Ethan Hampton arrives from Illinois to run Blake Anderson's first Southern Miss offense with just 8% returning production around him, meaning the No. 87 power rating and No. 83 talent ranking matter less right now than how fast a nearly all-new supporting cast can jell behind him.
Can Ethan Hampton function with almost nothing around him? Southern Miss returns just 10.1% of its offensive production and 6.5% on defense, so Hampton will be throwing to unproven targets behind a line that has no shared snaps to draw on, all while Blake Anderson installs a new staff in year one. That combination points to a rough first half of the season before any chemistry catches up to Hampton's arm.
Blake Anderson's first season on the Hattiesburg sideline gets stress-tested away from home, where trips to Auburn (11% win), Tulane (27%) and Old Dominion (42%) will decide whether 2026 tracks toward the projected 7-5 or falls short of it. Everything else on the slate sits at 49% or better, including a manageable stretch through Arkansas State, Louisiana and South Alabama at home, so the margin for this team comes down to those three road tests rather than the schedule as a whole. A No. 97 schedule rank looks soft on paper, but Auburn alone is the one truly elite name on the board, and how Anderson's group handles that trip will say more about this rebuild than the rest of the slate combined.

Blake Anderson takes over a program whose 7-6 mark flatters what actually happened on the field. A turnover margin of +14 over 13 games is not a repeatable skill, and in league play the Golden Eagles won at a 62.5% clip despite a yardage margin against Sun Belt opponents that only supports something closer to 48.7%. The one real asset Anderson inherits is bodies, not luck, with 8% returning production putting this closer to a sustainable rebuild than last year's record suggested.
Southern Miss loses last year's starter, but Ethan Hampton, in from Illinois, takes over a passing attack that ranked 26th nationally in passing yards per game and produced the 24th-best explosiveness mark on successful plays. The ground game never got going at 93rd in rushing yards per game, so Hampton's efficiency through the air will decide whether that big-play passing identity translates into more than 39.3% success rate offense. Blake Anderson's first team also returns a defense that generated 30 sacks and a 17.4% havoc rate, giving Hampton a margin for error most first-year starters do not get.
Braylon Braxton's 3,053 yards and 24 touchdowns walk out the door, and Southern Miss hands the offense to a transfer with just 27 passing yards on his college resume. Ethan Hampton arrives from Illinois as the named starter, not a competition winner, stepping into an attack that already moved the ball through the air at 266 yards per game and hit explosive plays at a 24th-ranked clip. Landry Lyddy (406 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT) sits behind him as the experienced holdover, but the swing here is real, Hampton has to turn a big-play passing game into more consistent success on early downs, an area where this offense ranked 104th a year ago.
Jeffery Pittman's 695 yards walk out the door, and Southern Miss didn't run the ball well even with him in the backfield, finishing 93rd in rushing yards per game. Blake Anderson's answer is Brandon Hood, who brings 368 yards from Massachusetts to pair with returning back Robert Briggs (304 yards, 1 TD), while Louisville transfer Jamarice Wilder adds depth after a modest 15-yard sample. The ground game was already the weak link in an offense built on its passing attack (26th nationally), and Hood's arrival reads less like an upgrade than a necessary replacement for lost volume.
Southern Miss loses basically its entire proven passing-game production, with Micah Davis (31-429-5), Carl Chester (30-550-6) and Bralon Brown (30-353-2) all gone from a group that fueled a passing attack ranked 26th nationally. What is left on paper is thin: Davis Dalton has 4 catches for 82 yards, and the rest of the returning corps carries no meaningful stat line. New coach Blake Anderson is leaning on the portal to fill that void, with Chattanooga transfer A.J. Little (27-345-1) arriving as the most proven option and four-star Penn State transfer Kaden Saunders bringing a recruiting pedigree without a college stat line yet. Little's junior-college volume against a pipeline of unproven true freshmen and Saunders' talent suggests this room will look and produce very differently than the one that finished 104th in offensive success rate.
Every tight end who caught a pass for Southern Miss last season is gone, taking Kadinn Morris (15 catches, 183 yards, 2 TD) and Kyirin Heath (19 catches, 228 yards, 3 TD) with them. Caston Brown and Connor Gooding return with no game production to point to, so the modest receiving stopgap arrives from the portal in Preston Kilgore, who caught 7 passes for 48 yards at East Texas A&M. New coach Blake Anderson also brought in Broderick Peters and Jeremiah Beck as unproven pieces, meaning this group has to be rebuilt largely on projection rather than any returning tape.
