Florida Atlantic sits 82nd in roster talent nationally but a power rating of 115, and that gap traces straight to a defense that allowed 36.3 points per game, a unit Zach Kittley cannot outscore his way past even with Veltkamp running the offense.
Does Caden Veltkamp have enough around him to turn last year's chaos into a coherent offense in Zach Kittley's second year? With Jayshon Platt's 46 catches and 720 yards gone and only 67.4% of offensive production back, Veltkamp is walking into a rebuilt group of targets rather than a proven one. The likelier outcome is growing pains through the non-conference slate before the passing game finds its rhythm, since a full receiving corps rarely replaces itself that fast even with a settled starter at quarterback.
Florida Atlantic's schedule ranks 90th in difficulty, and the roster's ceiling shows up in the middle of that slate rather than at the top or bottom. The Owls have no shot at Florida (4%) and face long odds at East Carolina (20%) and at Army (31%), three games that will decide whether Zach Kittley's second year clears the projected 5-7 mark. The rest of the board is winnable but not comfortable, with South Florida at home (31%) and North Texas on the road (32%) sitting right alongside those marquee tests as the difference between bowl eligibility and another losing season.

Zach Kittley's debut in Boca Raton produced a 4-8 record, a 3-5 conference mark, and a power rating stuck at No. 115, numbers that reflect a program still finding its footing rather than one making a leap. The offense-first system Kittley built his name on has a full offseason and a second training camp to install deeper, which matters more here than the record does. A first losing year under a new staff is a common growing pain, and the bar for 2026 is straightforward: translate that installed system into conference wins that the record so far has not shown.
Caden Veltkamp threw for 3,652 yards behind an offense that ranked 1st nationally in passing yards per game, and that arm talent is why FAU can score with anyone even after a 4-8 finish. The problem was never moving the ball, it was everything after, a run game stuck at 123rd, a red zone that settled for 3.49 points per opportunity, and a minus-21 turnover margin that torched every big play Veltkamp created. If Zach Kittley's group finds a ground threat to pair with him and stops giving the ball away, this offense already has the passing punch to carry a defense that gave up 36.3 points a game.
Caden Veltkamp threw for 3,652 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, and FAU's offense led the country in passing yards per game behind his arm, so Zach Kittley builds year two around a quarterback who already has the job locked down. The 17 interceptions and a 36.8% third-down rate are the real ceiling on this offense, not who lines up under center. Backups Jordan Magwood and Michael Valentino, plus transfer Drew Devillier, exist purely as insurance behind a QB1 who threw it more than anyone in the nation.
Kaden Shields-Dutton's 460 yards and 6 scores were the lone bright spot in a ground game that finished 123rd in rushing yards per game, and with Xavier Terrell and 465-yard rusher Gemari Sands both out the door, he becomes the clear centerpiece rather than a complementary piece. Zach Kittley's offense does not need the run to carry it, given the nation's No. 1 passing attack, but it needs Shields-Dutton to be efficient enough on early downs to keep from bleeding into that miserable 36.8% third-down rate. Fairmont State transfer Leonard Farrow and JUCO addition Brady Tillman III arrive with no college stats to lean on, so this room's ceiling in 2026 still runs through what Shields-Dutton can do behind an offense built to throw first.
Easton Messer put up 100 catches and 1,029 yards in Zach Kittley's pass-heavy offense that led the nation in passing yards per game, and he alone makes this room dangerous again in 2026. But the second option is gone with Asaad Waseem's 69 catches and 726 yards off the roster, leaving Dominique Henry (40 for 575) to grow into a true No. 2 and Bowling Green transfer RJ Garcia II (27 catches, 283 yards) to add an immediate outside body. The passing game was elite last year while the run game sat 123rd nationally, so expect Kittley to keep leaning on Messer and Garcia to mask that imbalance rather than fix it.
Zach Kittley wiped out the tight end room entirely, and every name at the position for 2026 arrived via the portal or high school. Antonio Johnson brings the most proven receiving résumé, hauling in 20 catches for 231 yards and 5 touchdowns at Villanova, while Brooks Johnson adds a smaller but real body of work from Coastal Carolina (11 catches, 87 yards, 1 TD). None of that outproduces departed Michael Kirch's 15 catches and 3 scores, but in an offense that finished 1st nationally in passing yards per game, even a modest receiving tight end slots into a proven system built to find him.
