Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3FBS Independents · Jason Candle, year 1 · 9-4 last season · No. 114 in our FBS ratings
Kalieb Osborne arrives from Toledo to run an offense that scored 35.3 points a game a year ago but returns essentially none of the production behind that number, so Jason Candle is betting a transfer quarterback can rebuild a unit from scratch while a defense that allowed 27.0 points per game and a roster ranked 114th nationally in power rating give him almost no margin for a slow start.
Is Kalieb Osborne walking into a full rebuild rather than a one-man replacement job? With defensive returning production at 2.8%, Jason Candle's first season asks Osborne to carry an offense while the unit across the ball is essentially starting from scratch too, and that kind of across-the-roster turnover almost always shows up as growing pains before it shows up as wins. Expect the results to lag the talent early while Osborne and a nearly all-new defense learn each other on the fly.
Jason Candle inherits a 9-4 team but a slate that offers almost no margin, with UConn favored in exactly two games, home dates with Lafayette and Massachusetts. Everything else runs through a string of coin flips and worse, capped by North Carolina at home as a 20% underdog, Maryland as a 27% underdog, and a road trip to Southern Miss at 30%. Those three results, not the two gimmes, will decide whether Candle's debut clears the projected 5-7 mark or slides toward missing a bowl entirely.

Jason Candle takes over a 9-4 team that was living dangerously well beneath the hood. UConn turned a +15 turnover margin and 0% returning production into a bowl bid, and its conference win rate ran well ahead of what its yardage margin against those same opponents actually supported. Candle's first year comes with a soft power ranking at 114th, so the record he inherits is the ceiling, not the floor, for what this roster can repeat.
UConn's 2025 offense ranked 12th in passing yards per game and 11th in yards per play, but the quarterback who ran it is gone, leaving Kalieb Osborne, a Toledo transfer whose only credited 2025 stat is a 45-yard punting average, projected to take over an attack that scored 35.3 points a game. That gap between his résumé and the machine he is stepping into is the whole story here, not the record. The bigger problem sits on defense, where a run stop rate of 12.0% (135th) and a havoc rate of 91st nationally let opponents stay on schedule 46.6% of the time, so even a +15 turnover margin can only cover so much if Osborne needs time to grow into the job.
Joe Fagnano's 3,441 yards and 28 touchdowns walk out the door, and UConn replaces that entire room from scratch. Kalieb Osborne, the Toledo transfer, takes the first-team reps as the projected starter, but Jake Merklinger arrives from Tennessee with actual passing snaps on his résumé and Tyler Smith is still in the mix, so this camp battle stays live into fall. A UConn attack that ranked 12th nationally in passing yards per game last season is betting its ceiling on a newcomer nobody has seen throw a real college pass.
UConn is rebuilding this room from scratch via the portal, since Shawn Simeon and Soren Rief combined for next to nothing on the ground last year while the departed group of MJ Flowers, Oliver Lundberg Coleman, Mel Brown and Victor Rosa takes its production out the door. Kenji Christian arrives from Toledo off a 528-yard, 4-touchdown season and projects as the workload back, with Trey Cornist (469 yards, Central Michigan) and Dashun Reeder (222 yards, Northwestern) giving Jason Candle real depth behind him. None of the newcomers have played a snap in this offense, but the passing game's efficiency (284 yards per game, 11th in yards per play) should take pressure off Christian as he settles in.
Skyler Bell's 101 catches and 1,276 yards walk out the door, and none of the returning wideouts, Drew Kron, Daniel Rose or Teddy Williams, arrive with a catch on the books, so this room is effectively rebuilt through the portal. Ky Wilson's 64 grabs for 652 yards at Youngstown State make him the clear plug-in starter, with Toledo's Ryder Treadway (13 catches, 176 yards, 3 TD) adding a proven complement. That's a lot of new hands for a passing attack that ranked 12th nationally in passing yards per game a year ago, and whether Wilson and Treadway can approach Bell's role quickly will decide if that efficiency holds under new coach Jason Candle.
UConn's entire tight end production graduated with the group, as Javonte Vereen (21 catches, 305 yards, 5 TD) and Alex Honig (13 catches, 162 yards, 3 TD) both departed, leaving Mike Burton, Clemens Richter and Xavier Watson to take over without a single catch between them on record. Jackson Mangham arrives as a recruit from Olentangy, while Alex Godavitarne and Matt Ragan join via the transfer portal from Wheeling and Boston College. That's a near-total rebuild at the position for a passing attack that ranked 12th nationally in passing yards per game, so whichever of these six earns early snaps will be working with a quarterback situation that already knows how to throw it.
