Noah Fifita is back to run an offense that finished 30th in scoring, and with a talent floor ranked 67th nationally, Arizona's power rating of 34 says Brent Brennan's staff is already outcoaching the roster it has on paper.
Can a defense returning just 41.7% of its production keep pace while Noah Fifita and a patchwork backfield figure out the run game around him? The likely answer is no, not early, since replacing that much experience on defense usually shows up in bunches before it stabilizes. Arizona's 9-4 floor last year was built on continuity that mostly walked out the door on the defensive side, and this group will be learning on the fly in Big 12 play.
A middling schedule rank of 59 hides where this season actually gets decided: the trip to Texas Tech, a coin-flip at BYU, and a true toss-up at Kansas State. Arizona is projected a 71% favorite at Washington State and a 61% favorite at West Virginia, meaning the away slate isn't uniformly brutal, but those three low-probability road games are where Brent Brennan's third year either holds together or comes apart. Split those and 7-5 with 88% bowl odds looks conservative; lose all three and the home dates against Utah and TCU, each near a coin flip, decide whether Arizona even gets back to a bowl.

Nine wins looked like a program turning a corner under Brent Brennan, but the +18 turnover margin over 13 games and an offense that needed just 12.9 yards per point against a 14.1 league median both point to a team that finished drives cleaner than it will again. The defense made opponents earn theirs at 16.0 yards per point, which is sturdier ground, but a 66.7% win rate in league play that undershoots what the yardage margin against those opponents implied means the record flattered the roster more than the tape did. With 67% of production back, the pieces are here to be a legitimately good Big 12 team, just not the same 9-4 one.
Noah Fifita comes back with 3,228 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions, but Arizona's offense finished 79th in points per scoring opportunity and 107th in sacks allowed, a gap between a clean quarterback and a line that keeps stalling drives. The defense held teams to 19.3 points per game and ranked 5th in havoc rate, which means the ceiling for 2026 is whether Fifita and that protection issue can catch up to a defense that already plays at a national level. If the offense tightens up in the red zone, Arizona's turnover margin of +18 gives it margin for error most teams do not have.
Noah Fifita is back for a third year as the starter after throwing for 3,228 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions, and that continuity is the whole story here while most of the Big 12 breaks in new arms. The line in front of him is the real concern, since Arizona allowed 30 sacks last season, and until that improves the passing game's efficiency will keep lagging its raw yardage. Behind Fifita, Mason Bray, Sawyer Anderson and Luke Haugo give Brent Brennan a settled depth chart, with four-star signee Oscar Rios added as a developmental piece rather than a threat to the job.
Ismail Mahdi's 853 yards walk out the door, but Arizona replaces the workload by committee rather than with one heir. Kedrick Reescano's 9 touchdowns on 396 yards signal he's the closer near the goal line, while Quincy Craig's 364 yards give the Wildcats a legitimate co-starter, not a mere change-of-pace back. Marshall transfer Antwan Roberts adds 512 rushing yards of proven production to the mix, which matters for an offense that ranked just 75th in rushing yards per game a year ago and needs more push on the ground to lighten the load on the passing attack.
Kris Hutson's 60 catches and 764 yards walk out the door, and no returning receiver comes close to replacing that workload, with Chris Hunter's 27 grabs for 372 yards the closest thing to a proven target. Tre Spivey turned 23 catches into 7 touchdowns, a red-zone knack Arizona needs again, while Giovanni Richardson adds another experienced hand at 21 catches for 299 yards. The reinforcements arrive from different directions: four-star signee R.J. Mosley joins straight out of Pittsburg high school, while Rodney Gallagher III and DJ Jordan come in via transfer from West Virginia and USC, and how fast that group of newcomers grows up will decide whether this passing game can hold onto its 36th-ranked national standing in yards per game.
Arizona rebuilt this room almost entirely through the portal rather than trusting an inexperienced returning group of Kellan Ford, Tyler Mustain, Tyler Powell and Lachlan Teissier, none of whom carry a catch on file. Cole Rusk arrives from Illinois with 19 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown, giving Brent Brennan's offense a proven target to replace Sam Olson's 17-catch, two-score production, while Shane King adds another established pass-catcher from Southern Miss. With the passing game already 36th nationally in yards per game, Rusk stepping into the top receiving role at tight end is the clearest bet to keep that unit trending up in 2026.
