Kentucky's roster carries the 27th-best pedigree in the country, yet Will Stein inherits an offense that finished 101st in scoring, a gap that only 27% returning production will make harder to close in year one.
Can an offense returning just 13.2% of its production find any rhythm behind a new starter and a new play-caller in Will Stein? The most likely path is a rocky, turnover-prone first half of the season, since Kenny Minchey arrives with almost no game reps and the skill-position cast around him is largely unproven, leaving Stein to lean on the defense's steadier 39.9% returning core while the offense grows up on the job.
Will Stein takes over a program handed the No. 4 hardest slate in the country, and the calendar offers almost no soft landing beyond Youngstown State and South Alabama at home. The season gets defined on the road, at Texas A&M and at Oklahoma, where Kentucky is projected an underdog in both, and a home date with Alabama sits right alongside them as the toughest test in Lexington. Split those coin-flip games against Vanderbilt, Florida and Louisville and the 5-7 projection holds, but any real step forward for Stein runs through beating one of the three heavyweights on the schedule.

Will Stein takes over a program coming off a 5-7 finish that included a 2-6 slide through SEC play, but the underlying number that matters more for 2026 is the No. 40 power rating still attached to this roster. That gap between last year's league record and the talent on hand is the whole story here: this was not a team that got outclassed, it was one that underperformed what it had. Year one for Stein means installing his own system on a roster built for someone else, and the standard for 2026 is simply closing that distance between results and ability.
Kenny Minchey, projected to start after arriving from Notre Dame, steps into an offense that ranked 128th nationally in explosiveness and 112th in yards per play a year ago, meaning the quickest fix for Will Stein's first season is manufacturing chunk plays that simply weren't there. The bigger issue sits on the other side of the ball: a defense that stuffed runs well enough (53rd) still allowed 240 passing yards per game, 105th nationally, and a minus-8 turnover margin, 117th in the country, has to flip before Minchey's efficiency numbers mean much. This is a program searching for explosive plays and takeaways at once, not just a new arm under center.
Kentucky cleared out the entire room that produced 2160 yards from Cutter Boley and threw 238 more from Zach Calzada, betting instead on a total reset behind Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey. Minchey, who threw for 196 yards there, is the projected starter taking the first-team reps this offseason, but the job isn't locked, with Matt Ponatoski and JacQai Long both in camp to push him. Whoever wins it inherits an offense that ranked 128th nationally in explosiveness and 112th in yards per play, so the ceiling for 2026 depends on Minchey turning a broken passing attack into something that stresses defenses vertically, not just moves the chains.
Kentucky wiped out its entire 2025 rushing production this offseason, sending 725-yard back Seth McGowan and 560-yard Dante Dowdell out the door and leaving Jason Patterson (225 yards, 1 TD) as the only proven returning carry. Will Stein rebuilt the room almost entirely through the portal, headlined by CJ Baxter from Texas and Jovantae Barnes from Oklahoma, plus high school addition Delvecchio Alston II. None of the newcomers bring big college workloads, so this is a group defined by fresh faces replacing lost volume rather than proven backs stepping into a system that ranked just 86th in rushing yards per game and 128th in explosiveness a year ago.
Kentucky essentially rebuilt this room from outside the roster, since none of its top three producers from a passing game that ranked 96th in yards return. DJ Miller's 175 yards are the only meaningful returning production, so the group now runs through Shane Carr, who caught 47 passes for 655 yards at Southern Utah, alongside UAB's Xavier Daisy and LSU transfer Nic Anderson. That's a lot of new faces replacing known quantities like Hardley Gilmore IV and J.J. Hester, and with the offense stuck at 1.15 in explosiveness (128th nationally), Will Stein needs Carr to produce at SEC speed immediately rather than serve as a projection.
Willie Rodriguez's 23 catches were the only real production this group had in 2025, and with Josh Kattus gone, new offensive coordinator-turned-head coach Will Stein has to build a passing game around him almost from scratch. Henry Boyer adds a modest complementary piece, but Elijah Brown, Justin Kattus and Mikkel Skinner arrive with no catches on record, and 3-star signee Lincoln Watkins is a developmental add rather than an instant answer. An offense that ranked 128th in explosiveness last season needs Rodriguez to become a bigger vertical threat, not just a possession option, for Stein's system to open up.
