Florida State sits 19th nationally in accumulated roster talent yet is rebuilding around a rookie group with just 29% returning production, and Mike Norvell's seventh year rides on whether that blue-chip depth can mask the churn faster than Daniels can settle in behind center.
Can Ashton Daniels win with almost no one else back from last year's offense? With just 34.9% of offensive production returning, Daniels inherits a skill group and line built largely from scratch, so his early reads will lean on new faces rather than chemistry carried over from 2025. The likelier outcome is a rocky first half while those pieces gel, since a rebuilt offense around a transfer quarterback rarely clicks by September.
A schedule ranked 25th in difficulty still funnels through three games that will actually define whether Florida State's projected 7-5 holds up: a trip to Miami (17% win), a trip to Alabama (20%), and a road stop at Louisville (43%). Home dates with Clemson (46%) and Florida (46%) are coin flips too, so Mike Norvell's seventh year likely gets decided by how many of those five near-even or long-shot games flip his way rather than by the softer slate around them, which includes should-win spots against NC State (69%), Virginia (60%) and Boston College (72%). Split the road gauntlet even once and the bowl math the projection implies gets a lot more comfortable.

Florida State finished 5-7 and 2-6 in conference play, but the underlying numbers argue Mike Norvell's team was better than that. The Seminoles were outscored in close games and went 0-3 in contests decided by seven points or less, and they ran a -5 turnover margin over 12 games, both the kind of bad-luck markers that rarely repeat. Add a league-play yardage margin that points to a far better record than they actually posted, and 2026 sets up as a bounce-back built on the same roster, not a rebuild.
Florida State's offense was never the problem in 2025, ranking 6th nationally in total yards and 8th in third-down rate, so the real story for 2026 is whether Ashton Daniels can run that machine after transferring in from Auburn. He arrives with a modest 797 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on his résumé, a far cry from the production efficiency this unit already had rolling behind an 11th-ranked rushing attack. The bigger fix has to come on the other side, where a defense allowing 138 rushing yards per game and ranking 120th in run-stuff rate let too many snaps go clean, and a minus-5 turnover margin (103rd nationally) turned winnable games into losses.
Tommy Castellanos is gone after 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns, but Florida State isn't rebuilding its offense so much as handing the keys to Ashton Daniels, the Auburn transfer who takes over an attack that finished 6th nationally in total yards and 8th on third down last year. Daniels' own 2025 numbers at Auburn (797 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT) were modest, which is exactly the bet Mike Norvell is making: that a scheme producing 6.71 yards per play and 219 rushing yards a game needs a steady operator more than a gunslinger. Kevin Sperry and Michael Grant return as experienced depth, but this is Daniels' offense to run, and the passing game (253 yards per game, 40th nationally) is the clearest lever he can pull to turn an explosive rushing attack into a complete one.
Florida State didn't just lose Gavin Sawchuk's 8 touchdowns, it churned through nearly its entire backfield, and the answer came via the transfer portal rather than the returning room. Quintrevion Wisner arrives from Texas as a four-star pedigree pickup to headline a backfield that still features Samuel Singleton Jr. (360 yards, 4 TD) and Ousmane Kromah (408 yards), with Gemari Sands adding 465 yards of proven portal production from Florida Atlantic. That kind of collective churn behind an offensive line that allowed 24 sacks means the run scheme, which ranked 11th nationally in rushing yards per game, has to be the equalizer for whichever combination of backs Mike Norvell trusts most.
Duce Robinson comes back off a 56-catch, 1,074-yard season as the one proven piece in a receiver room that otherwise lost its next two most productive names in Lawayne McCoy and Squirrel White. Micahi Danzy's 571 yards give Florida State a real second option, but the four-man haul of Jasen Lopez, Devin Carter, Brandon Bennett and Jonah Winston has to produce actual snaps fast given how thin the returning depth chart is beyond Robinson and Danzy. That's the swing factor for an offense that already moved the ball at 472 yards per game, ranked 6th nationally, yet finished 40th in passing yards per game, meaning the ceiling here is about the air attack catching up to everything else Mike Norvell's group already does well.
Florida State's actual production at tight end left with Randy Pittman Jr. (23 catches, 208 yards, 2 TD), since Greyson Labiad, Chase Loftin and Landen Thomas combined for barely a handful of catches in 2025. Desirrio Riles arrives from East Carolina having caught 28 passes for 362 yards and 2 touchdowns, instantly the most proven pass-catcher in this room, while four-star Xavier Tiller adds size to a group that was an afterthought in the passing game. With Riles slotted as the clear starter, this position looks built to actually contribute to a passing attack that ranked just 40th nationally a year ago.