Thirty sacks allowed last season, 107th nationally, is the number that defines this rebuild, and Arizona answered it by overhauling the room rather than patching it. Ten linemen are out the door, and while seniors Tristan Bounds and Alexander Doost are back, the more notable additions are four-star signees Malachi Joyner and Justin Morales, high school prospects out of Williams Field and El Paso Franklin who arrive with a chance to start early, plus BYU transfer tackle Jake Griffin brought in for immediate experience. With no depth chart to lean on, this projects as a true rebuild up front, and whether Brennan's offense can hold onto last year's 255 passing yards per game likely comes down to how fast Joyner and Morales play beyond their years.
Arizona's front loses its top disruptor in Deshawn McKnight (11 TFL) and its leading tackler in Tiaoalii Savea (30 tackles), but the group returns nearly its entire depth chart in Leroy Palu, Mays Pese, Dominic Lolesio and Julian Savaiinaea, none of whom cracked even 2.5 TFL last year. That's the tension for 2026: a defense that ranked 5th nationally in havoc rate and 7th in passing yards allowed did it without much individual pass-rush production, sitting 100th in sacks, and now hands even more snaps to that low-output returning core. The high school signing class, led by edge prospects Prince Williams and Harvie Moeai plus Compass Prep's Keytrin Harris, brings size and length rather than proven stats, while Cal Poly transfer Victory Johnson (1.5 TFL) arrives as the lone newcomer who's actually rushed the passer in college.
Taye Brown's 93 tackles and 8.5 TFL anchor a group that stayed disruptive without teeing off on the quarterback, and Arizona addressed that gap by bringing in Everett Roussaw Jr. from Memphis, who piled up 2.5 sacks and 6.5 TFL of his own. Losing Max Harris and Riley Wilson strips out real tackle production, but Chase Kennedy's 4 sacks and 8 TFL give the room a proven finisher to pair with Roussaw as Brown's running mate. The havoc numbers say this defense wins with disruption up front rather than pure pass-rush juice, and that identity should hold with Brown, Kennedy and the Memphis transfer setting the tone.
A secondary that ranked 7th nationally in pass defense last season just lost its two leading tacklers, Dalton Johnson (97 tackles) and Genesis Smith (77), along with Treydan Stukes and Ayden Garnes, gutting the back end that made Arizona's defense so stingy through the air. Dwight Bootle and Jay'Vion Cole return at corner, but the safety room is rebuilt almost entirely through the portal, with Lee Molette III (65 tackles at UConn) and Daylen Austin plugging in alongside holdovers Gavin Hunter and Dajon Hinton. Tyrese Boss and four-star Xaier Hiler give Brent Brennan corner depth, but replacing that much proven tackling production means the pass defense numbers are more likely to slip than repeat.
Michael Salgado-Medina returns as the incumbent placekicker after making 19 of 31 field goals with a long of 57 last season, a volume job that puts real weight on his leg again in 2026. The bigger swing is at punter, where Isaac Lovison's 42.6-yard average departs and Arizona brings in Carter Schwartz from Louisville, who averaged 39.6 yards on 14 punts, alongside Chase Ridley and incumbent Ian French to settle the job. With Drew Nicolson back at long snapper, the unit's stability rests almost entirely on whether Schwartz can approach Lovison's number in real Big 12 games.
Arizona gutted its skill-position corps, losing Ismail Mahdi's 853 rushing yards and the receiving trio of Kris Hutson, Javin Whatley and Luke Wysong, but Noah Fifita is back after throwing for 3228 yards and 29 touchdowns, which keeps the offense's floor high no matter who lines up around him. Marshall transfer Antwan Roberts arrives to replace Mahdi's carries, and Illinois tight end Cole Rusk gives Fifita a fresh target after catching 19 passes a year ago. On defense, the losses of Dalton Johnson and Max Harris get answered by transfers Lee Molette III and Everett Roussaw Jr., both of whom logged real snaps at UConn and Memphis and should slot in as immediate contributors rather than projects.
Ismail Mahdi's 853 yards are gone, and Arizona is betting the ground game on a three-way split between Kedrick Reescano, Quincy Craig and Marshall transfer Antwan Roberts rather than a single workhorse. Noah Fifita's 29 touchdown arm can cover for plenty, but if Reescano's nine-touchdown burst last season doesn't scale up as the lead back, opposing defenses will sit on Fifita and make this offense one-dimensional.
Arizona at home is the number to chase, an 80% cover rate as a home favorite and 5-2 against the spread overall at Arizona Stadium under Brent Brennan. That home strength papers over a shakier read elsewhere, a break-even 50% mark as a road underdog and against ranked teams. Bettors backing the Wildcats should be doing it in Tucson as favorites, not chasing them into road spots where the number has been a coin flip.