Will Stein inherits a line that allowed 29 sacks and posted an explosiveness mark of 1.15, good for 128th nationally, so the overhaul in front of him is less a tweak than a teardown. Nine linemen are out the door, and Stein answered by raiding the portal for four blue-chip transfers up front, tackle Lance Heard from Tennessee and guard Tegra Tshabola from Ohio State among them, alongside Coleton Price from Baylor. With that much proven size walking in and the departed group carrying whatever cohesion this line had, 2026 is a wholesale rebuild up front, not a return of a strength, and Kentucky's offense (which limped to 5.13 yards per play, 112th nationally) needs the new arrivals to hit immediately.
Will Stein didn't touch the back seven's biggest problem in the portal, he rebuilt the trenches instead, and the numbers explain why: Kentucky's pass defense allowed 240 yards per game (105th) while the run defense held up fine at 135 (46th). Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace (31 tackles, 3.5 sacks) and Tavion Gadson (2.5 sacks) return as the interior anchors, but the reinforcements up front are all edge rushers, South Alabama's Tyler Thomas and Hoover product Justyn Hartley, brought in to generate pressure a unit with only 25 sacks badly lacked. Purdue transfer Jamarrion Harkless adds another proven disruptor at 2.5 sacks, and if that trio speeds up the pass rush, it fixes the coverage numbers by shrinking the time quarterbacks get rather than asking the secondary to cover longer.
Grant Godfrey's 34 tackles and Lorenzo Cowan's 2.5 sacks are the closest thing to proven production left in this room, and that is a problem given Daveren Rayner and Alex Afari Jr. combined to do far more damage before leaving. Will Stein is left leaning on Sam Greene and Cedric Works to fill the gap while Texas transfer Elijah Barnes, who posted a sack and a TFL in 2025, brings the only real outside reinforcement. A defense that already ranked 105th against the pass and 93rd in havoc rate cannot afford this much turnover at the second level and expect the numbers to hold.
Kentucky's pass defense was the soft spot last year, 105th in passing yards allowed, and the offseason overhaul in the secondary is aimed squarely at that. Ty Bryant (76 tackles) anchors the back end, but the cornerback room turns over hard behind him with four-star transfer Andre Clarke Jr. from Hermitage and high school signee Isaiah McMillian brought in to fix a group that lost Jonquis Hardaway and Quay'sheed Scott. Florida transfer Jordan Castell arrives with 54 tackles of experience to pair with Terhyon Nichols, giving new coach Will Stein at least one proven safety while the corner spots get sorted out on the fly.
Kentucky's kicking picture is crowded rather than uncertain. Jacob Kauwe made 13 of 17 field goals with a long of 51 in 2025 and returns as the incumbent, but the staff added South Florida transfer Adam Zouagui, giving Will Stein a real competition at the position rather than a hole to fill. Punting stays steady with Thomas O'Hara back after a 43.8-yard average on 52 punts, replacing departed punter Aidan Laros' near-identical numbers with barely a drop-off, while Wilson Berry gives the room added depth.
Cutter Boley, Seth McGowan and Dante Dowdell all took their production out the door, wiping out the bulk of Kentucky's 2025 skill-position touches under new coach Will Stein. Kenny Minchey, the Notre Dame transfer who threw for just 196 yards in limited action, is projected to run the offense, and he will lean on a retooled receiver room built from three transfers, Shane Carr (47 catches, 655 yards at Southern Utah), Xavier Daisy and Nic Anderson, none of whom caught a pass in Lexington last fall. Defensively the losses of Daveren Rayner and Alex Afari Jr. get patched with portal additions Dominic Wiseman and Tyler Thomas up front, but this is a roster built almost entirely around newcomers proving themselves in new places.
Cutter Boley's 2160 yards and 15 touchdowns walk out the door, and Kenny Minchey, projected to take over after arriving from Notre Dame with all of 196 career passing yards, is the swing piece for Will Stein's first Kentucky team. DJ Miller and Willie Rodriguez give him proven targets, but a first-year staff running a first-time starter through the SEC schedule is the whole equation here. If Minchey plays even steady, not spectacular, football, Kentucky's returning pieces on defense and at receiver have a shot to matter.
The number that matters here is the split: Kentucky covered 57% at home but only 20% on the road, and went 1-3 against the spread as a road underdog. That gap traveled with the losing record to ranked teams, an 0-5 straight-up mark that also produced a 2-3 cover rate, so oddsmakers never found the right number for Kentucky against the SEC's better teams. Will Stein takes over a program that was live at Kroger Field and lost in a soft way everywhere else, and until that road number moves, the market will keep treating Kentucky as a home-only bet.
