With CJ Bailey back as the established quarterback, NC State's talent floor (45th nationally) is well ahead of a defense that gave up 27.2 points a game and ranked 83rd in scoring defense, meaning this season comes down to whether Bailey can outscore a unit that still has to prove it can get stops.
Can a defense returning just 36.9% of its production tighten up fast enough to back CJ Bailey and a rebuilt backfield? Dave Doeren has churned rosters before in his 14th year, but replacing this much on that side of the ball in one offseason is a steeper climb than swapping skill-position pieces. Expect the growing pains to show early, with the unit trailing the offense's continuity for much of 2026 before the newcomers settle in.
NC State's schedule sits near the middle of the pack in difficulty, but the season turns on three true road trips where the Wolfpack are underdogs or dead even: at Florida State (31%), at Vanderbilt (31%) and at Virginia (34%). Layer in a trip to North Carolina (41%) and a home date with Louisville (42%), and Dave Doeren's group could easily be 2-4 or 5-1 in those five games depending on how the margins break. A middling 76% bowl projection reflects that volatility more than any single measuring-stick opponent, since the rest of the slate, from Richmond at home to Wake Forest and Duke, sets up as manageable.

The efficiency numbers say NC State's 8-5 mark flattered a team that needed just 13.0 yards per point on offense against a 14.1 league median, the kind of finishing touch that rarely holds up two years running. Dave Doeren's group also went 2-1 in one-score games, another sign of a season that broke well rather than one built to repeat, and in conference play the actual win rate outran what the yardage margin against league opponents would have predicted. None of that erases a 14th-year coach with a top-51 power rating heading into the ACC slate, but the honest read on 2026 is regression, not another jump.
CJ Bailey comes back after a 3,105-yard, 25-touchdown season, and the explosive-play numbers behind him back it up: NC State ranked 13th nationally in explosiveness and 8th in points per scoring opportunity, evidence this offense wastes almost nothing once it crosses midfield. The problem sits on the other side of the ball, where a defense that allowed 413 yards a game (111th) and 273 through the air (132nd) has to find answers without a signature pass rush, given just 20 sacks on the year. With Bailey's efficiency locked in, 2026 comes down to whether Dave Doeren's defense can trim that yardage gap enough to stop outscoring itself.
CJ Bailey threw for 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, and NC State didn't bother touching the position this offseason beyond adding depth in Tad Hudson and Jacob Smith. That continuity matters more than any card on this page shows, since an offense that already ranks 13th nationally in explosiveness and 8th in points per scoring opportunity just kept its trigger man instead of breaking in someone new. The 9 interceptions are the lone blemish worth watching, but with Bailey back and Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren entering year 14, this is a passing game built to take another step rather than rebuild one.
Hollywood Smothers and his 939 yards are gone, but Jayden Scott already outproduced him in touchdowns last fall with 595 yards and 4 scores, and this backfield is his now. North Carolina transfer Davion Gause, who ran for 258 yards and 3 touchdowns elsewhere, gives Doeren a proven complement rather than a projection, while three-star signees Dylan McCoy and Noah Moss add depth without any pressure to play early. The bigger question is the room in front of them, since NC State's rushing attack ranked just 81st in yards per game a year ago despite an offense that finished 8th nationally in points per scoring opportunity, meaning Scott and Gause need to convert what the passing game and red-zone efficiency already set up.
NC State lost its top three producers at receiver in Terrell Anderson, Wesley Grimes and Noah Rogers, so Dave Doeren went to the portal for volume rather than trusting an internal reload. Victor Snow arrives from Buffalo off a 62-catch, 815-yard season and instantly becomes the most proven target on the roster, with Tyran Warren (Alcorn State) and Davion Dozier (App State) adding ready-made complementary production. Teddy Hoffmann and Keenan Jackson return as the only holdovers with real receiving numbers, which means this group's ceiling depends on how fast Snow, Warren and Dozier sync with the quarterback rather than on continuity.
Justin Joly's 49 catches and 7 touchdowns walk out the door, and NC State turned to the portal rather than its own room to answer for it, with Preston Douglas, Ian Flynt and Gus Ritchey combining for a single career catch between them. Hunter Provience arrives from Montana State having caught 11 passes for 135 yards and a score, and he projects as the clearest replacement for Joly's role even if the production gap is real. Tex Vaughn, Vander Ploog and Stephen Brown add bodies but no track record, so this position group's 2026 identity gets written almost entirely by a Montana State transfer inside an offense that already ranked 13th nationally in explosiveness.
