Collin Klein takes over a top-47 talent base with Avery Johnson back at quarterback, and closing the gap between that roster ranking and an offense that scored just 29.4 points per game a year ago is the entire question for year one.
Can Collin Klein's defense function with only 29% of its production back? History says no, not right away, and with that much experience gone at once, Kansas State is almost certainly staring at a unit that regresses before it stabilizes. Avery Johnson and an offense returning 75.6% of its output should carry the early load while a nearly all-new defensive group learns on the job.
Collin Klein's first slate as head coach front-loads comfort with Nicholls, Washington State and Tulane before turning into a toss-up gauntlet that will decide whether 7-5 projections hold. Trips to TCU, Arizona State and Colorado all sit in coin-flip territory, and that stretch, not the Kansas or Oklahoma State home dates, is where this season gets made. A middling schedule rank of 65 means there is no excuse for those road games to slip away if K-State wants to clear its 81% bowl odds with room to spare.

Collin Klein takes over a program that finished 6-6 overall but 5-4 in Big 12 play, a split that points to a team more competitive within the conference than its record suggests. The No. 41 power rating backs that up, giving Klein a roster with real floor to build from rather than a rebuild from scratch. Year one is about installing his stamp on a team that already knows how to compete in league games.
Kansas State's offense was a walking contradiction in 2025: 8th nationally in explosiveness but 92nd in success rate, a unit that hit chunk plays while stalling on the downs in between, evidenced by a 94th-ranked third-down rate. Avery Johnson threw for 2,380 yards and 18 touchdowns against just 6 picks, and with him back as the settled starter, the swing factor for 2026 is whether Collin Klein's staff can turn those explosive flashes into sustained drives rather than boom-or-bust series. The defense offers some cover, ranking 8th nationally in turnover margin at plus-11, which masked plenty of the offense's third-down issues in 2025 and buys Johnson time to iron out the consistency problem.
Avery Johnson threw for 2,380 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, and with Collin Klein taking over the program he inherits an offense that already fits how Johnson wins games, an explosive, run-first attack that ranked 8th nationally in explosiveness and protected him well behind a line that allowed just 13 sacks. The passing numbers still lag, 198 yards per game and 97th nationally, so Klein's staff needs Johnson pushing the ball downfield more often rather than leaning on the ground game and scattered explosive shots. Jacob Knuth and Blake Barnett return as depth pieces with modest rushing totals, but this is Johnson's offense to carry, and a jump in efficiency on third downs, currently 94th nationally, is what separates a good season from a great one.
Joe Jackson's 911 yards and 8 touchdowns are the one holdover constant in a backfield that otherwise got a full transfusion, with Antonio Martin Jr., Dylan Edwards and DeVon Rice all gone. Collin Klein didn't just replace that production, he stacked behind Jackson with Oklahoma State transfer Rodney Fields Jr. (614 yards) and Oregon's Jay Harris, giving Kansas State the kind of rotation that should let Jackson stay fresh rather than carry the load solo. That depth matters behind a line that already kept this rushing attack humming at 172 yards per game and a nation-leading-caliber 1.39 explosiveness mark, and it points to K-State leaning even harder on the ground game if the 97th-ranked passing attack doesn't come along.
Jaron Tibbs (47-595-3) is the only proven target left after Jerand Bradley's departure, and the room's answer to that gap arrives via the portal in Brandon White, who caught 38 balls for 399 yards at Hawai'i and slots in as an immediate outside complement. Josh Manning provides a returning second option, but beyond that trio the depth chart is thin production and untested freshmen like Max Lovett and Julius Wilson, which explains why a passing game that ranked 97th in yards per game needs Collin Klein's staff to manufacture more through the air rather than lean on last year's ground-first identity. If White integrates quickly, this group has more juice than the 2025 numbers suggest.
Garrett Oakley's 38 catches, 389 yards and 6 touchdowns give new coach Collin Klein a proven safety valve while the departures of Will Swanson and Brayden Loftin barely dent the room's production. Will Anciaux and Linkon Cure both return with modest but real catch totals, and 3-star Pratt product Arley Morrell arrives as depth rather than a replacement need. With passing offense stuck at 198 yards per game (97th nationally) but the offense still explosive on successful plays (1.39, 8th nationally), Oakley's chain-moving role becomes even more valuable as Klein builds his passing attack around him.
