Alonza Barnett III steps in from James Madison to run a roster that ranks 43rd nationally in talent yet finished 5-7 last year, and Scott Frost's second season in Orlando is really a bet that a nearly rebuilt two-deep, just 32% returning production, can finally turn that pedigree into points after scoring 24.3 a game a year ago.
Can Alonza Barnett III run an offense that returns just 21.6% of its production from a year ago? He replaces Tayven Jackson's 2,151 yards with almost no proven weapons around him, and that scarcity of returning pieces, not his James Madison track record, is what will cap this offense in Scott Frost's second year. Expect growing pains through the Big 12 slate as Barnett and a nearly rebuilt cast learn each other in real games.
UCF's projected 6-6 mark rides on a Big 12 gauntlet that rarely tips in the Knights' favor, with a slate ranked 63rd in difficulty offering no cushion once conference play starts. The season turns on three road-heavy tests: a home date with BYU (30% win), the trip to Houston (32%), and the trip to Pittsburgh (33%), all games UCF projects to lose more often than not under Scott Frost in year two. Split even two of those and the bowl math holds; drop all three and 6-6 becomes wishful, since the rest of the board (TCU, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas, Arizona State, Colorado) is packed with coin-flip games UCF isn't favored to sweep either.

A 2-7 league mark and a 5-7 finish are the plain facts of Scott Frost's first year, and that conference number is the one that matters more than the overall record. The rating of 57th nationally suggests the roster is not far off league average even after that kind of season, which points to close games slipping away rather than a program buried by talent gaps. Frost is only in year two, so 2026 is about whether those close conference results start turning UCF's way rather than continuing to sit at 2-7.
UCF's offense was a strange contradiction in 2025, ranking 11th nationally in explosiveness on successful plays while finishing 117th in third-down conversion and 107th in overall success rate, a big-play unit that couldn't sustain drives. Alonza Barnett III arrives from James Madison as the answer to that inconsistency, bringing 2,806 yards and 23 touchdowns worth of proven rhythm and ball security that the previous group lacked. If Barnett can turn those explosive shots into converted third downs, this offense finally matches its ceiling instead of stranding it.
Scott Frost is scrapping an entire quarterback room and replacing it wholesale with Alonza Barnett III, who threw for 2806 yards, 23 touchdowns and 8 picks at James Madison. That's a clear upgrade in track record over Tayven Jackson's 2151 yards and 10 scores a year ago, but Barnett inherits an offense that ranked 107th in success rate and converted third downs at just 33.9%, a rate that sank UCF to 117th nationally. The explosive-play juice was already there (11th in explosiveness), so if Barnett's efficiency in the pocket travels, UCF has a real chance to turn big plays into a functional scoring offense instead of live-arm bursts.
UCF didn't retool this backfield, it replaced it: Myles Montgomery and Jaden Nixon combined for the bulk of last year's carries and both are gone, and the answer arrived via the portal in Landen Chambers, who ran for 1273 yards and 10 touchdowns at Central Arkansas. Louisville transfer Duke Watson adds a complementary piece off 158 yards and a score, while Agyeman Addae returns mainly as a receiving threat with 7 catches for 70 yards. Chance Nixon and Taevion Swint have no track record yet, which makes Chambers the clear lead back for an offense that ranked 67th in rushing yards per game and needs him to push that number up.
Duane Thomas Jr. is the volume piece to build around after his 53-catch season, but zero touchdowns among the top three returning receivers explains why UCF's offense stalled at a 33.9% third-down rate. Jonathan Bibbs arrives from UL Monroe with the scoring punch this group lacked, having posted 3 touchdowns on 26 catches, while four-star Booker product Tyren Hornes gives Scott Frost a ceiling piece the departed trio of DJ Black, Chris Domercant and Marcus Burke never provided. The explosiveness is already there statistically, the offense ranks 11th nationally in that metric, so if Bibbs and Waden Charles turn Thomas's targets into finished drives, the passing game finally matches its big-play upside.
Dylan Wade is the whole story here, a 43-catch, 523-yard, 5-touchdown producer who quietly outproduced most receiver rooms in this offense and returns as the clear focal point for 2026. UCF loses Kylan Fox's complementary 16 catches but replaces that depth with Oklahoma State transfer Grayson Brousseau, who caught 7 passes for 45 yards last season, plus 3-star Platte County signee Brooks Hall. With Wade anchoring the position and Scott Frost's offense still searching for consistency (33.9% third-down rate, 39.1% success rate), the tight end room looks like the most stable, proven piece on this offense heading into year two.
