Barry Odom's roster carries the 54th-ranked talent in the country, which makes a nine-loss conference season and a defense giving up 31.8 points a game look less like a talent problem and more like a scheme and execution one he has to fix in year two.
Can Barry Odom's defense field anything competent with only 28.4% of its production returning? The most likely outcome is another long year up front and in coverage, since replacing that much of a unit in one offseason rarely produces quick fixes, especially for a team that just went 0-9 in conference play. Purdue's turnaround hopes rest more on Ryan Browne's offense simply outscoring people than on a defense rebuilt almost entirely from scratch.
Barry Odom's second slate is bookended by the three games that will actually decide whether Purdue climbs out of last year's 0-9 conference hole: at Indiana, home against Notre Dame, and at Penn State, none of which the numbers like the Boilermakers to win. The rest of the Big Ten grind is genuinely up for grabs, with Minnesota, Maryland and Wisconsin at home all sitting near a coin flip, plus a manageable trip to Illinois. A 4-8 projection with 19% bowl odds says this team is built to win the toss-up games and get run through the three roadblocks, and how it fares in those tossups is what separates a step forward from a repeat of 2025.

A winless conference slate is the brutal floor Barry Odom starts from, not the ceiling. Purdue went 0-9 in Big Ten play and 2-10 overall, numbers that would sink most staffs, but Odom is only entering his second year, and a power rating of 71st shows the roster talent isn't nearly as far off as the record suggests. The gap between that middling ranking and a winless league campaign is the whole story for 2026, and it points to results catching up to talent rather than a program in genuine freefall.
Ryan Browne is back after throwing 10 interceptions against just 9 touchdowns on an offense that finished 120th in points per scoring opportunity, and nothing about his return signals that math is about to flip. Purdue's real problem was never just the passer, it was a defense that let opponents stay on schedule 48.3% of the time and gave up 6.63 yards per play, ranking 133rd nationally in that category. Barry Odom's second year rides on whether that defensive rot can be stopped before Browne is asked to erase a minus-12 turnover margin by himself.
Ryan Browne throwing 10 interceptions against 9 touchdowns a year ago was not just bad luck, it matched an offense that finished 120th in points per scoring opportunity and 123rd in scoring overall, so the turnovers were a symptom, not the disease. He is back as the settled starter for Barry Odom's second year, and the swing factor is whether an offensive line that allowed just 19 sacks can turn that protection into more explosive plays, since Purdue's 1.24 explosiveness mark ranked only 73rd despite the low sack total. Nothing behind Browne on the depth chart carries prior production, so 2026 is really a bet on him cutting the interceptions rather than the arrival of a new arm.
Barry Odom threw out nearly the entire backfield that managed just 126 rushing yards per game a season ago, and the answer came almost entirely through the portal. Travis Terrell Jr. arrives from Jackson State off a 607-yard, 5-touchdown season and projects as the workload back, with Jerrick Gibson (Texas) and Fame Ijeboi (Minnesota) giving Purdue three transfer runners with real production to plug into an offense that finished 120th in points per scoring opportunity. Antonio Harris (305 yards, 2 TD) is the lone holdover with a track record, meaning this group's identity in 2026 is imported, not homegrown.
Purdue basically imported a new receiving corps rather than trust last year's group to carry a passing game that finished 123rd in scoring. Michael Jackson III's 63 catches walk out the door, replaced by Asaad Waseem (69 catches, 726 yards at Florida Atlantic) and Bisi Owens (66 catches, 696 yards at Penn), both proven volume targets rather than projects. Corey Smith is the lone returning piece with real production (14 catches, 237 yards), so the passing offense's ceiling in 2026 rides on how fast Waseem and Owens sync with whoever throws them the ball.
No Purdue tight end topped 10 catches in 2025, and Barry Odom went shopping in the portal to fix that, landing Kylan Fox from UCF, whose 16 grabs for 137 yards and a touchdown already outproduce anything George Burhenn or Luca Puccinelli managed. Fox slots in as the clear early target over an offense that scored on just 3.06 points per opportunity, 120th nationally, so any receiving punch from the position is pure upside. Rico Walker's 100 yards leave with him, but between Fox and a three-man high school haul including Ar'Mari Towns and Cooper McCutchan, Purdue is betting the tight end room looks nothing like the one that limped through an 0-9 conference season.