Florida State's line put up 219 rushing yards per game and 6.71 yards per play behind a group that no longer exists on paper, with 13 departures wiping out most of the room that produced those numbers. Mike Norvell went to the portal and high school ranks to answer for it, landing Auburn tackle Xavier Chaplin as the headline addition alongside three-star tackles Nikau Hepi, Chimdia Nwaiwu and Donald Akhibi and interior lineman Jakobe Green. The most senior holdovers, André Otto and Steven Moore among them, give this rebuild some junior-class continuity, but with more bodies gone than back, the 72nd-ranked pass protection from a year ago is being reassembled largely from scratch.
Darrell Jackson Jr.'s 44 tackles and James Williams' production walk out the door, leaving Daniel Lyons (26 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Deante McCray (25 tackles, 4.5 TFL) as the only proven returners up front. Florida State went shopping to fill the gap, landing Rylan Kennedy and Jordan Sanders, each with 14 tackles and 3.5 TFL at their previous stops, while four-star signees Earnest Rankins and Jaemin Pinckney add long-term upside without game experience yet. The run defense finished 120th in stuff rate a year ago, so Kennedy and Sanders were brought in to hit the ground running rather than develop on the job.
Florida State ran off nearly its entire linebacker room, and the answer wasn't patchwork but a full transplant: Chris Jones arrives from Southern Miss off a 132-tackle, 9.5-TFL season, and Mikai Gbayor comes over from North Carolina to plug in immediately alongside him. Blake Nichelson is the lone proven holdover, his 43 tackles and 6.5 TFL now the connective tissue between last year's group and a rebuilt unit that also brings in four-star Izayia Williams. With Justin Cryer, Stefon Thompson and Elijah Herring all gone, Jones and Gbayor aren't competing for reps, they're the answer.
Florida State loses the bulk of its tackle production in the secondary at once, with Earl Little Jr. (76 tackles), Jeremiah Wilson (42) and Edwin Joseph (37) all gone, leaving JaBril Rawls (40 tackles, 2 TFL) and K.J. Kirkland (31 tackles, 3 TFL) as the only proven tacklers left on the back end. The staff answered by importing production rather than raw potential, pulling Ma'Khi Jones (34 tackles at Duke) and Nehemiah Chandler (31 tackles at South Alabama) into immediate roles alongside untested four-star signees Chuck Kennon and Tre Bell III. That pass defense finished 28th in yards allowed per game a year ago, so the incoming transfers are being asked to hold that level, not build it from scratch.
Jake Weinberg's 12 of 19 field goals and 82 points walk out the door, and Florida State didn't just backfill the job, it went shopping in the portal, bringing in Gabe Panikowski from Oklahoma State and Conor McAneney from Quincy to compete for placekicks. The bigger swap is at punter, where Daniel Hughes arrives from New Mexico with a 45 yard average on 39 punts, a clear upgrade on departed Mac Chiumento's 44.2 mark, while incumbent Ethan Post and Carter Jula from UNLV round out the competition. With Caleb Bowers and Alex Nocco back to snap, the specialist room is almost entirely rebuilt around Hughes and Panikowski rather than held over from 2025.
Tommy Castellanos and his 2,760 passing yards are gone, and Florida State is turning the offense over to Ashton Daniels, whose 797 yards and 3 touchdowns at Auburn last season were modest by comparison but now make him the clear answer under center. The bigger churn is everywhere else: Gavin Sawchuk's 486 rushing yards and Lawayne McCoy's 403 receiving yards walk out the door too, replaced by Florida Atlantic transfer Gemari Sands (465 yards) and East Carolina tight end Desirrio Riles (28 catches, 362 yards). With 43 players out against 22 in, plus linebacker reinforcements Mikai Gbayor and Chris Jones arriving from North Carolina and Southern Miss, this is less a roster tweak than a near-total transplant after a 5-7 season, and Daniels' command of a retooled offense will decide whether that overhaul was worth it.
Florida State's yardage margin against conference opponents implied a team that should have won far more than its 2-6 mark, and that gap between performance and results is the real story of 2026, not the record. Ashton Daniels steps in at quarterback after a modest 797-yard stint at Auburn, but he inherits Duce Robinson and Micahi Danzy outside plus Quintrevion Wisner in the backfield, and if he simply avoids the three-point close-game losses and turnover margin that sank last year's version of this team, the same on-field performance should finally show up in the win column. Daniels does not need to be spectacular, just competent enough to let the shift from unlucky to normal take hold.
Florida State's number tells a split story that has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with venue: at home, the Seminoles covered 71% of the time and went 4-1 against the spread as favorites, but load them on a bus and they were winless against the number on the road, 0-5. Conference play mirrored the disaster, a 2-6 mark against the spread that erased whatever confidence Doak Campbell built. Until Mike Norvell's group proves it can travel, the smart 2026 play is simple: back Florida State in Tallahassee and fade them everywhere else.
