With the nation's No. 2 roster talent and just 40 percent production returning, Kalen DeBoer's 2026 team is built to prove that Alabama can outclass the SEC on sheer bodies even while Austin Mack learns the job in real games.
Can Austin Mack replace Ty Simpson's 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns while Alabama's offense loses over two-thirds of its production? The likelier outcome is a rockier ride than the 11-4 record suggests, since the 2025 team leaned on close-game luck and a turnover margin that rarely repeats, and Mack takes over behind a unit with just 30.4% returning production. With the defense actually the sturdier carryover group at 49.1% returning, expect Mack's growing pains to define whether Alabama's record catches up to what its underlying play actually earned last year.
Alabama's slate ranks 7th in difficulty, and the season turns on a brutal stretch that offers no home comfort: a coin-flip trip to LSU (44%), a near pick-'em with Georgia at home (45%), and a road test at Tennessee (56%). Everything else on the board, from East Carolina and Chattanooga to Florida State, South Carolina, Mississippi State and even the Auburn and Texas A&M dates, projects as a game Kalen DeBoer's team should win. Go 2-1 or better in that Georgia-Tennessee-LSU gauntlet and the 9-3 projection undersells this team; drop two of three and it's exactly right.

Alabama went 4-1 in one-score games and turned a plus-7 turnover margin into an 11-4 finish, plus a 7-1 mark in conference play that outran what its yardage margin against league opponents actually supports. Kalen DeBoer's group closed with a 34-24 win over Oklahoma in the Playoff before a 3-38 loss to Indiana, a stretch that shows how thin the difference was between banner year and letdown. With turnovers and close-game luck unlikely to repeat, 2026 is less about proving DeBoer belongs and more about whether the roster can win on margins instead of moments.
Alabama's offense was built on the arm, not the legs, in 2025, ranking 29th in passing yards per game while the run game sat at 127th, and that imbalance now falls to Austin Mack, the projected starter, who threw for 228 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions in his look last year. The bigger strength carries over regardless of who is throwing it: a defense that ranked 13th in yards allowed per game and 9th against the pass gives Mack margin to grow into the job without needing to fix the ground game overnight. If Alabama's rushing attack stays stuck near the bottom third nationally, the offense will again lean on Mack and the passing game to match a defense that is already ahead of it.
Ty Simpson's 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns walk out the door, and Alabama replaces that production with an open camp battle led by Austin Mack, who takes the first-team reps after throwing for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns without an interception in his limited look last season. Keelon Russell pushes him with a similar 143-yard, 2-touchdown, zero-pick sample, and neither John Gazzaniga nor John Cooper brings passing numbers to the table, so this stays Mack's race to lose rather than a true toss-up. The bigger issue for whoever wins the job is the shaky pocket in front of him, a line that allowed 33 sacks a season ago, meaning Mack's accuracy has to show up behind a group that has to clean up its protection fast.
A 127th-ranked rushing attack was Alabama's clearest offensive problem in 2025, and losing Jam Miller's 504 yards without any single returning back topping 284 doesn't fix it by itself. Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley and AK Dear all come back with modest, split workloads, but the real bet is five-star signee EJ Crowell, brought in to be the explosive runner this group never had. Until Crowell or someone else forces a workload, this is still a passing-driven offense (29th in passing yards per game) leaning on a backfield that has to prove it can be more than a complement.
Germie Bernard's 862 yards and Isaiah Horton's 8 touchdowns walk out the door, and Alabama replaces that production with a transfer, not a returning breakout. Noah Rogers arrives from NC State having already caught 31 balls for 413 yards, slotting in behind Ryan Coleman-Williams, whose 689 yards and 49 catches now make him the clear top target. Lotzeir Brooks adds a proven 32-catch complement, but with a pass game that ranked 29th nationally in yardage while the run game stalled at 127th, this receiver room carries even more of the offensive weight in 2026.
Josh Cuevas' 37 catches walk out the door, and Alabama didn't just hand the room to its returners. Kaleb Edwards (11 catches, 150 yards) is the most proven option left, but the staff went to the portal for Josh Ford, who arrives from Oklahoma State off a 3-catch, 45-yard, 1-TD season, and added blue-chip freshman Mack Sutter to raise the ceiling. With a rushing attack stuck at 127th nationally, this group's blocking and underneath work matter as much as any receiving numbers Edwards or Ford put up.
