Tim Albin is rebuilding almost from the ground up with only 35% of production returning, and the fix for a defense that gave up 36.3 points a game and an offense that managed just 14.3 will have to come from whichever unknowns fill those voids, not from anyone who already proved it here.
Can Cole Gonzales function behind a unit that returns only 46.4% of its offensive production, with Javen Nicholas and his 60 catches gone from the passing game? With almost no proven weapons around him and a defense returning just 24.3% of its production likely to leak points early and often, Gonzales is going to be asked to operate in obvious passing situations far more than a first-year transfer starter should. That imbalance, not the quarterback change itself, is what makes 2026 a rebuilding year in Charlotte rather than a step forward.
Coming off a 1-11 debut under Tim Albin, Charlotte's 2026 slate offers a soft floor but no obvious signature win, with the projected 4-8 mark leaning on the UAB trip (46%) and a home date with Louisiana (41%) rather than anything resembling an upset. The trip to Ole Miss is a lost week by design, and home games against Tulane and East Carolina, both under 25% to win, are the real measuring sticks for whether Albin's rebuild is actually gaining ground or just padding a light nonconference slot against The Citadel. Bowl eligibility at 11% tells the story plainly: this is a season about building depth and identity, not chasing December.

A jump from one win to four is real progress, but a 13th-place finish in the American and just an 11% bowl projection put a hard ceiling on year two. Charlotte's schedule ranks 77th in difficulty, which means the four-win mark is earnable without a signature upset, not a springboard to a surprise run. This is a floor-setting season for Tim Albin, a year to bank on Gonzales stabilizing the offense rather than to expect a leap past the projection.
A winless conference slate and a No. 126 power rating are the honest floor Tim Albin inherited, not a verdict on where this program sits entering his second year. The 2025 tape showed a roster that couldn't compete in American Athletic play, and closing that gap starts with whether the pieces Charlotte adds for 2026 can hold up week to week rather than get overwhelmed early like last fall. Year two is about building a foundation that shows up in the conference record, not just the overall one.
Every number on this card points the same direction: Charlotte was one of the worst offenses and defenses in the country in Tim Albin's first year, ranking 133rd in success rate on offense and 134th in havoc rate on defense, and there is no hidden strength to build around. The answer at quarterback is Pittsburgh transfer Cole Gonzales, who threw for just 118 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his limited look last season and now inherits an offense that managed only 2.73 points per scoring opportunity, 131st nationally. Fixing the run defense, which allowed 200 yards per game on the ground, matters more for 2026 than anything Gonzales does through the air, because a defense that lets 53.9% of opponent plays stay on schedule will bury any offensive improvement before it shows up in the record.
Charlotte's passing game produced 14.3 points a game a year ago, so the program went to the portal and installed Cole Gonzales, the Pittsburgh transfer, as the 2026 starter over a room that includes Grayson Loftis (1415 yards, 8 TD, 8 INT) and Conner Harrell. Gonzales arrives with modest numbers of his own, 118 yards on 1 TD and 1 INT, but the bar he clears is low, an offense that ranked 133rd in success rate and 131st in points per scoring opportunity. The bet is that a healthier veteran presence at the position, not raw upside, is what turns third downs and red zone trips into points this time.
Charlotte's rushing attack finished 135th in yards per game, and the answer wasn't running backs, it was replacing them wholesale. Rod Gainey Jr. (260 yards) and Cameren Smith (220) are both gone, leaving Jariel Cobb (190 yards) as the only back with meaningful carries on the roster, and the staff went to the portal three times over to fix it. Khamani Alexander and Chance Williams arrive with modest production of their own from App State and Cincinnati, while D'Mariun Perteet joins from Coastal Carolina as the higher-rated addition, but none of them has proven he can move the needle behind a line that allowed a 34.2% success rate on offense.
Charlotte's leading returning receiver caught 5 passes last year, so the 2025 group that produced a 204-yard passing average and just 14.3 points per game is essentially being replaced wholesale. Cam Pedro (65 catches, 814 yards at Southeast Missouri State), Jaden Barnes (55 catches, 608 yards at App State) and Zyheem Collick (35 catches, 670 yards at Bryant) arrive with more combined production than the entire returning room, and all three should start immediately. If that trio clicks with whoever throws them the ball, Charlotte's passing attack has a real shot at climbing out of the bottom tier it occupied a year ago.
Charlotte's offense scored 14.3 points per game and ranked 133rd in offensive success rate a year ago, and the tight end room adds real juice rather than replacing it. Logan Mauldin arrives from McNeese with 26 catches for 341 yards and 2 touchdowns, a bigger workload than any tight end on last year's roster produced, and Lane Wadle joins from Georgia State with 9 catches for 92 yards. Gus McGee returns off 14 catches for 127 yards and a score, giving Charlotte a proven target alongside Mauldin as it tries to fix a passing game that still finished 94th in yards per game.
