Maryland's roster carries the 52nd-ranked talent in the country yet finished 4-8 and 77th in scoring defense, so the eighth-year Locksley has run out of grace-period excuses for a program with more horses than this on the depth chart.
Can Malik Washington turn a full season of starts into fewer giveaways and more wins? With 68.5% of the offense back and Shaleak Knotts' 44 catches now needing a replacement target, Washington has the surrounding continuity to clean up the mistakes that sank Maryland's 2025 season. The most likely path is incremental progress, not a leap, since the receiving corps around him is still rebuilding rather than reloaded.
Maryland's season turns on a stretch of true toss-ups rather than the road trips to Ohio State (3% win) and USC (12% win), which are effectively lost before kickoff. Home dates with Virginia Tech (40% win), Illinois (43% win) and Wisconsin (47% win), plus a trip to Purdue (49% win), are the actual proving ground, and going even 2-2 through that group is what separates bowl contention from another losing conference mark. At 26% at Nebraska and 26% against Penn State, Locksley's group is not expected to spring a marquee upset, so the projected 5-7 season really is decided by how Maryland handles the teams it can beat.

Mike Locksley has been in College Park long enough to build the program his way, and 2026 is about whether that long runway finally shows up in the standings after a 4-8 season that bottomed out at 1-8 in Big Ten play. A No. 61 power rating says this roster is not nearly as far off as that league record suggests, which puts the onus on Locksley to turn competitive Big Ten games into wins rather than close losses. Eight years in, the excuse of a rebuild still in progress gets harder to lean on.
Malik Washington threw for 2,963 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, yet Maryland finished 100th in offensive success rate and 100th in points per scoring opportunity, proof that a productive passer can't fix a stalled ground game and empty red-zone trips by himself. The rushing attack that managed just 106 yards per game (122nd) is the real drag on this offense, and unless that number moves, Washington's arm numbers will keep outpacing the scoreboard. A +7 turnover margin bailed out an offense that couldn't sustain drives, but that kind of luck is not a plan for 2026.
Malik Washington's 17 touchdowns against 9 interceptions last year sit oddly alongside an offense that ranked 100th in success rate and 100th in points per scoring opportunity, a gap that says the issues around him were bigger than his own play. Maryland didn't chase a transfer arm to unseat him, instead layering in Cardell Williams and Devin Kargman as depth behind a passing game that finished 35th nationally even as the run game stalled at 122nd. With Washington entrenched and protection already strong at just 9 sacks allowed, the swing factor for 2026 is whether Locksley's staff can turn all those Washington completions into actual points.
Maryland's ground game was the problem in 2025, ranking 122nd in rushing yards per game, and the backfield turnover does not scream fix. DeJuan Williams (501 yards, 3 TD) returns as the clear lead back, but Nolan Ray's 289 yards and 2 scores are gone, replaced by USC transfer Harry Dalton III, who managed just 44 yards last season, and Temple's Terrez Worthy, whose value is as a pass-catcher out of the backfield with 74 yards on 6 catches. With Iverson Howard's 125 yards the only other proven rushing production on the roster, Williams has to carry a heavier load for an offense that already ranked 100th in success rate and 100th in points per scoring opportunity.
Maryland gutted its receiving room and rebuilt it almost entirely through the portal. Jalil Farooq and Shaleak Knotts, its top two producers in 2025, are both gone, and Kaleb Webb's 22 catches are the most any returning wideout can claim. In come Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (51-667-6 at Old Dominion) and Chris Durr Jr. (46-513-4 at Wyoming), who project as the immediate one-two punch and have to be better than league-average right away given a passing game that was already a bright spot at 35th nationally while everything else on offense stalled near triple digits.
Dorian Fleming's 40 catches and 351 yards were one of the few reliable pieces in a passing game that ranked 35th nationally even as the offense stumbled to 95th in scoring, and Maryland doubled down by piling four more bodies onto the depth chart. Auburn transfer Preston Howard arrives with actual production (10 catches, 84 yards) to pair with Fleming, while three-star signees Javonte Williams and Damon Hall Jr. add long-term stock behind AJ Szymanski, who chipped in 5 catches and a touchdown. With Leon Haughton Jr. gone, the position is deeper and more experienced than a year ago, and Fleming's return gives Locksley's offense a proven target to build around while it tries to fix a rushing attack stuck at 122nd nationally.
