A team that just went 16-0 with a roster ranked 72nd in accumulated talent and only 31% returning production is less proof of a dynasty than of Curt Cignetti's system, which now has to prove itself all over again with Josh Hoover under center.
Can Curt Cignetti win at this level with a defense returning less than half its production and an offense that lost 41 of Fernando Mendoza's touchdown passes? The likelier path is a step back from perfect rather than a repeat, since replacing that much output on both sides in the same offseason is not something even a 16-0 program shrugs off. Cignetti's system carried a young, unheralded roster once already, and that scheme fit is the best reason to expect a very good team in 2026, just not an undefeated one.
Indiana comes off an unbeaten run through the Big Ten, but the 2026 slate finally hands Curt Cignetti the games that were missing from that résumé. Ohio State visits as a true coin flip, and trips to Michigan and a home date with USC round out the stretch that will actually tell people whether last season was real or a product of a soft draw. Everything else, from Rutgers to Nebraska to Purdue, projects as a comfortable win, so the season's identity gets written in those three games alone.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Nobody in the country stacked a résumé like Curt Cignetti's team did, but the components underneath the 16-0 mark are the least repeatable kind. An offense that needed just 11.0 yards per point scored, a turnover margin of plus-22, and a 4-0 mark in one-score games all point the same direction: this group got the ball to bounce its way as much as it earned every result. With only 31% of the production back, Cignetti is replacing the engine of a nearly perfect season, and the honest bet is that the 2026 record looks a lot more human even if the program's standing in the Big Ten does not.
Indiana went 16-0 with historically efficient football, the offense living off a nation-best 56.3% third-down rate and 5.13 points per scoring trip, while a defense built on takeaways (+22 turnover margin) and disruption (129 tackles for loss, 1st) suffocated people. None of that carries a name into 2026 the way Josh Hoover does now. The TCU transfer, who threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns, inherits an offense that was efficient rather than explosive (114th in explosiveness), so his job is less about reinventing anything and more about not being the reason Curt Cignetti's machine slows down.
Fernando Mendoza's 3535-yard, 41-touchdown season is gone, but Curt Cignetti replaced him with a near carbon copy in TCU transfer Josh Hoover, who threw for 3472 yards and 29 touchdowns last season and steps straight into a lineup that led the country in third-down conversion rate and scoring per opportunity. The bigger swing is stylistic: Hoover has to protect the ball better than his 13 interceptions suggest while an offense that ranked 114th in explosiveness leans on him to hit more than the check-downs that got Indiana to 41.6 points a game. Grant Wilson and the rest of the room are pure depth, this is Hoover's offense from day one.
Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black combined for over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns on last year's unbeaten team, and both are gone, leaving a backfield that produced historic efficiency numbers without its top two carriers. Khobie Martin (506 yards, 6 TD) and Lee Beebe Jr. (209 yards, 1 TD) return with real game reps, but the headline addition is Boston College transfer Turbo Richard, who ran for 749 yards and 9 touchdowns last season and steps in as the clear lead-back candidate. With a line and scheme that already ranked 1st nationally in third-down conversion rate and points per scoring opportunity, Richard inherits a plug-and-play situation more than a rebuild.
Omar Cooper Jr.'s 70 catches and 13 touchdowns walk out the door, and Indiana didn't just hope to replace them, it went and bought better. Nick Marsh arrives from Michigan State with 59 catches and 662 yards already on his résumé, and Shazz Preston brings 723 yards from Tulane, giving Curt Cignetti two proven outside targets to slot next to Charlie Becker, whose 34 catches for 679 yards made him the clear complementary piece last fall. That's a full-scale reload at the position behind an offense that already ranked 3rd in scoring, and with Marsh and Preston stepping into featured roles immediately, this group should hit the ground running rather than break one in.
Indiana's entire tight end production from an undefeated season walks out the door with Riley Nowakowski (32 catches, 387 yards, 2 TD) and Holden Staes gone, leaving Andrew Barker and Blake Thiry to take over without a single catch between them on record. The fix came through recruiting rather than the portal: four-star Parker Elmore and three-star PJ MacFarlane arrive as true freshmen, while Miami transfer Brock Schott brings only 2 catches for 24 yards of proven work. That thin track record matters less behind an offense built on efficiency, not big pass plays, given Indiana ranked 1st nationally in third down rate and points per scoring opportunity while sitting 114th in explosiveness, so this group's value will show up in moving the chains, not in highlight grabs.
