Matt Campbell inherits a top-10 talent base but almost none of the players who produced with it, so Rocco Becht, his Iowa State transfer quarterback, is being asked to install a new offensive identity with a roster that returns just 15% of its production.
Can Rocco Becht win games while Penn State's defense retains only 24.5% of its production from a year ago? The answer leans grim: asking a first-year transfer quarterback to carry an offense while a nearly rebuilt defensive unit gets its footing under a new staff is a tough combination, and short fields created by defensive breakdowns will test Becht before he has time to develop chemistry with his new weapons. Expect the growing pains to show up as points allowed rather than yards Becht throws for, since the defense has the steeper hill to climb.
Matt Campbell's first season at Penn State comes down to three coin-flip road trips: at Michigan sits at just 39%, the toughest number on the board, with USC at home (48%) and at Washington (53%) forming the rest of the gauntlet. Everything else on the schedule favors Penn State heavily, including Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota and Rutgers at home, so a 9-3 projection assumes the Nittany Lions handle those should-win games and split the difference against Michigan, USC and Washington. Go 2-1 in that stretch and the debut season looks like a clear step forward from last year's 7-6 finish.

Matt Campbell takes over a program that was measurably better than 7-6 suggests. Against league opponents Penn State's yardage margin implied a much stronger win rate than the 33.3% it actually posted, and a 1-5 mark in games decided by seven or fewer points points to bad luck in close finishes rather than a flawed roster. A No. 17 power ranking backs that read, and with almost the entire two-deep turning over, Campbell's first year is less about fixing something broken than cashing in on a team that outplayed its record.
Matt Campbell brings his Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht with him, and the fit matters because Penn State's offense was never the problem last season, it ranked 34th in scoring and 26th in success rate despite a passing game that finished 105th in yards per game. Becht threw for 2,565 yards with 16 touchdowns against 9 interceptions at his old program, and he inherits a run game averaging 174 yards and a line that allowed just 19 sacks, pieces that should let him play efficient rather than spectacular. The defense held up its end at 25th in yards allowed, so if Becht simply avoids the low-explosiveness rut that had this offense ranked 100th in that category, Penn State's ceiling rises without needing him to be a gunslinger.
Matt Campbell brought his quarterback with him, and Rocco Becht's move from Iowa State erases the messy timeshare that split last year's snaps between Drew Allar and Ethan Grunkemeyer. Becht's 2565 yards and 16 touchdowns at Iowa State dwarf anything Penn State got at the position in 2025, and he inherits a passing attack that ranked just 105th nationally in yards per game despite an offense that finished 34th in scoring. Jack Lambert and fellow Iowa State transfer Alex Manske sit behind him with no real track record, so the passing game's leap forward in 2026 rides entirely on Becht turning that 5.78 yards per play into more explosive gains than the 100th-ranked mark this unit posted a year ago.
Kaytron Allen's 1,303 yards walk out the door, and Matt Campbell rebuilds the room almost entirely through the portal rather than trusting Quinton Martin Jr., who managed just 103 yards in his own action last year. Carson Hansen arrives from Iowa State off a 950-yard, 6-touchdown season and looks like the new lead back, with James Peoples (344 yards, 3 TD at Ohio State) in line for a complementary role. That's a lot of turnover behind a line that allowed only 19 sacks, and this ground game needs Hansen to replicate his Iowa State workload immediately rather than ease into it.
Penn State did not just lose bodies at receiver, it lost its production almost entirely, with Trebor Pena's 49 catches and Kyron Hudson's 23 gone and the returning corps of Koby Howard, Ethan Black, Logan Cunningham, Peter Gonzalez, Hank Lustig and Lyrick Samuel combining for just Howard's 7 grabs on paper. Matt Campbell answered by raiding Iowa State, bringing in Chase Sowell (32-500-2) and Brett Eskildsen (30-526-5) to plug straight into the lineup as ready-made contributors rather than projects. That transfer pipeline matters because Penn State's passing game ranked 105th nationally in yards per game last season, and Sowell and Eskildsen are the clearest bet to fix that without waiting on unproven names like Ben Whitver or Amarion Jackson to develop.
Matt Campbell didn't just bring himself to Penn State, he brought his old position group's production with him: Benjamin Brahmer (37 catches, 446 yards, 6 TD) and Gabe Burkle (26 catches, 302 yards, 1 TD) followed him from his previous stop and immediately outweigh what left with Khalil Dinkins (14 catches, 167 yards, 2 TD) and Luke Reynolds (26 catches, 257 yards, 0 TD). Andrew Rappleyea's 20 catches and 3 touchdowns give this room a proven Penn State piece alongside the new arrivals, and with Cooper Alexander also in tow, the tight end spot looks built to be a bigger factor than the 105th-ranked passing attack it's inheriting.