Tim Albin inherits a front that allowed the 82 rushing yards per game and 4.62 yards per play numbers to sink Charlotte's offense to 134th in scoring, and with 13 linemen gone he had to go shopping in the portal to fix it. J'ven Williams (Penn State) and Mathias Nielsen (Virginia Union) arrive to compete at tackle, with Cody Taylor, Luke Sandy and Jake Allen brought in for the interior, while seniors Isaiah Bullerdick, Nic Cruji and Omarion Davis are the most experienced holdovers from a group that could not protect or move anyone. Given how much of that talent walked out the door, this is a rebuild up front, and the transfer haul needs to win jobs immediately rather than simply add depth behind the returning seniors.
A line that produced just 14 sacks and 48 tackles for loss, ranking 125th and 127th nationally in those categories, loses its two most disruptive tacklers in Xavier Miles and Braden Mullen. Jamarrion Solomon, who paced returners with 29 tackles and 3.5 TFL, becomes the clear anchor, flanked by Jaylon Johnson and Caleb Irving as the only other holdovers with real snaps. Charlotte leaned on three-star additions like Devin Ancrum and edge Colin Bussey to restock depth, but with a havoc rate that sat 134th nationally in 2025, this group needs Solomon to be disruptive from day one rather than develop into it.
Charlotte's front seven bled production this offseason, losing Shay Taylor, Reid Williford and Gavin Willis, a group that combined for double-digit tackles for loss and most of the pass rush behind a defense that ranked 125th in sacks. Kadin Schmitz, who logged 65 tackles, is the lone proven piece in a room otherwise stocked with unproven names like Will Estes, Leo Housel-Rajacich and three-star arrivals La'Trell Sellers, Mikey Domanik and Gray Patterson. With the unit replacing nearly all its disruptive tackles behind the line, expect the run defense that allowed 200 yards a game to bend again before Schmitz and the newcomers find their footing.
Charlotte replaces nearly half its secondary production, with Randy Franklin (58 tackles) and Cary Grant (45 tackles, 2.5 TFL) gone from a group that let opponents stay on schedule 53.9% of the time and post a 272-yard passing average against. CJ Clinkscales Jr. (49 tackles) and Collin Gill (35 tackles, 1 TFL) anchor what returns, but the reinforcements are five unproven true freshmen, Josh Hines, Alchino Blakely, Jameel Croft Jr., Maddox West and Chase Usher, none of whom have played a snap yet. A back end that ranked 131st in passing yards allowed needs Clinkscales and Gill to carry the coverage load while those freshmen catch up, and that is not a safe bet for immediate improvement.
Charlotte loses Liam Boyd and his 9 of 12 mark on field goals, and neither Charlie Birtwistle nor Aiden Bui carries any track record to suggest who fills that void. The clearer answer sits at punter, where Bronson Long returns after booming 70 punts at 42.7 yards a kick, giving a 1-11 team at least one special-teams weapon it can lean on to flip field position. Pittsburgh transfer Henry Searcy steps in at long snapper behind an unproven place-kicking room, and until one of Birtwistle or Bui proves reliable, close games could keep tilting against a program still hunting its first conference win under Tim Albin.
Charlotte didn't just lose games in 2025, it lost its entire skill-position identity, and the fix is a wholesale import job rather than internal reload. Javen Nicholas, Sean Brown and E. Jai Mason are all gone after combining for real production, replaced by a trio of transfer receivers in Cam Pedro (65 catches, 814 yards at Southeast Missouri State), Jaden Barnes (55 catches, 7 TD at App State) and Zyheem Collick (35 catches, 670 yards at Bryant) who arrive with more combined output than what walked out the door. Cole Gonzales, in from Pittsburgh, is the man throwing to them after a modest 118-yard, 1-TD debut, and with a defense that lost both of its top tacklers in Reid Williford and Ja'Qurious Conley, this offense's new weapons will have to outscore Charlotte's problems rather than lean on a rebuilt defense.
Charlotte handed the job to Cole Gonzales, a Pittsburgh transfer who threw for just 118 yards with a 1-to-1 TD-to-INT mark in limited work, over returnees Grayson Loftis and Conner Harrell, both of whom threw more interceptions than touchdowns last season. His fit with new arrival Cam Pedro, who caught 65 balls for 814 yards at Southeast Missouri State, has to replace the production Javen Nicholas took with him, or this offense stalls again behind an 0-8 conference mark.
Charlotte went 1-11 last year but somehow turned a heavier profit as a road underdog, covering four of five true road games including a perfect mark against ranked opponents, while a 1-5 home cover record made Jerry Richardson Stadium the trap for bettors backing Tim Albin's team. The split is stark enough to matter for 2026: this is a roster that competes when nobody expects it to and unravels when the line says it should win, and until that flips, fade Charlotte at home and back the number on the road.