Eight linemen departed off a unit that managed just 136 rushing yards per game (93rd) and a 39.3% success rate (104th) last season, so Blake Anderson is patching the trenches almost entirely with outside additions in his first year running the program. None of the five incoming linemen, led by tackles Braden Cain and Grant Kitchens plus interior additions Christian Young and Joe Rounds, has a track record at this level, and the returning group of Christian Anderson, Hayden Breal, Liam Cassidy, Jahmir Davis, Larry Edwards and Chase Malamala carries no statistical resume either. With 22 sacks allowed a year ago and no clear proven starter walking back in, this reads as a rebuild up front that will lean on the passing game's 266 yards per game and 26th-ranked explosiveness to cover for growing pains on the ground.
Blake Anderson's first Southern Miss defensive front has to replace its two most disruptive names, Jameer Lewis (3 sacks, 4.5 TFL) and Brodarius Lewis (57 tackles), leaving Kyle Davis, David Griffin, Chris Hayes, Zachariah Keith, Jackson Klein and Cameron Mackey as unproven returners with no production trail. The rebuild leans heavily on the portal, with Xavier McIver (1 sack, 1.5 TFL at East Carolina) and edge addition Will Smith from North Texas brought in to restore the pressure that produced 78 tackles for loss and a 30th-ranked havoc rate last season. Given the total turnover up front, that pass rush is the unit's real swing factor for 2026, not the run defense that already ranked 98th in yards allowed per game.
Southern Miss loses the bulk of its front seven production, with Chris Jones (132 tackles, 9.5 TFL) and Michael Montgomery (106 tackles, 6 TFL) both gone alongside Garrick Ponder's 4.5 sacks, gutting a group that actually generated real havoc a year ago. Mathis Haygood (44 tackles, 4 TFL) is the lone proven returner, and Blake Anderson's staff went to the portal to patch the hole, landing Melvin Spriggs from Akron, who brings 45 tackles and 5 TFL of starting experience to plug in immediately. With Avery Sledge and unproven names like Zion Edwards and Malachi Henderson filling out the rest, expect the tackle production to look thinner even if the scheme stays aggressive.
Southern Miss loses the two players who actually made plays on the back end, Josh Moten (61 tackles) and Ahmere Foster (47 tackles), leaving a secondary of near-blank stat lines behind. Blake Anderson rebuilt almost entirely through the portal, importing a five-man corner and safety haul led by Jyaire Brown (UCF), Hiroshi Carr (Morgan State) and Landon Sylvie (Southeast Missouri State), none of whom carry more than 12 tackles from their old stops. With returners like MaLik Caswell and Malakai Murphy offering only spot production, this is a defense that finished 100th in yards allowed per game leaning on unproven transfers to hold the line, not a group that replaces experience with experience.
The kicking picture is oddly crowded for a team that never settled on one leg last fall. Creighton Wilbanks made 9 of 14 with a 52-yard long and outscored Reed Harradine's 5-of-8 effort, and under Blake Anderson that gap should decide the job in Wilbanks' favor rather than another season of splitting attempts. The bigger swap is at punter, where Washington transfer Dusty Zimmer arrives to challenge incumbent Jack Murley, whose 36.5-yard average was the steadier known quantity heading into fall camp.
Blake Anderson wipes the slate almost entirely, sending 3053 passing yards and 24 touchdowns out the door with Braylon Braxton while also losing his top two tacklers in Chris Jones and Michael Montgomery. Ethan Hampton, who threw just 27 yards a year ago, now runs an offense that also lost Elijah Metcalf, Carl Chester and Tychaun Chapman at receiver, leaning on transfers like A.J. Little and Brandon Hood to replace that production. With 37 newcomers in and a recruiting class ranked 108, this is a roster remade through the portal rather than restocked by development, and Hampton's growth dictates whether the offense functions at all in year one under Anderson.
Braylon Braxton threw for 3,053 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, and Southern Miss is handing the reins to Ethan Hampton, an Illinois transfer whose only game action last year produced 27 yards and an interception. Blake Anderson has a real backfield behind him in Robert Briggs and Massachusetts transfer Brandon Hood, so how fast Hampton plays within that run game rather than trying to replicate Braxton's numbers through the air will decide whether this offense holds steady or backslides.
Blake Anderson takes over a team that bettors trusted at home and nowhere else last year, a 4-3 cover mark at home against a 1-3-1 disaster on the road, including an 0-1 dud as a road underdog. Backing Southern Miss as a home favorite paid off at a 60% clip, but that number was built under the previous staff, and a first-year coach installing his system gives no reason to assume the split holds. Until Anderson proves the road struggles were personnel and not program-wide, fading Southern Miss away from home remains the safer bet.