Only nine sacks allowed and 256 passing yards per game masked a run game that managed just 106 yards on the ground, 122nd nationally, and a third-down offense that converted at 36.6%. The room protecting that passer stays mostly intact, with seniors Aaron Folivi and Isaiah Wright among the returners, while Tellek Lockette arrives via the transfer portal from Texas State to compete inside alongside high school signees Day'Jon Moore, Jesse Moody and Jonathan Panagou. With 16 linemen back against just two departures, Mike Locksley's bet is that continuity finally turns explosive passing plays into a functional run game rather than another season stuck near triple digits in success rate.
Sidney Stewart (7 sacks, 10.5 TFL) and Zahir Mathis (6 sacks, 8.5 TFL) give Maryland a legitimate pass-rush pair back up front, which matters because the run defense was the bigger problem, ranking 99th in rushing yards allowed per game and 101st in run-stuff rate. Five-star signee Zion Elee headlines the incoming class, arriving straight out of St. Frances Academy rather than the portal, while transfers Lavon Johnson and Derrick LeBlanc add interior bodies to offset the departures of Cam Rice and Dillan Fontus. The talent at the top is real, but a defense that ranked 104th in havoc rate needs Elee and the transfers producing behind the line immediately, not developing on the fly.
Daniel Wingate is the anchor of this group, coming off a 102-tackle season that dwarfs anything else on the depth chart, and Maryland's linebacker outlook in 2026 is really about who can take pressure off him. Carlton Smith and Trey Reddick both return with modest tackle numbers but real edge for TFLs, while the departures of Keyshawn Flowers and Michael Harris strip out rotational depth rather than a true difference-maker. The bigger question is whether Travares Daniels II or Keyari James can turn unproven bodies into production, because a run defense that ranked 99th in yards allowed per game needs more than Wingate carrying the load.
Jalen Huskey's 72 tackles walk out the door, but Maryland's back seven was already leaking yards at a 97th-ranked clip, so the fix here isn't replacing a name, it's tightening execution. Lavain Scruggs (64 tackles) and Jamare Glasker, whose 6 TFL stood out among the group, anchor a mostly intact secondary alongside Dontay Joyner and Messiah Delhomme. The staff added bodies rather than headline talent, with four-star safety Darrell Carey and corners Sean Johnson and Hakim Satterwhite from the local high school ranks plus Boston College transfer Amari Jackson, betting that more competition fixes a unit that ranked 104th in havoc rate before it needs a new star.
Sean O'Haire is the story here, not a battle to replace anyone. He hit 21 of 24 field goals with a long of 49 and piled up 92 points in 2025, and he comes back as the incumbent while Eli Fulcher and Daniel Leahy sit behind him with no game log to their name. Bryce McFerson's return at 44.2 yards a punt gives Maryland a settled leg on both sides of the ball, so the special teams unit should be a source of stability for a program that went just 4-8 and needs points wherever it can find them in 2026.
Malik Washington returns after throwing for 2963 yards and 17 touchdowns, but Maryland gutted the room that caught his passes, losing Shaleak Knotts, Jalil Farooq and Octavian Smith Jr. to the portal. In come Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding from Old Dominion (51 catches, 667 yards, 6 TD) and Chris Durr Jr. from Wyoming (46 catches, 513 yards, 4 TD), a pair of proven mid-major producers asked to replicate that departed trio's volume immediately. With 16 outgoing transfers against a No. 43 class, this is a roster patched by the portal rather than restocked by recruiting, and Washington's numbers will only hold if Gladding and Durr adjust fast to Big Ten coverage.
Malik Washington threw for 2963 yards and 17 touchdowns last season but also tossed 9 interceptions, and Maryland went 4-8 anyway, so the passing offense already has a proven arm without proven results. With Shaleak Knotts and his 44 catches gone, Washington needs Dorian Fleming, who caught 40 balls for 351 yards, to become the steady target that turns those touchdown numbers into wins instead of just yardage.
Maryland went 1-8 in Big Ten play last season but managed a 4-5 cover mark in those same games, a split that says the on-field results were uglier than the margins. The real red flag for bettors is what follows a loss: a 2-5 mark against the spread the week after defeat shows a program that Mike Locksley has not gotten to respond well after getting hit, and with a full slate of conference losses to build on from 2025, that trend is the one to track into 2026. Against ranked competition Maryland was blanked straight up and against the number, 0-2 both ways, so nothing here suggests the Terrapins close that gap until the tape says otherwise.