A line that allowed just 16 sacks and helped UConn average 6.84 yards per play last season now loses 12 bodies, and Jason Candle has to piece together a new front with barely more than half that room back. Ty Chan and Tamarus Walker are the elder statesmen among the returners, but with no depth chart to lean on, Candle went to the portal for answers, bringing in Terrence Moore and Raphael Greene-Nyarko from Toledo and Nathan Pahanich from Wake Forest to fill gaps up front. The rushing attack was already the soft spot at 165 yards per game and 60th nationally, and rebuilding this much of the interior makes it fair to wonder if that number holds even with the passing game humming.
UConn all but rebuilt its defensive front this offseason, and the numbers explain why: run defense sagged to 124th nationally against the run last season despite 35 team sacks, meaning the pressure never translated into stopping the ground game. Vincent Carroll-Jackson is gone, and the rebuild leans on transfers rather than incumbents, with Anas Luqman (33 tackles, 4 sacks, 9 TFL at Ohio) and Esean Carter (36 tackles, 3 sacks at Toledo) brought in to supply the disruption Matt Hoffman's 2.5 TFL alone could not. Andrew Laurich and Joshua Mickens add bodies up front, but the run-stuff rate has to climb fast for new coach Jason Candle debut to look different than last year's.
UConn is rebuilding this room almost entirely from outside the roster, since Bryun Parham (125 tackles) and Oumar Diomande (116 tackles) are both gone along with Tyquan King and Donovan Branch. The answer is a Toledo pipeline: K'Von Sherman arrives with 93 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 14.5 TFL, and Rickey Williams joins him from Toledo, while Luke Murphy adds 36 tackles and 4 TFL from Coastal Carolina. None of the returning names, Ethan Hogg, Hayden Pegg, Charles Johnson, Charlie O'Connor or Lewenski Ydore, carry meaningful production, so Sherman is the clear plug for lost run defense on a unit that already allowed 199 rushing yards per game (124th) a year ago.
UConn is rebuilding this secondary almost entirely through the portal, and it needed to given a run defense that gave up 199 yards a game (124th) and a back end that let opponents stay on schedule at a 126th-ranked clip. Moussa Kane arrives from Duke with 17 tackles, a sack and 2 TFL, giving new coach Jason Candle an actual playmaker at corner, while Zion Paret (Florida Atlantic) and Fresno State's Jayden Davis add starting experience opposite returning pieces like Saxton Suchanic. With Tyrece Mills gone and the rest of the returning group carrying no real statistical track record, Kane's ability to produce behind the line will determine whether this unit's havoc rate climbs off 91st nationally.
UConn loses the entire specialist corps that anchored a 9-4 season, and none of it comes back. Chris Freeman's 23-of-26 kicking and Connor Stutz's 45.1-yard punting average walk out the door, replaced by Ole Miss transfer Mike Baker, who arrives with 0-of-0 accuracy and just 3 points on his ledger, and Northwest Missouri State import Tommy Warner at punter. Jason Candle inherits a complete unknown on placekicks in his first year running the program, with Spencer Sullins the only holdover punter option and zero proven production anywhere on the unit.
Jason Candle inherits a 9-4 team that just lost its entire offensive identity: Joe Fagnano's 3,441 yards and 28 touchdowns, Cam Edwards' 1,240 rushing yards, and Skyler Bell's 101 catches all walked out the door. Kalieb Osborne, in from Toledo, is the projected answer at quarterback, and he will need help fast from a backfield remade with Trey Cornist (469 rushing yards at Central Michigan), Cyncir Bowers and Dashun Reeder, plus Youngstown State import Ky Wilson's 64 catches replacing some of that lost receiving volume. With 53 transfers in and a class ranked 110th, this roster is being reassembled almost entirely through the portal, and how quickly Osborne and that new backfield mesh will decide whether 2026 looks anything like last season.
Joe Fagnano threw for 3441 yards and 28 touchdowns against a single interception last season, and none of that production returns. Kalieb Osborne, the Toledo transfer projected to take over the offense, arrives with nothing but a 45-yard punting average on his ledger, which tells nothing about how he'll throw it. Trey Cornist adds 469 rushing yards from Central Michigan to lean on, but UConn's offensive identity in 2026 rises or falls on what Osborne does with the job.
UConn went 9-4 straight up but the betting market split hard on venue: at home the Huskies covered at an 83% clip and won every game outright, while on the road they slipped to 40% against the spread despite a 3-3 mark. That gap matters entering Jason Candle's first year at the controls, since a program that only performs as expected in front of its own crowd is exactly the profile bettors and oddsmakers key on. Until UConn proves it can travel, treat any road line with suspicion and any home chalk as live.