Dave Doeren is replacing nine linemen off a group that allowed 24 sacks and managed just 147 rushing yards a game, and the exits include departed tackle Jacarrius Peak, so the shape of this front changes significantly. Fifteen linemen return, led in experience by seniors Henri Paris, Kamen Smith, Rico Jackson, Rylan Vann and Teague Andersen, but none of that group carries stats that confirm who actually started, so this reads as a rebuild rather than a returning strength. NC State layered in tackles Brody Smith, Tre Aiken, Jimarion McCrimon and Brady Sakowitz plus interior lineman Daniel Cruz to restock the room, and how fast that mix gels up front will decide whether the 6.11 yards per play and 41.2% third-down rate from 2025 hold up.
NC State loses the production that actually did the work up front, with Sabastian Harsh, Brandon Cleveland and Travali Price all gone after combining for the bulk of the line's sacks and tackles for loss on a defense that already ranked 132nd in passing yards allowed. Chase Bond (5.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks) is the only proven returning disruptor, and Marshall transfer KaTron Evans arrives with 11 tackles and 1.5 TFL to plug the interior gap, while a run of three-star newcomers in Damaad Lewis, Elijah Satchell, Harvey Dyson and Carmelo McKenzie carry no game production yet. With so little returning juice and a group ranked 105th in sacks last season, 2026 is a rebuild year for generating pressure, not a step forward.
Caden Fordham's 143 tackles and 9.5 TFL walk out the door along with Kenny Soares Jr. and Cian Slone, gutting the production of a group that already allowed 273 passing yards per game a season ago. Harvey Dyson III becomes the centerpiece by default, his 7 sacks and 10 TFL the closest thing to a proven difference-maker, while Popo Aguirre's 43 tackles offer stability but not much disruption behind him. Three-star arrivals Ziggy Moore, Caleb Gordon and Jordan Moreta give Dave Doeren bodies for 2026, but with none of them tested yet, this unit's coverage problems look more likely to linger than disappear.
A pass defense that gave up 273 yards a game, 132nd nationally, loses its top corner in Devon Marshall and gets almost no juniors-college fix from the portal aside from King Mack, a 58-tackle safety pulled from Penn State. Asaad Brown Jr. (64 tackles) and Jackson Vick anchor the corner spots while Ronnie Royal III holds down the back end, but the reinforcements are four unproven true freshmen safeties in Jordyn Best's class, none with a snap of college tape. NC State is betting its returning starters can mask a coverage unit that ranked 132nd against the pass rather than expecting instant help from Raleigh's incoming class.
Kanoah Vinesett hit 5 of 6 field goals with a long of 51 and piled up 63 points, and his job security next to Nick Konieczynski (1 of 3, 29 long) makes this the easiest call on the roster. The bigger swing is at punter, where Caden Noonkester's 43.4-yard average walks out the door and NC State goes to the portal for Jackson Doeren, who averaged 41.3 yards on 59 punts at Dave Doeren inherits a full-time job, not a competition, and the drop from Noonkester's number to his own is the one field-position wrinkle worth watching in 2026.
NC State gutted its skill positions this offseason, and the story is whether CJ Bailey, back after throwing for 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns, can make an almost entirely new supporting cast work. Hollywood Smothers, Terrell Anderson, Justin Joly and a trio of departed wideouts are all gone, replaced by a wave of transfer pass-catchers in Victor Snow (62 catches, 815 yards at Buffalo), Tyran Warren and Davion Dozier, plus Davion Gause taking over the backfield. That's a lot of unproven pieces around a proven passer, and with Caden Fordham also departed from the front seven, this team's ceiling now rests on how fast Bailey builds chemistry with a receiving corps that has never caught a pass from him.
Hollywood Smothers is gone, but the real swing piece is Victor Snow, the Buffalo transfer who caught 62 balls for 815 yards and 8 touchdowns last season and now has to become CJ Bailey's primary target. Bailey threw for 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns behind Teddy Hoffmann's modest 349-yard season, so Snow raising the receiving ceiling is what turns Bailey from efficient to explosive.
NC State bettors made money at home and lost it everywhere else in 2025, and that split is the whole story for 2026. Dave Doeren's crew covered five of seven at home, including a 3-2 mark laying points as a favorite, but went 0-4 against the number as a road underdog and 1-4 against the spread away from Raleigh overall. Until that road number changes, the smart play is simple: back the Wolfpack in Carter-Finley and fade them on the road, especially if they show up as an underdog again.
