group at 4-8 and 19% bowl odds. The margin between last year's mark and this year's projection is thin, which means those three low-probability tests aren't just measuring stick games, they're the difference between treading water and taking a step.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The projection sits at 4-8 with only a 19% shot at a bowl, and nothing in the schedule rank of 107 or the eighth-place conference forecast argues for more than that. Hedden gives New Mexico State a proven arm, but a roster this thin elsewhere caps the upside rather than raising it. Bank on a season that hovers around break-even at best, with a bowl bid the exception rather than the expectation.
Tony Sanchez heads into his third year off a 4-8 finish that included a 2-6 mark in Conference USA, and the power ratings back up the eye test, slotting the Aggies at No. 129 nationally. That combination of on-field results leaves little margin for another slow start in league play. The roster turnover ahead of 2026 matters more than the record alone, since New Mexico State has yet to show it can win the close conference games that separated a middling season from a bad one.
Trey Hedden comes back after throwing for 2,967 yards, and that arm is the reason this offense stays viable in the passing game (45th nationally). But the run game was a sinkhole at 77 yards per game (136th), and until New Mexico State finds a ground threat to pair with Hedden, defenses will keep sitting on his throws and choking off the third-down rate that actually worked in 2025. The bigger drag is scoring once inside range, a middling 3.21 points per opportunity that needs to climb for Hedden's volume to translate into wins instead of another 21.6-point average.
Trey Hedden threw for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, but 13 interceptions and a line that allowed 34 sacks kept New Mexico State stuck at 4.75 yards per play, 127th nationally. With Logan Fife gone and Hedden entrenched as the guy, the passing game (45th in yards per game) already outstrips the rest of the offense, which ranked 123rd in success rate and 136th on the ground. The 2026 story is whether Hedden can trim the turnovers enough for that arm talent to actually translate into points, since New Mexico State scored just 3.21 points per scoring opportunity, 114th in the country, with him running the show.
A run game that managed just 77 yards per game (136th) needed a jolt, and Tony Sanchez went and got one in James Jones, who ran for 958 yards and 9 touchdowns at Delaware Tony Sanchez inherits the early-down work from a stable of returners, Dijon Stanley (297 yards) and Isaiah Rudison (158 yards), who split duty behind a line that allowed 34 sacks last season. Kadarius Calloway's 450 yards are gone, but Jones arrives with a heavier workload already proven, and if he simply repeats it, this becomes the most productive lead back New Mexico State has had in years.
Donovan Faupel's 61 catches and 7 scores walk out the door, and New Mexico State replaces that volume by committee rather than with one name. TK King (41-588-3) becomes the clear top target, with Brodie Malone-Bradford and TJ Pride rounding out a returning corps that still combined for well under Faupel's output alone. The portal additions are lower-ceiling than splash: Lyndon Ravare arrives from Kennesaw State with modest numbers (21-237-1), and Devin Ellison and Myles Libman bring only a handful of catches each from Washington State and Stanford. A passing game that ranked 45th nationally in yards per game last year now leans on King to carry more of the load behind a line that allowed 34 sacks.
Gavin Harris' 36 catches walk out the door, and New Mexico State replaces that entire tight end passing game with a transfer, not a returner. Josiah Thomas arrives from Western Carolina with 28 catches and 3 touchdowns already on his resume, a real upgrade in production over anyone left on this roster, since Ray Lotten managed just 3 catches a year ago and Duke Frye, Joshua Goines and Jerry Lydiatt bring no stat history at all. With a passing offense that already ranked 45th nationally in yards per game but stayed stuck at 123rd in success rate, Thomas becomes the readymade chain-mover this group has lacked.
Thirty-four sacks allowed and a 36.7% success rate tell the real story of 2025, and Tony Sanchez responded by clearing out most of the room, with eight linemen gone including Elijah Harvey, BJ Tolo, Kai Wheeler, Santos Valdez and Florian Staehler. Five transfers arrive to rebuild it from scratch, led by Armond Owens from Grambling, Tyler Keinath from Boise State and James Williams from UTEP, joining Luke Moise and Mark Chapman. Seniors Hayden Harlan and Evan Blaettler give this group some experience to lean on, but with no depth chart clarity and that much churn up front, New Mexico State's 77 rushing yards per game and 127th-ranked yards per play won't fix themselves until this rebuilt unit gels.