Scott Frost watched a line that allowed 20 sacks and produced a 39.1% success rate try to find its floor last year, and the whole room turns over again with 12 linemen out the door. Seniors Connor Meadows, Dominick Campbell, Owen Spell and Preston Cushman, plus junior Ethan Higgins, are the most experienced bodies left, but none carries a proven starting track record, and five incoming tackles, including Amahn Williams, Brady Wayburn and Tyler Gibson, arrive as unproven three-star prospects rather than instant answers. This is a full rebuild up front, and until a workable five emerges, UCF's 5.76 yards per play and 158 rushing yards per game look more fragile than a season ago.
UCF's pass rush production walked out the door with Malachi Lawrence (7 sacks, 11 TFL) and Nyjalik Kelly (7.5 TFL), leaving a line that never got much push anyway, at 112th in run-stuff rate, searching for answers up front. The fix is external: Bruno Dall arrives from Akron having posted 3.5 sacks and 8 TFL, and Dean Miller (4 TFL at Kansas) and Thomas Collins (4.5 TFL at Oregon State) add more juice than anyone actually returning, since RJ Jackson Jr. and Isaiah Nixon each managed just 24 tackles with modest sack totals. If Dall's edge production translates against Big 12 tackles, this group finally generates the pressure that a solid pass defense (185 yards allowed, 22nd) was missing up front.
Lewis Carter's 95 tackles anchor this group, but UCF rebuilt around him after losing Cole Kozlowski (81 tackles, 7.5 TFL) and Keli Lawson to departure. Jahleel Culbreath arrives from Old Dominion with 71 tackles and 9.5 TFL, and Tackett Curtis comes in from Wisconsin, giving Scott Frost two proven transfer bodies to plug into a front that ranked just 112th in run-stuff rate. If Culbreath's disruption translates against Big 12 lines, the tackles-for-loss numbers climb fast.
This secondary stays largely intact, and that continuity is the point after a defense that actually limited passing at 185 yards per game (22nd). Demari Henderson (61 tackles, 3 TFL) anchors a group that also brings back Antione Jackson, Jayden Bellamy and Braeden Marshall, so Scott Frost isn't rebuilding a back end that was already a relative strength. The additions are depth pieces rather than saviors, with Missouri transfer Caleb Flagg and Idaho's Matt Irwin arriving at safety, leaving the coverage unit's ceiling tied to whether a front that managed only 25 sacks and ranked 112th in run-stuff rate can finally take pressure off Henderson and company.
UCF is starting over at every specialist spot after Noe Ruelas, who hit 14 of 15 field goals and racked up 74 points, is gone. Neither Mason Denaburg nor Noah McGough has proven placekicking numbers to lean on, so the job may land with Texas transfer Will Stone, who arrives with no college stats but a pedigree from a Power Four program. The clearer upgrade is at punter, where Wisconsin transfer Atticus Bertrams brings a 41.8-yard average on 35 punts, a real jump from a unit that managed just 3 points combined on field goals and PATs from its departed kicking group.
UCF didn't tinker this offseason, it gutted and rebuilt, sending Tayven Jackson, Myles Montgomery and Jaden Nixon out the door and replacing them wholesale through the portal. Alonza Barnett III arrives from James Madison as the established starting quarterback, bringing a 2806-yard, 23-touchdown season that dwarfs anything Jackson put up in Orlando, and Landen Chambers steps in at running back off a 1273-yard, 10-touchdown year at Central Arkansas. With 32 new faces in and a receiving corps overhauled behind Josh Derry, Scott Frost is betting that imported production beats whatever continuity the old 5-7 group had left.
UCF handed the backfield to Landen Chambers, who ran for 1273 yards and 10 touchdowns at Central Arkansas, and his ability to punch through Big 12 fronts will decide whether Alonza Barnett III gets an easier transition under center. With Barnett unproven in this offense and Tayven Jackson's 2151 yards gone, a Chambers who runs like his FCS numbers suggest keeps the passing game out of obvious, predictable spots and turns close games UCF lost a year ago into winnable ones.
UCF was unbackable away from home in Scott Frost's first year, going 0-5 straight up and 1-4 against the spread as road underdogs, while the home slate at least gave bettors something to chew on at 3-4 against the spread and 3-3 when favored. Conference road trips wrecked the number most, with UCF going 2-7 both straight up and against the spread in Big 12 play. Until Frost's group proves it can win or even cover away from campus, the smart money treats every UCF road date as a fade.