Alabama allowed 33 sacks and managed just 104 rushing yards per game (127th nationally) last season, and Kalen DeBoer responded by all but starting over up front. Kadyn Proctor, Wilkin Formby and Parker Brailsford are among 14 linemen out the door, leaving seniors Baker Hickman and Davis Peterson as the graybeards in a room that leans on newcomers Nick Brooks (a Texas transfer) and blue-chip freshmen Jared Graham and Bryson Cooley to rebuild the interior and tackle spots. With more gone than back, the run game is the thing to watch first, since the passing attack (29th in yards per game) can survive an uneven line far better than a rushing offense that was already struggling.
Alabama lost the bulk of its production up front, with LT Overton, James Smith and Keon Keeley all gone from a line that helped rank 9th in passing yards allowed, so Kalen DeBoer went to the portal rather than lean on a thin returning group of Edric Hill and London Simmons. Devan Thompkins arrives from USC with 30 tackles and 6.5 TFL, and Kedrick Bingley-Jones adds 25 tackles from Mississippi State, giving the interior actual proven snaps instead of hope. The five-man returning core combined for barely more tackles than Overton alone posted last year, which makes Thompkins and Bingley-Jones the real starters in 2026, not complements to them.
Yhonzae Pierre's 8 sacks and 14.5 TFL were the disruptive engine of a defense that finished 16th in tackles for loss, and Alabama needed that production because Justin Jefferson (79 tackles, 6.5 TFL) and Nikhai Hill-Green (54 tackles) are both gone from the room. Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson arrives with 57 tackles of his own to plug that gap immediately, while five-star Gainesville signee Xavier Griffin gives the position a long-term building block even if he's not asked to carry snaps as a true freshman. The bet here is Pierre plus Woodson replicate the lost tackle volume while the defense's back end, ranked 9th against the pass, buys the newcomers time to grow into the scheme.
Alabama returns almost its entire secondary, and that's the story before a single five-star even suits up: Bray Hubbard (74 tackles), Keon Sabb, Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee Jr. all come back to a group that ranked 9th in passing yards allowed per game. Domani Jackson's departure opens a spot, but the Tide countered by landing five-star corner Jorden Edmonds and five-star safety Jireh Edwards, a pair that lets DeBoer rotate fresh legs behind an already proven core rather than replace it. With that much continuity on the back end, the ceiling for this unit is a defense that climbs from good to genuinely elite against SEC passing games.
Alabama replaces its kicking game almost entirely with Lorcan Quinn, who hit 21 of 26 field goals with a 55-yard long at Marshall, a proven track record none of the returning Tide specialists can match. Punter duties fall to Alex Asparuhov and Anderson Green with no prior game statistics between them, replacing Blake Doud's 52 punts at a 42.3-yard average. Quinn arrives as the clear answer at placekicker, but the punt job is a genuine question mark heading into 2026.
Ty Simpson's 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns walk out the door, and Austin Mack, who threw for just 228 yards in limited action, is projected to take over an offense that also loses Germie Bernard and Isaiah Horton, its top two receivers by touchdowns. Noah Rogers arrives from NC State to soften that blow, but the bigger investment is up front and on the edge, where Devan Thompkins (3 sacks, 6.5 TFL at USC) and Terrance Green join a linebacker room that had to replace Deontae Lawson, Justin Jefferson and Nikhai Hill-Green all at once, with Caleb Woodson brought in from Virginia Tech to help fill that void. With a No. 2 recruiting class layered on top, Alabama is betting its defensive rebuild outpaces the growing pains of handing the offense to Mack.
Ty Simpson's 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns walk out the door, and Alabama hands the offense to Austin Mack off just 228 career passing yards. Alabama's number to know is 6-1 at home against the spread, an 86% cover rate that turned Bryant-Denny into an ATM for anyone backing the Crimson Tide as favorites. The real signal is resilience: a perfect 3-0 against the spread the week after a loss and 2-0 as road underdogs show a team that bounced back and covered when the public expected a letdown, a trend bettors should track into 2026.