Purdue's line allowed only 19 sacks in 2025, a respectable number that masked an offense stuck at 126 rushing yards per game and 3.06 points per scoring opportunity, 120th nationally. Barry Odom answers that inefficiency with volume rather than a single savior, bringing in five new linemen including tackles Terrell Berryhill Jr. and Jatavius Shivers alongside interior additions Boaz Stanley, Brock Brownfield and James Williams Jr., while 9 linemen departed the room. With no depth chart clarity, the group leans on senior holdovers like Hayden Timosciek, Joey Tanona and Jude McCoskey to anchor a rebuild that has to find push in the run game before this offense climbs out of the bottom third nationally.
Purdue's front lost its best two disruptors, CJ Nunnally IV (5 sacks, 10.5 TFL) and Demeco Kennedy, off a line that let opponents stay on schedule at a 131st-ranked clip and allowed 6.63 yards per play, 133rd nationally. Nobody returning cracked more than three TFL, so the group leans on volume additions: UCF transfer Rodney Lora arrives with 4 TFL of his own production, and four-star Georgia transfer Elo Modozie brings edge juice even with modest tackle numbers. This is a rebuild through addition rather than continuity, and until Lora, Modozie or one of the freshman edges (Josiah Hope, Katrell Webb, Maximilian Carmicle) forces tackles behind the line, the run-stuff rate that sat at 78th nationally isn't trending up.
Mani Powell's 110 tackles and 5 sacks walk out the door, leaving Charles Correa, who posted 77 tackles and 7.5 TFL of his own, as the only proven piece in a room that otherwise has to be rebuilt from scratch. Purdue leaned on the transfer portal to refill it, bringing in Jojo Hayden from Illinois and Hudson Miller from Toledo, but neither arrives with the production Powell or Alex Sanford Jr. (47 tackles) leaves behind. A defense that already ranked 133rd in yards per play allowed is betting Correa can anchor things while a patchwork of newcomers and unproven returners like Jaxon Ott and Owen Davis figure out their roles on the fly.
A secondary that let opponents complete 242 yards a game through the air and finish 133rd in yards per play allowed gets an almost entirely new look at safety. Barry Odom went to the portal for fixes, landing Jaden Mangham from Michigan and Mister Clark, whose 57 tackles and 6.5 TFL at Florida International suggest he can actually hit downhill instead of just filling a stat line. Hudauri Hines, whose 32 tackles paced the returning group, is the one holdover who has actually played meaningful snaps, which means the newcomers are not competing for a job so much as being handed one.
Purdue loses the one guy who actually did his job well last fall in Spencer Porath, who hit 15 of 17 field goals and put up 69 points, and hands the placekicking duties to a battle between incumbents Seth Turner and Jack Weeter or true freshman Jacobo Echeverria Lozano, none of whom has a college kick on record. The bigger swing is at punter, where Buffalo transfer Dylan Drennan arrives with 64 punts and a 44.8 average, an actual upgrade on departed Jack McCallister's 43.2 mark, and should simply take the job outright. For a team that went 0-9 in Big Ten play, replacing a reliable kicker with total unknowns is not a small detail.
Purdue gutted its skill positions and rebuilt them almost entirely through the portal, bringing in Asaad Waseem (69 catches, 726 yards at Florida Atlantic) and Bisi Owens (66 catches, 696 yards at Penn) to replace Michael Jackson III and Nitro Tuggle, while Travis Terrell Jr. and Jerrick Gibson arrive to take over a backfield that lost Devin Mockobee and Malachi Thomas. All of it funnels to Ryan Browne, who returns after throwing for 2,153 yards but tossing 10 interceptions against 9 touchdowns, meaning the new weapons matter less than whether Browne cuts down the giveaways. On defense, Mister Clark and Jaden Mangham step in for departed tacklers Mani Powell and Tahj Ra-El, but this is fundamentally Browne's offense to fix with new faces around him.
Purdue's whole 2026 outlook rides on whether Ryan Browne can cut down the interceptions, not just pile up yards. He threw for 2,153 yards but tossed 10 picks against only 9 touchdowns behind a 2-10 team, and with Devin Mockobee's production gone from the backfield, Browne cannot lean on the run to bail him out. Travis Terrell Jr. arrives from Jackson State to share load with Antonio Harris, but this offense goes as far as Browne's decision-making takes it.
Purdue's 2-10 collapse under Barry Odom in year one produced no safe harbor for bettors either, with a 5-7 mark against the spread that got worse the week after a loss (3-6, 33% cover). Home favorite spots were the trap, going just 1-2 against the number, and the winless Big Ten campaign (0-9 straight up) still managed a 44% cover rate in conference, evidence the market adjusted to just how bad this roster was faster than Vegas usually does. Nothing here points to profitable backing until Odom shows a road win is possible, since Purdue went 0-5 away from home a season ago.