Indiana allowed just 25 sacks behind an offense that led the nation in third-down rate, but the group that built that record loses five departing starters by name, Pat Coogan, Evan Lawrence, Mitch Verstegen, Jack Greer and Zen Michalski among six total exits, and this is now a rebuild up front rather than a returning strength. Curt Cignetti is leaning on seniors Bray Lynch, Carter Smith and Drew Evans to anchor the interior while sophomores Adedamola Ajani and Austin Leibfried grow into bigger roles. The reinforcements come from two directions, Wisconsin transfer Joe Brunner joining as a ready-made interior piece while high school signees Ben Novak, Sam Simpson, Kenton Mondeau and CJ Scifres arrive to compete for the future rather than fix 2026 on day one.
Indiana loses Stephen Daley's 19 TFL off a line that ran the nation's top TFL total, but Tyrique Tucker (6 sacks, 11.5 TFL) and Mario Landino (5 sacks, 6.5 TFL) return as the core of a group that finished 1st in run-stuff rate. The portal additions replace bulk more than star power, with Kansas State transfers Chiddi Obiazor and 4-star Tobi Osunsanmi joining Tulsa's Joe Hjelle, all bringing modest but real production to a front that will lean on continuity up front while Josh Burnham and Daniel Ndukwe round out the interior rotation. Curt Cignetti's line does not need to replace Daley's exact role so much as spread his snaps, and with this much returning disruption already in place, the havoc numbers should hold even as the names shift.
The unbeaten run was built on a front seven that lived in opposing backfields, and the two names who did the most damage are both back. Rolijah Hardy (103 tackles, 8 sacks, 15 TFL) and Isaiah Jones (78 tackles, 7 sacks, 14.5 TFL) form as disruptive a tandem as anyone in the league, and that continuity matters far more than replacing Aiden Fisher's 95 tackles, since a defense that led the country in tackles for loss and ranked 2nd in sacks doesn't need to reinvent itself. The question is depth behind them, where Jeff Utzinger, Kaiden Turner and unproven pieces like Clayton Allen and Amari Kamara will be pushed by a trio of incoming freshmen in Ja'Dyn Williams, Trevor Gibbs and Jacob Savage, but with Hardy and Jones anchoring, this group can keep hunting the same way it did on the way to a 16-0 season.
Louis Moore and D'Angelo Ponds are gone from a secondary that helped Indiana post the No. 2 defense in points allowed a year ago, but Jamari Sharpe (49 tackles, 5 TFL) and Amare Ferrell (48 tackles) return as the anchors of that group. Curt Cignetti went to the portal for A.J. Harris, a former Penn State corner who logged 33 tackles, and added Montana State's Carson Williams, pairing both with blue-chip high school corner Kasmir Hicks. The tackling numbers up front will look different without Devan Boykin and his 6 TFL, but this back end still has the pieces to keep Indiana's havoc rate near the top of the country.
Nico Radicic made 17 of 18 field goals with a long of 46 last year, and his return gives Indiana the rare luxury of stability at kicker off a 16-0 season. The bigger swing is at punter, where Mitch McCarthy's 41.6-yard average is gone and Hawai'i transfer Billy Gowers steps in off a 48-punt, 46.4-yard average, an upgrade in hang and distance for a Curt Cignetti team that plays a lot of field-position football. Snapper is fully turned over with Sam Lindsey, Jackson Tolle and Iowa State transfer Drew Clausen all in the mix behind departed Mark Langston, the only real unknown left on this unit.
A 16-0 season built around Fernando Mendoza, Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt gets rebuilt almost entirely at the skill spots, and Curt Cignetti is betting the portal covers the gap. Josh Hoover arrives from TCU with 3472 yards and 29 touchdowns of his own to slide in as the projected starter, throwing to Michigan State import Nick Marsh and Tulane's Shazz Preston while Turbo Richard replaces the departed Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black backfield tandem. The defense loses Aiden Fisher and Louis Moore but restocks up front with A.J. Harris, Tobi Osunsanmi and Chiddi Obiazor, a haul that reads as reloading rather than rebuilding for a team trying to defend an unbeaten league record.
Fernando Mendoza's 41-touchdown, 6-interception season is gone, and the whole operation now rests on Josh Hoover, the TCU transfer projected to take over. His prior line, 3472 yards with 29 touchdowns against 13 picks, shows real arm talent but nowhere near Mendoza's efficiency, and closing that turnover gap while spreading the ball to Charlie Becker is what keeps Indiana's offense from taking a real step back.
Indiana went 16-0 straight up in 2025 but still covered at a healthy 63% clip, meaning the market never fully caught up to what Curt Cignetti's team actually was. The gap was starkest against ranked opponents, where the Hoosiers went 6-0 outright and 5-1 against the spread, suggesting bookmakers kept underestimating a program that had already proven itself. Even as a road underdog, a spot that supposedly signals vulnerability, Indiana covered every time, and that pattern of the number lagging the result is the real story entering 2026.