Zach Kittley's line produced the nation's 1st-ranked passing attack (341 yards per game) behind a shaky ground game that managed just 105 yards on the ground, 123rd nationally, so pass protection carrying a run-blocking problem is the story again in 2026. Eighteen linemen return against five departures, led in experience by juniors Ja'Kavion Nonar, Michael Unis and Okino King, but none of that trio has a documented starting role, so the run-blocking fix may come from outside additions like tackles Alejandro Schmitt, a high school signee out of West Broward, and Georgia Tech transfer Benjamin Galloway. With sacks allowed already respectable at 21 for the season, the bigger swing stat is the 96th-ranked third down rate, and whichever combination up front finally establishes a run threat will decide if this offense stops settling for 3.49 points per scoring trip.
FAU's run defense bled 201 yards a game and ranked 126th in run-stuff rate a year ago, so Zach Kittley went shopping for pass rushers rather than run stoppers. Jay Crable arrives from Ohio with 6 sacks and 8 TFL already on his résumé, and TCU transfer Jonathan Bax adds another body who has played meaningful snaps, joining a returning front of Deshaun Batiste (4 sacks) and CJ Doggette Jr. (6.5 TFL). The bet is that fresh edge speed fixes a unit that finished 89th in sacks, but nothing in this group profiles as the interior presence needed to solve a run defense that was 122nd nationally.
Leon Hart Jr.'s 83 tackles and 5 TFL were the lone bright spot behind a run defense that gave up 201 yards a game on the ground, and losing Tyler Stolsky's 86 stops leaves Hart without his co-anchor. Khmari Johnson and Zyere Horton both return with modest tackle numbers, but neither profiles as a true replacement for Stolsky's volume, and Kansas transfer Joseph Sipp Jr. arrives with just 3 tackles to his name. Until someone beyond Hart proves he can consistently get off blocks, FAU's run-stuff rate (122nd) is the number that will keep defining this defense.
Florida Atlantic lost its top two tacklers in the secondary, Dillion Williams (62 tackles) and Chris Keys Jr. (47 tackles), and answered by signing four unproven corners and safeties, JK Johnson from Oklahoma State, Sean Williams, Ja'Cari Jackson and Justin Weatherall, none of whom carry meaningful tackle production into 2026. Jayden Sweeney (41 tackles) and Damarius McGhee (30 tackles) are the only real returning volume behind them, which matters given a unit that allowed 235 passing yards per game (99th) and finished 132nd in points allowed. Chris Tooley III and Damon Allen provide some corner continuity, but this group is leaning on freshmen and transfers to fix a back end that gave up too many explosive plays a year ago.
Garrison Smith's 84 points and 16 of 19 field goals walk out the door, and Zach Kittley answered by importing both specialists rather than promoting from within. Collin Rogers arrives from SMU having made just 1 of 3 kicks with a 43-yard long, a shaky sample for a team that needs points off the foot. Reed Chandley steps in at punter from Georgia State with 54 punts and a 45.8 average, an upgrade on departed Logan Lupo's 44.9 mark, while Alex Grace and long snapper Walker Adkinson return to anchor the operation around the new leg.
Florida Atlantic gutted its receiving corps, waving goodbye to Jayshon Platt (46 catches, 720 yards) and Asaad Waseem (69 catches, 726 yards), the two players who did the most damage through the air last season. Caden Veltkamp, who threw for 3,652 yards and 24 touchdowns, returns to run the offense, but he now hands the ball to newcomers RJ Garcia II and tight ends Antonio Johnson and Brooks Johnson to replace that lost production. With 30 players out the door and a recruiting class ranked 130th, the defense leans on transfers Jay Crable and Jonathan Bax off the edge to stabilize a unit that lost tacklers Tyler Stolsky and Dillion Williams, making this a Veltkamp-or-bust season for Zach Kittley's rebuild.
Veltkamp threw for 3,652 yards but also 17 picks, and that ratio is the whole 2026 equation for FAU. He has Easton Messer, who caught 100 balls for 1,029 yards, and Dominique Henry back outside, so the volume and the weapons are already in place. The only question left is whether Veltkamp tightens up his decision-making, because a talent-thin roster that ranked 130th in recruiting cannot survive him giving games away again.
Zach Kittley's team lost more than it won straight up in year one, but the number lied all season long, going 7-5 against the spread while going just 4-8 on the field. That gap is starkest as a home favorite, where Florida Atlantic covered all three chances, and after a loss, when the Owls covered five of seven, suggesting a roster that competes closer than its record than bettors gave it credit for in 2025. The road numbers are the real problem entering year two, with a single win in six true away tries, and until Kittley's group solves that split, the cover streak means more than the record.