Kansas State's line allowed just 13 sacks in 2025, a genuinely elite number, but that unit is now scattered across the transfer portal and graduation, with 10 linemen out the door. Collin Klein has to rebuild the room around senior holdovers like George Fitzpatrick, John Pastore and Michael Capria while plugging in three-star imports Keegan Collins, Oliver Miller and Tyler Johnson at tackle. The pass protection numbers set a high bar, but with no depth chart carrying over and this much turnover up front, the run game's 172 yards per game floor is the more realistic target to simply hold in 2026.
Jordan Allen (2.5 sacks, 5 TFL) and Travis Bates (2 sacks) are the only proven names left up front after Chiddi Obiazor, Cody Stufflebean, Tobi Osunsanmi and Uso Seumalo all departed as part of a ten-man exodus along the line. Collin Klein turned to the portal to plug the gap, landing Wendell Gregory from Oklahoma State, who racked up 12 TFL and 4 sacks in 2025, and Elijah Hill, who had 9 sacks at Kennesaw State, to anchor the edge rush immediately. The interior is a bigger question mark, with Holden Bass, Carnell Jackson Jr. and high school signee Carnell Jackson all unproven, leaving a defense that ranked 88th against the run needing its new edges to generate pressure before opponents ever get to test that inexperience inside.
Kansas State loses its top two tacklers at linebacker in Desmond Purnell and Austin Romaine, who combined for real pass-rush juice, and replaces that production with transfers rather than internal promotions. Mekhi Mason arrives from Louisiana Tech with 62 tackles and 14.5 TFL last season, immediately the most disruptive presence in the room, while Jacobi Oliphant Jr. adds pieces from Oklahoma State to pair alongside returning tackler Rex Van Wyhe. This is a group betting that Mason's production translates against Big 12 competition, since the returning options behind him managed modest tackle counts and little else.
Zashon Rich anchors this secondary after posting 57 tackles and 3 TFL, but almost everything around him got overhauled, with 10 defensive backs out the door including VJ Payne's 59 tackles and Qua Moss's 41. Collin Klein leaned on the portal to patch it, bringing in Koy Beasley and his 40 tackles, Ja'Son Prevard's 24, and Kaleb Patterson from Illinois to pair with holdovers Wesley Fair and Logan Bartley. A group that allowed 222 passing yards per game, 73rd nationally, needs the new faces to hit the ground running rather than ease in behind returning production that mostly isn't there anymore.
Luis Rodriguez made 13 of 15 field goals with a 51-yard long and 81 points last season, giving Kansas State a proven leg even as Toledo transfer Robert Hammond III arrives to push him. Simon McClannan returns after averaging 42.5 yards on 48 punts, so the flip side of the specialist competition is that the Wildcats are not starting from scratch at either spot despite Dylan Davidson coming in from Emporia State. The bigger unknown is snapping, where Sam Dolphens, Jaxson Duffield and Andrew Johnson all return without any prior stats on file to lean on.
Collin Klein's first roster overhaul gutted the back seven, sending out Desmond Purnell, VJ Payne, Qua Moss and Gunner Maldonado, and he answered by raiding Oklahoma State's roster twice over for linebacker Mekhi Mason and edge rusher Wendell Gregory to rebuild the pressure package. The backfield gets a similar reset with Rodney Fields Jr. and Jay Harris replacing Dylan Edwards, while Brandon White steps in for the departed Jayce Brown at receiver. None of that turnover touches the one settled piece, Avery Johnson, whose 2380 yards and 18 touchdowns give Klein a proven quarterback to build a nearly new supporting cast around rather than break in a rookie starter.
Jayce Brown's 712 yards walk out the door, and Jaron Tibbs is the one returning receiver with the résumé to absorb that target share, coming off 47 catches and 595 yards. Avery Johnson's return gives Collin Klein's offense stability at quarterback, but Johnson's ceiling depends on Tibbs becoming a legitimate No. 1 rather than a complementary piece alongside Garrett Oakley and Joe Jackson.
Kansas State's split says everything about where the money burned bettors last year: as home favorites the Wildcats covered just once in four tries, while as road underdogs they covered all three, a total inversion of what a program under new coach Collin Klein wants to be known for at home. That home letdown paired with an 0-3 straight-up mark against ranked teams points to a group that folded in its biggest, most-hyped spots and only played loose with nothing expected of it. Until Klein's first season proves otherwise, the smart read is fading Kansas State as a home chalk play and staying open to backing them as road dogs.