Ezra Christensen's 5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss walk out the door, and nobody left on the edge has more than Brad Vislisel's 2.5 tackles for loss to show for it, which is exactly how a line that managed only 18 sacks in 2025 ended up there. The fix is imported rather than developed: Vic Shaw arrives from UTSA with 20 tackles and Kaian Roberts-Day follows him from the same roster, while Jeremiah Sandiford and unproven names like Jordan-Lebron Downey and Jamaun Thompson fill out the depth behind Gabe Peterson's 32 tackles. Getting from 113th in sacks to respectable up front means Shaw has to be an actual difference-maker on the edge, not just a body replacing one.
Sone Aupiu is the anchor here, and he has to be given the group around him is largely unproven. Tory Gethers and his 87 tackles are gone, along with Tyler Martinez and Quincy Davis, wiping out most of the tackle production behind Aupiu's 68 stops and 5.5 TFL. Zaiden Davis returns with modest experience, but Chance Barron, Jason Freeman Jr., Fa'apaia Fualema and Nathan Wallin all arrive with no prior stats, and 3-star signee Jaylyn Manning adds a fresh body rather than instant answers, leaving Aupiu to carry a defense that ranked 100th in tackles for loss and 113th in sacks last season.
The safety room still runs through Nick Session (61 tackles, 2.5 TFL) and Bernock Iya (53 tackles, 3 TFL), but New Mexico State loses Naeten Mitchell's 92 tackles and Armahn Hale's 44, a chunk of production the staff tried to replace by importing Cincinnati transfer Tayden Barnes rather than leaning on an unproven backup. Cornerback is thinner on returning stats, with Josiah Charles (28 tackles) and Lorenzo Smith (18) holding the outside spots while transfers Javon Gillespie and Amaurey Brooks and true freshman De'Marcus Peters get folded into a pass defense that ranked 103rd in yards allowed per game. That secondary overhaul matters most on passing downs, where 2025's back end got exposed, and it will decide whether this defense climbs out of the bottom third nationally in yards allowed or repeats it.
New Mexico State overhauled its kicking game rather than trust it to internal growth. Ryan Hawk's 70 points and David Barker's perfect 3-of-3 sample get replaced in the pecking order by Ilya Uvaydov, who arrives from Utah Tech having hit 15 of 19 field goals with a 55-yard long and 66 points, a track record that outweighs what Barker showed in limited attempts. The bigger void is at punter, where Max Dean's 55 boots at 42.3 yards leave with him, and Minnesota transfer Brody Richter steps in with zero collegiate numbers on file, making him the unit's biggest unknown for 2026.
New Mexico State's 4-8 mark buried the real story: a 2-4 record in one-score games and a yardage margin in conference play that actually beat the win rate it produced, both signs this group was better than its finish. Logan Fife is gone, but Trey Hedden, who threw for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns, takes over as the settled starter and gives Tony Sanchez a real building block on offense. The skill-position turnover is heavy, with Donovan Faupel and Gavin Harris departed and James Jones, Lyndon Ravare and Josiah Thomas arriving from Delaware State, Kennesaw State and Western Carolina to replace that production, while Vic Shaw and Tayden Barnes join a defense that must replace Naeten Mitchell and Tory Gethers up front and at safety.
Trey Hedden already threw for 2,967 yards last season, so the swing piece is James Jones, the Delaware State transfer brought in to give New Mexico State a ground game it lacked. Dijon Stanley managed just 297 rushing yards in 2025, and if Jones's 958 yards and 9 touchdowns translate against Conference USA fronts, Hedden stops carrying the offense alone.
New Mexico State's numbers straight up and against the spread tell two different stories: a 4-8 season on the field but dead-even 6-6 for anyone betting the number, with home and road markets both landing at exactly 50 percent. The one clean red flag is as a home favorite, where the Aggies went 0-2 against the spread, meaning Tony Sanchez's team has consistently failed to protect a number when Las Cruces expects a win. Bounce-back spots have been the more reliable angle, with a 4-3 cover mark the week after a loss suggesting the roster responds better to lowered expectations than to being favored.