Matt Campbell inherits a line that allowed only 19 sacks and posted a 46.3% success rate last season, but the room that produced those numbers is largely scattered, with 13 linemen gone and just 12 back. None of the returners, including seniors Jim Fitzgerald and Anthony Donkoh and juniors Cooper Cousins and Chimdy Onoh, carry any statistical track record, so this is effectively a blind rebuild up front. Campbell brought in a full transfer wave to stabilize it, led by Trevor Buhr and Kuol Kuol II from his old Iowa State program along with Brock Riker and tackles Mason Bandhauer and Pete Eglitis, and how quickly that group gels will decide whether Penn State can hold onto last year's 174 rushing yards per game.
Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant are gone, and with them the production that anchored the line's 31 sacks and 80 tackles for loss last fall. Matt Campbell rebuilt the group almost entirely through the portal, bringing in Keanu Williams from UCLA (39 tackles), Ikenna Ezeogu from Iowa State (25 tackles, 3 TFL) and Alexander McPherson from Colorado, while Yvan Kemajou is the lone proven returning piece up front with his 5 TFL and 1.5 sacks. That much turnover at the position that generated last year's pass rush is a real gamble, and it lands on a defense that already ranked just 77th in run-stuff rate, so the newcomers need to win that battle fast for Penn State to hold onto its 21st-ranked pass defense.
Matt Campbell rebuilt this room with familiar faces from his old program, and it wasn't optional: Amare Campbell's 103 tackles and 9.5 TFL walked out the door, and Tony Rojas (25 tackles, 2 sacks, 4.5 TFL) and Alex Tatsch (14 tackles) alone can't replace that kind of disruption. Caleb Bacon arrives as the answer, a 4-star who racked up 68 tackles, 3 sacks and 9.5 TFL, with Kooper Ebel (77 tackles, 8 TFL) and Cael Brezina (29 tackles) adding bodies who've already played meaningful snaps. This is a unit betting its identity on transfer production rather than continuity, and with the defense already stopping the run at just an 18.2% rate, Bacon and Ebel need to hit the ground playing, not developing.
Matt Campbell's first Penn State secondary keeps its corner room mostly intact behind Audavion Collins (47 tackles, 2.5 TFL) and Zion Tracy (32 tackles, 5 TFL), but safety takes a real hit with King Mack's 58 tackles gone. Campbell leans on his old Iowa State pipeline to fill that spot, bringing in Jamison Patton (48 tackles, 1 TFL) and four-star Marcus Neal Jr. to pair with returning starter Vaboue Toure. Add four-star corner Josiah Zayas to a pass defense that already ranked 21st in passing yards allowed, and the back end should hold that strength even as it rebuilds at safety.
Ryan Barker missed one kick all last season, going 18 of 19 with a 49-yard long and 98 points, so the placekicking job is settled and one of the steadier pieces on this roster. The punting picture is not: Gabriel Nwosu and his 46-yard average are gone, and Matt Campbell brought in Nathan Tiyce from Mississippi State, who averaged 39 yards on 12 punts last year, to compete with St. Charles North product Lucas Tenbrock for the job. Long snapper is fully turned over with Tyler Duzansky departed and Andrew Dufault and Blaise Sokach-Minnick set to handle those duties, so Barker's leg is the one proven constant in a group otherwise remade for 2026.
Matt Campbell didn't just bring his old offensive coordinator's playbook, he brought the players who ran it: Rocco Becht, Carson Hansen, Brett Eskildsen, Chase Sowell and Benjamin Brahmer all follow him in from his previous stop, replacing a backfield that produced 1303 yards and 15 touchdowns from Kaytron Allen alone. Becht projects as the starter after throwing for 2565 yards and 16 touchdowns previously, a clear upgrade in continuity over a quarterback room that lost both Drew Allar and Ethan Grunkemeyer. With linebackers Kooper Ebel and Caleb Bacon also arriving to replace Amare Campbell's 103 tackles, this is less a roster reload than a wholesale transplant, and the 65th-ranked recruiting class suggests the transfer haul, not high school signing day, will define 2026.
Kaytron Allen's 1303 yards and 15 touchdowns walk out the door, and Carson Hansen, who ran for 950 yards and 6 scores at Iowa State, is the transfer tasked with replacing that entire backfield workload behind a new staff. Rocco Becht arrives at quarterback from that same Iowa State offense, so how quickly he and Hansen sync up will decide whether Penn State's run game clicks immediately or spends the fall searching for its identity.
Bettors got burned trusting this program last year, and the receipts are ugly: 1-5 against the spread as a home favorite, part of an overall 5-8 cover mark that undersells how bad it felt watching a 7-6 team lay points at home. Matt Campbell inherits a roster whose market price never matched its performance, especially against ranked competition, where Penn State went 0-3 straight up and covered just once in three tries. Until this staff proves otherwise, the smart read is to fade Penn State whenever it is favored at home and treat any short-week bounce back after a loss, where it did go 3-3 against the number, as the closest thing to reliable value.
